    3. ARTELIA RONEY DUKE Artelia Roney grew up in Haw River, NC, one of the children of John Roney and Mary Trollinger Roney. She was known as "the prettiest woman in Alamance". After his first wife died, Washington Duke met Artelia at a church revival meeting. He married her in 1852 and they moved to his homestead in Orange County. The couple had three children, Mary Elizabeth, born in 1853, Benjamin Newton, born 27 April 1855, and James Buchanan, born 23 Dec 1856. When Sidney, Washington's son by his first marriage, contracted typhoid fever, Artelia brought him to her parents home in Haw River to care for him. In spite of her efforts, Sidney died on 10 Aug 1858. Artelia herself was taken by the fever 10 days later and was laid to rest in the Trollinger cemetery. She was only 28 years old. Mr Duke never married again. Artelia's sisters, Betty and Anne, went to Durham to help Washington Duke raise the children. After the Civil War, Washington Duke founded the tobacco business that became the largest in the world. The family business expanded into electricity and Artelia's sons became millionaires. Years later Ben and "Buck" Duke decided to use some of their family fortune to build memorials to their parents. They arranged to have Trinity College renamed Duke and built the Duke Chapel in honor of their father. For their mother they chose to enclose the entire Trollinger cemetery with the striking granite wall that is among the most unique monuments in the state. 2. Thomas Douglas Hall was born 1 March 1758, Prince Edward County, Virginia. I am not sure when he moved to Orange County. I am not sure if he moved with all of his family either. I am aware of the will of John Hall and his wife Jean Deal???but it is my understanding of other Hall researchers, that this John is not the Father of Thomas Hall. Thomas enter the Rev. War from Orange County and was captured several months after active service. He was held prisoner in South Carolina. It is said that he never got over his anger with the way he was treated as a prisoner. At the end of the war he returned to Orange County where he married Nancy Hayes 16 September 1783. He had the following children: Martha Hall Benjamin F. Hall Obediah Hall William Hall Jermiah Hall Zachariah Hall Edmond Hall Absalom Hall All of the above children were born in Orange County, North Carolina,Zachariah Hall is my direct line. Andrew Corbin Hall Hugh Ferguson Hall Thomas Dougless Hall the above children were born in Knox County Tennessee. It is believed that he came to Tennessee about 1795,96. He settled in the area that became known as Halls Crossroads, which was named after him. Levi Hinds, Bazel Human, Thomas Gilliam, Elliot, Israel,, John Albright, Shoemaker are some of the names that are listed inEast Tennessee Taxpayers"pg. 65 of Captain Bishops Company. I am also interested in the Gilliam Family. I have a Sarah Gilliam who married Michael Frake in 1806, their son William A. Fraker married Susanna Hall daughter of Zachariah Hall about 1830. If there are any of Edward Gilliams children named Sarah born about 1790. she could be mine I do know that the Human family was traveling with the Gilliam family. 2. I tried to look up the definition of MBruce9681@aol.com and the best one that I could find is the one that states that she is the best example that I know of that would define a wonderful genealogist and I am personally proud to call her family. Even if we are not I am going to adopt her. She has asked us who we are researching that could have belonged to the Brick Church and that we could help each other. I am an Albright, Clapp, Cobble, ,Effland, Sharp and last but not least I am a nineth generation Graves and the last one in the branch of the family tree, for I was a girl. With the name of Pat I am sometimes mistaken for Patrick. The main part of my research has been studying the genealogies of the above people in hopes of discovering the true identy of John Graff. I have been collection the Penn. records of all Graffs, and several spelling of the surname. I would love to see the Graves/graffs to start submitting that information to the surname list. Just the records where we got them, dates etc. This would be to avoid getting into the flaming thing.. My line of course moved to Tenn..so I am not to knowledgeable in the North Carolina extended line. HOWEVER.....I have some off beat Orange County folks that to the best of my knowledge in not connected to the Orange County Graves...Until a little bit later.... I am looking for information on the Hall family, Hayes, and maybe the Gilliam lines that are from Orange County. I am going to tell about them in a separate letter because I do not want to be delated because of the other line. I f I can help anyone at any time just let me know. I have been debating for a long time about if I should start putting my reference to the German line of Graffs on the Graff line. Some people can take the flaming and all that stuff but I am afraid that I am the touchy one and if no one is interested, which appears to be the case then why bother. Please let me know what your feeling are. I only intend to put families, with records, not make any judgements as to who I may or may not think they are. 3. History of the TROLLINGER CEMETERY Haw River, NC When Adam Trollinger first settled on the Haw River in 1745, he set aside one acre of land for a family burial ground. The Trollinger cemetery is located at Walnut Grove adjacent to the site of the Haw River United Methodist Church. From the cemetery there is a clear view across the river, east to the Granite Mill that Benjamin Trollinger built in 1844. Many members of the founding family are buried there, including the original settler who died in 1776 at nearly 95 years of age. A memorial stone recounts his accomplishments, and also describes the events in the lives of his immediate descendants, Jacob and Henry. Thomas Husk, the slave Jacob Trollinger sent to serve in General Washington's army with his son Henry, lived to the age of 90. He is buried in an unmarked grave among the Trollinger's. A trust established by John A. Trollinger and Ben and Buck Duke provides for the cemetery's upkeep. Parke Stratford the present overseer, is a Trollinger descendant. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange List archives are at http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/NCORANGE-L/97/

    3. I am responding to Jack Hopkins email to the list because I think this information may be useful to others. I have two suggestions. One, there is an excellent web site maintained by John Fuller which shows hundreds of lists and how to subscribe to them. There are many surnames listed including Hopkins. You can get to it at http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html. Another suggestion is what I often do when there are only a few people researching a particular line. It is what I call an informal mailing list. Every mail software is different but I create a "group" or "list" in the address book with addresses of people concerned. Example I have a CROSSWELL group in my address book. When I get Crosswell information I email it to the "group". Then each member of the group can reply to the entire group. If this is not clear you can email me privately and I will try to help. It has been very successful. 1. Hopkins Family of Orange County
    2. Hey, everybody! I know this internet stuff is new to everyone, well at least for me it is, I would like to correspond with all the genealogist that are searching in the Orange County North Carolina for the family of Hopkins. My name is Jack Hopkins. My interests are the Hopkins families in the area of Orange County North Carolina in the 1750's. I believe that all of the Hopkins in this area are of some kind of kin to each other, especially the ones that came from the Eastern Shores of Maryland. I have been searching the Hopkins family since 1973. In the past few years my work has really started to pay off. Most of my work is on the Hopkins families in North Georgia. I have found my direct line to the 1750's and have met some of my long lost cousins. Some of them don't care about their history and others worship their history. It's just like genealogist, some of them do all the work and others wait until someone else does it for them. I don't mind searching, spending the time, and spending money on my research, but I do not like to waste my time or money. I would like to start a roster of every Hopkins genealogist with a few questions and answers. Also, I would like to correspond by mail with letters, too. I think we should start the roster and move on to form some kind of family club of the Hopkins Families of Orange County North Carolina or what I like a "Hopkins Constellation Club" to help each other with our research and carry on the research as we get older. What do your think ???? I think that all of our forefathers are stars and each group will form a family constellation of Hopkins. Here goes nothing, the questions: (1) The Hopkins member you are researching ? (2) Name of todays county that was part of Orange county North Carolina in 1752 were they lived ? (3) What records do you have to prove they were in Orange county North Carolina ? Be brief. (4) Where can the records be found today, list only a couple ?, (5) What year were they in Orange county or if your uncertain what year ? (6) If know or uncertain where did the family come from before Orange county ? (7) If known or who you think their forefathers were ? (8) What religion do you think your kin was a member of ? (9) What country do you think your kin was from overseas ? (10) Person submitted this information ?, (11) Internet name ? (12) Address for letters ? The questions just ask who, what or where. If it is ok, I will keep the roster of information and if everyone agrees only the persons on the roster can get a copy of the roster information. I used Quattro Pro, but can change the information to a work processor form. I think if we all get together maybe we can help each other and maybe we could develope a book together on the Hopkins families. What do you think ?? Let me know. Maybe I am asking too much, but I think someone needs to start something to help each other. I know some genealogist have done a great deal of research, others just do it here and there, some do it for a while and then stop and pick up later, and some just live the history. I guess I am a little of each but to hear my fellow employees at work , they say I live the history. I think genealogy is a honorable mission that is on going and I wish to preserve the facts of my family, know matter what they did and only the facts, ma'am. 3. >Hi, > It's me again. I know everyone is probably getting tired of me >posting...but I have another question. I know that the Orange County web >page has 1790 to 1850 census records, and I am grateful for that. But does >anyone know if there were census records taken before 1790, and how I could >gain access to them? Thanks! > >Roberta Cooke Schmidt Roberta (and all), The first Federal census was taken in 1790. Prior to that there were "tax lists" and other such lists. The actual census for Orange county for 1790 was lost or destroyed. What we have that is called the 1790 census is actually a reconstruction from tax records. That makes it more likely that someone could have been in the county in 1790 and not be recorded. Prior to 1790 we have to rely on tax lists, deeds, wills, court record, church records etc. Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list See my Ancestors at - http://www.trailerpark.com/tango/lrnoah Gedcoms & other data are at - http://members.tripod.com/~lrnoah Florence Co,SC GenWeb - http://www.rootsweb.com/~scfloren Orange Co, NC GenWeb - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange USGenWeb Orange Co, NC Archives site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/orangnc.htm
