    1. Benjamin TROLLINGER...Haw River
    2. MS LOUISE T OVERTON
    3. For you Trollinger researchers..... Benjamin Trollinger After Haw River Benjamin Trollinger was a man of great spirit and energy. After his property in Haw River had been sold, he moved. Backed by his father, he started a business distilling turpentine, first in Johnston County and later at a larger site in Richmond County, NC. He also was a contractor for the building of the railroad between Wilmington and Charlotte. When the Civil War began, he went to a spot near Wilmington and started two salt works. He was cited for his patriotism in helping to complete the garrison at Fort Caswell at his own expense. His creditors had nearly been paid off when he contracted yellow fever and died in 1862 while staying with his parents in Haw River. He is buried in the Trollinger Cemetery. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange List archives are at http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/NCORANGE-L/97/

I found some Warrens in one of my three "tree" books. This may or may not be helpful. The reference that I have is to a Catherine (Thompson) Warren (ca. 1792 - 1832). Catherine was born in Orange County, and married William Warren, "son of Revolutionary soldier William Warren of Virginia and Gates Co., N. C." about 1810. If this is helpful I don't know the easiest way to send the rest of the information. Most of it in other states where the family moved. There are two pages of lineage connect ed with Catherine and William Warren, and there is a William mentioned in two pages of a will. The easiest way for me to send the complete information, if any of this is pertinent, is to photostat and mail. I do not know the best accepted way. My source is "Thomas Thompson and Ann Finney of Colonial Pennsylvania and North Carolina." I suppose that I will have to contact the authors of my three "tree" books.

    3. Again I don't know like Pat said if this helps anyone. But I remembered there were Gilliam's in Johnson County IL. I found my book on the county and it says they came from VA to TN onto IL (doesn't say if they stopped in NC). The man who did come to Johnson County IL was William H. Gilliam b. 1856 arrived in Johnson County about 1860. 1. Melton Family
    2. Greetings to all on the list: I have information on Terry H.Melton b 1796 probably in the area which became TN. He was in KY by 1817 and spent the rest of his life therre. He was associated with Brock, Templeton, Osborne, Lewis, Messer, Bailey, and others in the east KY. I will be happy to share my information. I am searching for Terry's parents. His father may have been named Preston Melton or Preston may have been a middle name and his name may have been, for example, William Preston Melton. Family traditon says one wife was Ellen Calvin and the other wife was Polly Pollard. I believe Polly's surname may have been Pafford. If anyone has Meltons and would check for me, I will be happy to share my information or do research in exchange for your information. Thank you. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange List archives are at http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/NCORANGE-L/97/

    1. sharing information
    2. Carol A. Johnson
    3. I agree with Larry. If folks want info from the list why not just join? Also, I as well as others on this list have (heaven forbid) made mistakes (typo's) and usually tried to correct them as soon as they were noticed. So, playing "what if", What if the 3rd party, not on the list, received only the first message. I know what I post to this list - and I would be more than a little uncomfortable to think that some message of mine was floating out in cyberspace where I had no control over who received the info/misinfo. and having no way of fixing it. This may seem like I'm beating a dead horse but I did send some information to a party on a list that at the time I had not joined. By chance, some time later, I joined the list and found my information being posted by this party. No problem with that but she had changed the parentage of the ancestor. I believe not intentionally - but nevertheless - she had the ancestor connected to my maternal rather than paternal line. I was lucky to catch it and inform her of her mistake. This bit of "misinformation" is still coming back to haunt me. Seems lots of folks "took it for fact". The worst part, she was good enough to give me credit for the information <g>. My third argument is that I know a bit about the people on this list and I trust them (from reading their messages). Bottom line, I wouldn't like my "stuff" to be sent to "anyone". I am more than will to share, that's why I joined this list. And, if any party wants me to share, and is not on this list, I would suggest that they contact me (last I heard, snail mail is still running) and I would be happy to send them what information I have. 'nuff said, Cheers, Carol ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange USGenWeb Orange Co, NC Archives site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/orangnc.htm

    1. Naming Customs - German
    2. Larry Noah
    3. When researching the German families in Old Orange county it is helpful the understand the naming customs used by the 18th century Germans. Two given names - Generally if a child had two given names the first one would be a "spiritual" name and the second a secular name (the name that they were known by). A girl who was named Anna Barbara would be known as Barbara. A boy who was named John George would be known as George. The use of the secular name rather than the first given name was even followed in legal records. "Senior" and "Junior" did not necessarily mean father and son as it does today. It simply meant older and younger. Naming the children - There were several common patterns to choose a child's name. The one thing all these naming patterns have is common is that the first son was named after the father's father and the second son was named after the mother's father. This was not always followed but it was very common. 2. Maybe this information will help some of you North carolina Gilliams 1830 Cencus Hawkins County Gilliam, John 22001-001001 page 55 Gilliam, Hinchea page55 o1210001-0211001 Joseph, Gilliam page55 00001-10001 1840 Tennessee Cencus Marian County Gilliam, Hinchey page 267 010010001-000000001 Gilliam Isham page 258 010101-201001 Gilliam, Joseph 110001-001001 page 266 Gilliam,Lemeul page 267 100001-10001 Gilliam, Thomas page251 1002010001-11 There is still a John living in Hawkins Gilliam, John page 203 112201-0100001 I have about three note books worth of gilliam notes...I am looking for the parents of Sarah Gilliam born in Virginia in 1980..somewhere..She was married to Frederick Fraker in Knox County,18 April 1808. There son William A. Fraker married Susanna Hall the Granddaughter of Thomas D. Hall of Orange County, NC. I have read all of the Knox county wills etc, in Tennessee and there is no connection to to Sarah except to Spencer Gilliam son of Thomas Gilliam who was killed by the indians in 1793. She does not appear to be his child, nor does she appear to be to Thomas Child. She was living very close to Spencer at the time of his death and her husband bought some of the inventory, but Sarah "Sally" was not listed as his daughter. There is a connection with this family but I cannot find it. I do not know if she came to Tenn. by way of Frederick County Va. with the Frakers, Milburns, Loyds, or if she came to Tennessee by way of Orange county with the Hall, Heins, perhaps any of the Orange folks becouse they all settled in Knox County, later Union County. Hopes this helps me <smile> and someone else...I still need information on those Halls.
