I looked at the dates for Alexander Mebane, Jr. and they were more comtemparies with regards to age. My John Graham was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania in January of 1741; he married Frances Mebane 25 December 1770; Frances died sometime between the birth of her last child, Robert, born 4 July 1780; and the marriage of Mary Bird to John Graham 15 October 1782. It appears John Graham and Alexander Mebane, Jr. married first cousins in Mary Bird and Mary Armstrong. I will have to continue my belief that Frances Mebane was either an unaccounted for daughter of a William Mebane(She named a son William)(Did Alexander have a brother named William?) or an unaccounted for daughter of Alexander Mebane, Sr. There were no sons named Alexander, though in the Graham family. Oh well, we win some and lose some. Someday this will be revealed at the right moment. At least the Birds seem to match up. I do not descend from Frances Mebane, but her successor, Mary Bird, daughter of James Bird and his wife Mary Ashford, who settled in Caswell County, North Carolina. I do not have a document that says the Mary "Mollie" Bird that was James Bird's sister is yours, but I believe it to be true. James Bird was born between 1720 and 1724. James and his wife Mary Ashford were married in November of 1745 at Old Swede's Church, Wilmington, Deleware. James' parents (and I believe Mollie's as well) were Thomas Bird and Sarah Empson. I have not established the parentage of Thomas as yet; he may have entered the country alone; Sarah Empson was the daughter of Cornelius and Mary Sanderson Empson, born at Goole Grange, New Castle County, 20 July 1687. She and Thomas were married ca 1700/10; Thomas died in 1726; Sarah married second Edward Robinson. This makes the whole scenario understandable now, why Alexander Mebane was a witness to the will of James Bird when he died in 1805; and how John Graham met his second wife, Mary Bird. She was a cousin of Frances Mebane Graham. Thomas and Sarah Empson Bird's children were Robert, John, Thomas, Joseph, Frances, Rebecca, Empson, Richard, JAMES, MARY(MOLLIE), Susanna, Elizabeth, and an unnamed child, unborn at the time of Thomas' death. I am also researching the Tinnin/Mebane line. Our Tinnin line comes out of Hugh Tinnin and Ann Williams. Hugh is the son of James Tinnin and Rebekah Thompson. Rebekah being the child of Thomas Thompson and Ann Finney of Orange Co., NC. Hugh's son William Hugh Tinnin married Catherine McCarty, daughter of our Joseph McCarty. Hugh's other son Lawrence W. Tinnin married Louisa Mebane, daughter of an Alexander and Jane Mebane. William's son, also William Hugh Tinnin married Rebecca Mebane Dec. 31, 1861 in Lamar Co., TX. She was the daughter of James Mebane and Rebecca Parhum. Hugh's daughter Susan/Susannah was married to Zachariah Ratliff, the Ratliffs also having ties to Orange Co. This line of Tinnins settled in Montgomery Co., TN by at least the late 1790's. Along with the Moores, McCarty's, Allens, Ratliffs and other famillies (we also find Armstrong connections as well as Morrow), they settled in Washington Co., MS territory (now Washington Co., AL (and counties formed out of it) and Wayne Co., MS) as early as 1810. By the 1830's these families were in Madison Co., MS. By 1841 Lawrence W. Tinnin along with some of the Mebanes were in Lamar Co., TX, followed closely by the Moores and McCarty's. There also was a James Tinnin early on in Lamar Co., TX, but have not been able to make the connection yet. The Moores although we can only find them previously in SC., have a tie to the Vanhooks and Debows in Caswell Co. The Thompson family is also tied to the Vanhooks and Debows. Tidbits of history...... One of the early settlers in southern Alamance County was Simon Dixon of Pennsylvania. Dixon bought land from the Lords Proprietors of North Carolina in 1751 and settled in the area of present day Snow Camp. He built a grist mill there in 1753 and played an important role in the area until his death in 1781. Simon Dixon, born in Pennsylvania in 1728. He was not the first to settle in this area as some came as early as 1740, but he was perhaps the best known of the pioneers. Simon and his wife, Elizabeth Allen Dixon arrived in time to become charter members of Cane Creek Friends Meeting. Simon was active in the Regulator movement in the 1760's, opposing unjust taxation and corruption in government in the colony. That movement ended in the Battle of Alamance, not far from Dixon's home, but there is no record of his having taken part in the battle. During the Revolutionary War, just after the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, the army of British General Cornwallis came to Snow Camp for a brief stay. Cornwallis took over the Dixon home for his headquarters, but Dixon had fled to Hawfields afraid that his role with the Regulators might have caused him problems with the British. The troops tried to operate his mill.... but Dixon had jammed it. He did not return before the troops left, and it has been reported that they tortured him, perhaps leading to his death in April of 1781, just a few weeks after the British were at his home. Simon Dixon and his wife Elizabeth Allen are buried in the Cane Creek Cemetery . A monument shaped like a grist wheel marks their graves. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange USGenWeb Orange Co, NC Archives site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/orangnc.htm
researching the tester surname and need help in finding those who came before. John and Sallie Tester lived in the early 1800'S in or around Johnson City Tn. They had children Wilbur Wiley b. 1864, Andy, Daniel, Tom, David, Sarah, and Nancy. Wilbur married Nancy Emily Dunford in 1888 in Smyth Co. Va.---they had children John Wesley Daniel, Ezra James, Wiley, Andrew, Carrie, Emma, Ida, and Sally. The four sisters lived most of their lives in Marion, Va ----Our Testers invented the "Tester Bed" a sort of canopy bed. It was also told that we came from Wales or England and were Wheelwrights. Not much to go on I'm afraid, but that's all I have.
