Jenett was the daughter of Samuel Coleman and Sarah Lyon(s) Coleman. I need to obtain a copy of Samuel's will which might list Jenett as daughter. I do have a copy of the will of John Allen. 3. Tidbits of History.... Simon Dixon was one of the pioneers in what would one day become Alamance County. He settled in the Snow Camp area from his Pennsylvania home, and began one of the area's first business operations.....a grist mill. The old frame building was constructed in 1753 along the banks of Cane Creek, near the Cane Creek Church. Dixon had a role in the formation of that church also, as he was a leading Quaker in an area settled predominantly by Quakers. The mill is gone now, but it is remembered as a part of the lore of the Snow Camp area. Grist mills like Simon Dixon's were the first business operations in the county. They were necessary as early settlers throughout the county were farmers, and they had to have places to grind their grain. Mills were found in all parts of the county, and many road names are traced back to the mills. Gerringer Mill Road, Dicky Mill Road, Sutphin Mill Road, and others were named because the mills were located on those roads. Sutphin Mill was the name given to a mill which dates back to the same period as Dixon's Mill. It was first known as Lindley's Mill. That mill since has returned to the Lindley family, and in 1981 it was again operating as a grist mill, again known as Lindley's Mill. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange List archives are at http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/NCORANGE-L/97/

    3. To all those posting on these families: I have been enjoying the notes you have posted. I descend from Edmund Herndon, son of Edmund Herndon who married Elizabeth Graham daughter of John Graham and Mary Bird. Most of my information on the Grahams and James Bird is from the book "A Tartan of Many Threads, The Grahams of Union Ridge" by Kara Lee Graham. Would love to hear if you have seen this book and agree with her research. It appears to be well documented and I intend to retrace her steps to see if I come to the same conclusions. I also have correspondence from years ago with Ruth Sheldon Herndon. Do you have any other sources that you would share with me. 1. Re: Browning on the Eno River
    2. Hugh Conway Browning wrote a paper re Some Families Along the Eno (river) which is not too far from the Haw. Said his grandfather, Andrew "Andy" Browning was miller at number of mills along the Eno around the turn of the century. Hugh MAY have included earlier Browning info, i don't know as have just seen references to this paper in various Orange Cty. footnotes. I know that Andy and family lived in the "Piper-Cox" House (has been mistakenly called the Piper-Dickson House for about 25 years-but we're working on changing that as my g g grandfather Wiley Wooten Cox built the newer portion ca 1873). Anyway Hugh says Andy was the miller across the Eno at Cox's mill, which had been previously Alexander Dickson's mill. I suggest that you write to the public library in Hillsborough to ask about this paper. Nat Clark helps in the genealogical section and is a super fellow. Library may still be closed for renovations so be patient. Virginia Brizendine >> Dear Virginia, The book that you referred to "A Tartan of Many Threads-The Grahams of Union Ridge" was published by me and my Aunt Kara Graham in 1991. All of the layout pictures, lineages, and stories were done on my computer here at home. I was able to contribute to the Graham lineage and provide the lineages of the allied families, Boswells, Empsons, Birds, Foxes, Hazells, Hurdle, Jeffreys, Kernodles, Leas, Rices, Roneys, Shutts, Simpsons, Swifts, Tapscotts, Thompsons, Walkers, and Windsors, that were included. Aunt Kara was ninty years old when we finally got the book to its final stage. She was a wonder, deligently researching, corresponding with cousins, both distant and near, prodding, pleading and pressuring to get various ones to contribute to the stories of persons and families in the book. I still have a few copies of the book remaining if anyone is interested in acquiring a copy. She was the guiding force in the inventorying of three significant cemeteries in the area: Cross Roads Presbyterian Church with Mrs. Sophia S. Martin; the Stoney Creek Presbyterian Church with Mrs. Martin; and the Old Union Ridge Congregational Christian Church with Mrs. Martin and my mother, Claudia Graham Fox; all completed by 3 October1974. The original publication is no longer available except in some public libraries, but I have republished and copies are available. I am continuing to research the Graham family; many "new" items of information have come to light since the books publication. I am also delving into many of the other families that were not included in the publication, especially the King family of northern Alamance County. The Tapscott family which was a part of Caswell and Alamance County history is also an ongoing project. For those of you who have not used the old Alamance Gleaner Newspaper as a resource are missing some useful as well as delightful bits of information about the early days of Alamance County and sometimes of the Old Orange County history. These are available through May Memorial Public Library in Burlington, North Carolina. My wife and I have been diligently working to get copies of old Bible records that have bearing on the community, located in the State Archives in Raleigh. Anyone who has a family Bible record and is interested in family research, really has an obligation to make a photocopy of each page that contains family data and also the flypage of the Bible which gives the date of publication of the Bible and publisher to establish the time parameters for it, and to place that copy with a state archives. That makes it a matter of public record and is generally considered irrefutable evidence in establishing family lineages. This can fill the gaps that are present in much of what is available in public documentation. I have even placed a record of my mother's Bible which she took with her into nursing school in 1921 because she had copied the information from my grandfather and grandmother's Bible about her family. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Roberta Cooke Schmidt>> Dear Roberta, I checked all of the three inventories and did not find a single Cook or Cooke in any of the cemetaries. Sorry. But at least you know which cemeteries not to look in now. May I suggest that you check with the VA-NC Piedmont Genealogical Society at P.O.Box 2272, Danville, Virginia 24541. They have many cemetery inventories for southside Virginia and northside North Carolina. They are headquartered and housed in the Danville Public Library; they do have volunteers who will check on specific items for researchers. They do not do complete lineages, but will copy whatever files they already have on a family if you wish. When I looked through the Alamance County Legacy Book, there is some data on a Henry and Rebecca Cook who came to North Carolina from Sussex County, Virginia. That article was written by a Robert N. Cook, Jr. who may still reside in Burlington, North Carolina or vicinity. Hope that this helps some.
