One thing that might give you a chill would be a quick check of medical education: before 1917 (the Flexner Report), there really weren't any, except that most medical students spent time observing a practicing physician. Medicine, which has been attracting many of the best and the brightest in this country since at least 1940, was regarded quite differently before then, especially before World War I. Even today, with all the blood tests, radiologic procedures, and in-office procedures, doctors can still not know what's really wrong with the patient. (I've had personal experience with this: my situation was resolved last year after the thyroid tumor was taken *out* and examined. Mysteries ain't fun to the afflicted.) Back then, there were almost no blood tests, x-rays were questionable, and, if all else failed, there might not be an autopsy -- and, if there was an autopsy, the true cause of death still might not be determined. The annales "school" began in France, which is how it got its name. btw, an excellent source on a lot of 18th century weather across the eastern US is Francis Asbury. His diaries were collected and edited in a two-volume set *that I DON"T own* forty years ago or so: if you don't have regular access to a university library, you may be able to get these by ILL through your local library. 1. Semore YORK (1727-1783) - political activities
    2. Larry Noah
    3. My wife is descended from Semore's father Jeremiah. My daughter provided me with the following that was taken from one of my wife's aunt's handwritten notes. I do not know the aunt's source (she is now deceased) or the validity of the information. **************************************************************************** ***************** Semore appears to be one of those loyal to the British Crown. The king's representatives gave instructions to the royal governor who carried them out through a body known as the Colonial Assembly. Semore was a member of the Assembly, elected in 1768 by the male taxpayers of Orange Co. At times he appeared to "take the middle ground" Although he was a community leader, he assisted some Regulators who ran into trouble with Governor TRYON. In 1771 Semore YORK along with Jeremiah YORK, Preacher Shubel STEARNS, Assemblyman John McGEE and (Others) signed a petition asking for a pardon from Governor TRYON for the regulator activities of John PUGH and Thomas WELBORN. These men were neighbors of Semore. It would appears that while Semore was very strongly aligned with the British throne he respected and had compassion for those with opposing political views. On Jan 10, 1776 Semore (who was 50) was appointed Captain by Governor Josiah MARTIN, the last british Governor of NC. As such he was granted the power for form armed forces faithful to the British throne. He and others were then ordered to lead the Tory forces and take part in the Battle at Widow Moore's Creek near Wilmington, NC. The Tories were overtaken by the Whigs and Semore was one of the hundreds captured. On Oct 12 1776, Semore's wife Sylvanius (ALDRIDGE) signed a petition along with the wives of eight other prisoners to free their husbands from prison. That petition is quoted from the Colonial Records of NC as follows: "That where our husbands Semor York (Others) of Guilford County and profince of North Carolina was made prisoners in and about the tenth day of Feabury last, we your humble petiticioners beg that you would with an eye of pity and compashon take their and our deplorable condintion into your wise consideration and that you will restore them back again to us upon some resonable terms that they can comply with as we hope that it is out of their power to doe and damage to the common cause and where they are not allowed the necesitys of life as prisoners of war nor the liberty the prisoners of war have; therefore we hope that your honours will out of pitty and compashion to us and our familys releas our husbands from their bonds. We made our aplication to the county commitee and their advise was to petticion you honours. Your petticioners ever pray" 12 Oct 1776 Signed Silveney YORK (Others) Beginning in May of 1778 after the end of the Revolutionary War citizens had to sign an allegiance to the new government. Semore refused to take the oath. It is not clear whether he was still in prison, how long he remained or if he relented and took the oath. He was eventually released, retaining his property. It is presumed he received citizenship. **************************************************************************** **************** Larry Noah - larmil-1@worldnet.att.net Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list See my Ancestors at - http://www.trailerpark.com/tango/lrnoah Gedcoms & other data are at - http://members.tripod.com/~lrnoah Florence Co,SC GenWeb - http://www.rootsweb.com/~scfloren Orange Co, NC GenWeb - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange

    2. MS LOUISE T OVERTON
    3. David Fanning was a Loyalist Colonel, with a small army of soldiers recruited from the people of central Carolina. These troops terrorized people far and wide throughout the piedmont of North and South Carolina. During one of their raids in Guilford County, they killed one of the McAdow brothers. Later a group of militiamen from Guilford caught Alexander Shannon, a local recruit, visiting his family in the community. The militiamen proceeded to execute Shannon. (1781) Later they discovered that they might be subject to civil prosecution for murder, three of them applied to the assembly for a pardon for their action. James McAdow, a brother of the victim of Fannings troops, Henry Reed, and William Hall were the applicants. Their application was approved, the final voice vote recorded was 50 for and 7 against. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange GENDEX at http://www.gendex.com/gendex/ has over 1500 databases on line

    2. Larry Noah
    3. I would like to caution everyone to not send to the list anything that is protected by copyright without permission of the authors. Public record are, of course, not copyrighted. Privately written material is (unless it states otherwise). As I understand it (I am not a lawyer), anything published less than 75 years ago could still be covered by copyright. That does not mean that it is. But, I believe anything published over 75 years ago is considered public domain. With genealogy materials you can often get permission from the author to send parts of their work. I have done it before. Keep up the good work! So I think my Cook line was of German descent.>> Robert, I think that you are perhaps very right in your research; the book that Miss Stockard did not list a reference for her data, she apparently conducted her research in an interview form, perhaps questioning family members about the family traditions that had been passed down. It is when we see a family record like this without those refereces used, that we wish that someone would have told them that unsubstantiated statements leave the researcher to go back over the same path again to attempt to prove what has been written. But isn't it interesting that whoever she interviewed had selected an English derivation as opposed to a Germanic one. Continuing the memory aspect of family or local history, I remember one man named Cook who was was nicknamed, "Bushy" because of the very full beard that he wore during the late 40's and 50's when I was growing up in Alamance County. The story was told of him that he had a son to go off to war during World War II, and he had vowed never to shave again until his son returned home. As I remember it, his son never returned from the war, and "Bushy" continued to allow his beard to grow. 3. I have been aware for about three years that some people believe they have found a connection between the Mayflower and Orange County, NC Cooks. In fact, I understand that one descendant of Martin Shofner and Catherine Cook Shofner, my direct line also, has been admitted to the Mayflower Society based on Catherine's supposed descent from the Cooks that were on the Mayflower. I have examined all the data on this subject that I can find and do not see any connection whatsoever. If anyone has any information on this subject feel free to prove me wrong. So far as I can determine, Catherine Cook was of German descent (Koch) and the Shofners were definitely of German descent. A number of Cooks had strong social and real estate connections with the Shofner family. In the 1790 census for Orange County, NC, the Shofners and a number of Cook families were living in close proximity. Another Shofner son, I believe it was Frederick, married Christina Cook. So I think my Cook line was of German descent. There may have been an English Cook line in Orange County in 1790 also. Roberta Cooke Schmidt is, in my opinion, probably going to connect with that line based on posts over the past two or three weeks on this list. If anyone has any information that will help identify the Cooks in the 1790 census for Orange County, please feel free to join in and help get them sorted out. Miss Stockard's printed thesis is also considered to be the first published genealogy of the ALBRIGHT family and is a basis for many later researcher's work. 2. Dear Robert, I was just reading through "The History of Alamance" by Miss S. W. Stockard printed in 1900, which was a work which came out of her MFA Thesis. She mentioned the Cook Family in a very short passage which I thought that you and others might like to know: CHAPTER XII. Cook Family The Cook family came over in the Mayflower. Francis and John Cook , 1620. His son John Cook was in Petersburg, Virginia, 1750, but moved to Alamance, settling on the Great Alamance, Mr. Edwin Holt's old place. Henry Cook settled near the Daniel Holt place, 1750. His son John (or Henry) married Miss McRae of Fayetteville. He was a planter. They had five sons and two daughters. Daniel married Miss Blackwood. Archibald married Mrs. Staley. Henry married Mary Bryan -Henry Monroe Cook, of Swepsonville. Duncan married Emma Stanford. John died. Nancy married Judge Coble of Winston-Salem. Julia married Andy Woods. The Cooks were Whigs in time of the Revolution. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange USGenWeb Orange Co, NC Archives site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/orangnc.htm
