    3. The Hillsborough Recorder Thursday July 2, 1846 Died in this place on Monday night after a long and painful illness which she bore with christian resignation. Mrs Margaret Walls, aged 99 years. Mrs Walls had been a member of the Presbyterian Church for about thirty years, and while gradually wasting away by age and disease, she continued to rely with a steadfast faith on the assurance that when the earthly house of her tabernacle was dissolved, she should have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. She was the oldest inhabitant of the town. Margaret Wall left will in Orange County that was proved August 1846...Listed in Book F page 301 ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange GENDEX at http://www.gendex.com/gendex/ has over 1500 databases on line

    1. epidemic
    2. Louise, I sent the mess. below directly to DFGM43A@prodigy.com and it bounced. CW Thanks, Louise, for the response. I had noticed an unusual amount of typhoid deaths in some of mountain counties, but since my DOHERTYs died after the 1860 census hadn't thought to check there. BTW, my mother/father met in the typhoid ward at Lees-McCrae College in 1933. I guess the epidemic in the pre-census months of 1859-60 could have carried over into spring 1861, but that's generally flu epidemic time. Oh, just idle speculation... Thanks again. 1. epidemic
    2. Hello Louise Overton: I, for one, want to thank you for posting such good info. In your last Poor House posting you mentioned a typhoid epidemic in the 1860-61 period. Could you possibly give me a source for info on this epidemic? I think I may have great-great-grsndparents who could have been victims. My William Anderson DORITY (v.), son of James DOHERTY who got a grant in 1790 on Buck (Water or Quarter) Creek ne of Hillsborough, and his wife, Elmira ALLEN DORITY, died in 1861, Elmira on 26 April and William on 1 May. At the time of the 1860 census they were in the Rogers Store area of Wake Co., but I don't know if they were still there when they died. I have never been able to determine Elmira's parents/origins. I also need to try to confirm that James DOHERTY's brother was Anthony DOHERTY Jr. who married Mary McCOOL and fled to Canada with her family in 1794, and, that James & Anthony Jr were the sons of Anthony Sr. who was exempted from Orange Co taxes in 1784 because of blindness. 2. MS LOUISE T OVERTON
    3. This will be my last posting on the Burwell Female School. If anyone has further questions, please ask by e-mail. I am not researching this Burwell name, but have enjoyed reading the history. I hope in some way, that it has been helpful for some of you out there that are researching these names. My sources for this material came from the Hillsborough Historical Society, Inc. which did the research on this old school. Miss Alice Noble of Chapel Hill, NC owns the original student lists. A xerox copy hangs in the old Burwell School, which has been restored and is open for tours. Rev. and Mrs Burwell left Hillsborough, NC in October of 1857 to organize the Charlotte Female Institute, which later became Queens College in Charlotte, NC. After Mrs Burwell died on 21 June 1871 in Raleigh, NC at the home of a daughter, Mrs W.H. Crow (Nan). the Rev. Burwell with his son, John Bott Burwell took a new position as new principals of Peace Institute in Raleigh, NC (now Peace College). Rev. Burwell retired from teaching in 1875. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Crow, on 5 March 1895. Mr John Bott Burwell continued as the Principle of Peace until about 1890. The Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Regiments were organized at Halifax, North Carolina in the month of July, 1777 and by September of 1777, Colonel Hogun had already established his more than five hundred men at Carlyle, Pennsylvania where they were innoculated for small pox, and had proceeded to within six miles of Fredericksburg, Virginia. His son Jacob, built a grist mill there a few years later and the siste became known as TROLINGER's Ford. The girst mill stood where the Proximity Manufacturing Company (1949) today operates a cotton mill in the town of Haw River. From TROLINGER's Ford a road was built to the county seat in Hillsboro and later extended westward to Greensboro, a road to which many towns in Alamance, Guilford and Orange Counties owe their beginnings. Two miles below the present (1949) village of Saxapahaw and several miles below TROLINGER's ford, there was a second crossing of haw River known as WOOD's Ferry which competed with TROLINGER's crossing as and east-west route. The road by WOOD's led to Spring Friends' Church, LINDLEY's Mill, and Snow Camp toward Salisbury. Both TROLLINGER's and WOOD'S were important crossings during the Revolutionary War and later durning the War Between the States. When the North Carolina Railroad began construction of its line through Alamance County in 1850, General Benjamin TROLINGER of Haw River exerted his influence to route the railroad throught his village. As a result the town of Haw River was born on this site. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange

    3. Near the middle of the last century, various companies in North Carolina began to construct plank roads in an effort to improved transportation. One such road, the Graham and Gulf Plank Road, was laid out from Snow Camp in Alamance County to the village of Gulf in Chatham County, where it intersected another plank road which ran from Salem to Fayetteville. The original plan to extend the plank road from Snow Camp to Graham was apparently never carried out. Construction of teh Gulf and Graham Road began at Snow Camp in 1853, a long and laborious job which took several years to complete. The road bed was first graded by a method similar to that employed in constructing the modern highway. Light timbers were then placed lengthwise of the road bed on each side of the grading, over which thick planks from the nearest sawmill were laid crosswise, two inches in thickness and of vaying width. some of the roads of this period were called "washboard roads" because the rounded and bark-covered side of poles formed a jolting surface over which a wagon could travel. such a method of road construction is in use today (1949) in the sandy section of eastern Carolina. Mile posts marked every mile along the route between Snow Camp and Fayetteville, and toll stations were erected every seven miles. At the first station a teamster reached on the road he purchased a ticket, paying from two and one-half cents to five cents per mile, depending upon how many horses he had hitched to his wagon and whether or not the wagon was loaded. At the nearest station to the end of his journey he surrendered the tickets. The following information appeared on one of these tickets: G & G PLANK ROAD 185_ From To HORSE VEHICLE Vehicles must pass to the right, giving haof the plank where they can; exception, hills, the one going down must give all the plank. Sec'y John STAFFORD was president and H. W. DIXON, vice president of the Gulf and Graham Plank Road Company. Both of these men lived at Snow Camp. Many local citizens owned stock in the road. The old plank road met a very real need of this time by affording a good, solid surface over thich heavy loads of flour, pork, tobacco and other products could be hauled to market. Nevertheless, with the collapse of the South's economy during the War Between the States, the Plank Road could not pay expenses, and it was never repaired. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange USGenWeb Orange Co, NC Archives site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/orangnc.htm
