There was a mention earlier about a book on the above two names that also includes other Orange Co, NC names. The book is "Thomas Thompson and Ann Finney of Colonial Pennsylvania and North Carolina" It is still available from the author, Jane Gray Buchanan, for $35 plus $2 postage, and can be ordered at 114 Berwick Drive, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Ms. Buchanan also says that The Orange County Library has a copy as does the NC State Archives. Ms. Buchanan also think that there is a copy at the Orange County Court House in Hillsborough. I do not have the book or any ties to these names. This is for information for those who may have ties. Altamahaw, a community in western Alamance County, on the Haw River. Ossipee, located south of Altamahaw. These two "mill villages" merged into becoming one community in the 1950's. The quiet little village of Altamahaw, which is today joined with Ossipee, was founded in 1860 by John Q. GANT, a local cotton gin operator. Both of the villages were named for the streams which flow past them, the names of which came from the Sissipahaw or Saxapahaw Indians, who settled there two centuries ago. The first cotton mill at Altamahaw was built shortly after the village was started, and it manufactured the "Alamance cotton plaids" A coffin and furniture factory was built in 1894. Today, it still remains a quiet small "southern" community surrounded by serene and beautiful rural countryside. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange GENDEX at http://www.gendex.com/gendex/ has over 1500 databases on line
Orange County was established in 1752 from Johnston, Bladen, and Granville Counties. When formed, the county was rectangular in shape, and stretched south from the Va border. It encompassed a huge area, approximately 3,500 square miles. Ten counties were formed from Orange County. White settlers had come to this area as early as 1740, but was not until the early 1750's that the population began to quickly grow. Only 20 residences paid taxes in 1748 in the area that was to become Orange County, but four years later in 1752 when Orange County was formed...1113 residences were taxed. That amounts to 1,093 new families in this area from children becoming adults, marrying into other families, plus new settlers arriving. Three communities in former Old Orange County, now present day Durham County. PRATTSBURG Prattsburg, former community in central Durham County approximately two miles east of the original railroad station for Durham. In the 1850's William Pratt refused to give a right-of-way or land for station at Prattsburg. The railroad avoided his property and as a result, Durham was established. BAHAMA, NC Bahama, a small community established in northern Durham County. Settled around 1880 and called Balltown, later renamed after three prominent families in the area, the Ball, Harris, and Mangum's...BA-HA-MA. In the 1800's a post office name here was HUNKADORA. ROUGEMONT, NC community in NW Durham County. Named for Red Mountain. French rouge, "red" and mont, "mountain" ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange

I'm new on this board and what I'm about to say may be old stuff to many of you. My known Hopkins ancestors obtained land in 1761 and 1762 in then Orange County via Granville Grants and later NC State grants on Deep River in the Sandy Creek Community about 6-7 miles NE of the present Asheboro, county seat of the present Randolph Co. A few years ago I saw a small map of Orange County developed in 1774 that showed 16 numbered/named districts districts of the county. Rockingham & Guilford were to west, Chatham to south, and Wake to southeast, Granville to east and the State of Virginia to the north. These districts were superimposed over outlines of the counties as they lie today. This districting was done after Guilford had been stricken off Orange, and therefore did not include the Sandy Creek community where my known ancestors lived. Properties of other Hopkins men, presumed relatives, were intersected in the drawing up of the district boundary lines included in the 1774 map, and these were in what later became Alamance County, just south of Burlington. A sheet gave the names of property holders who were intersected by the District lines for the western half of Orange Co. (Districts 1 through 8), now Alamance and Caswell. I never saw a sheet showing the boundary lines for Districts 12 through 16 in the eastern half of Orange and I wonder if such a sheet exists. The survey of the country section boundaries intersected 3 Hopkins farms with owners named, so I was able to get a general location of these earlier farms of my presumed kinsmen, located near the convergent lines where Districts 1 (St. Asaph), 2 (Chatham), 7 (Orange), and 8 (Tryon) met. Properties intersected by these survey lines in this western half of Orange county in 1774 included those of George Sharp, John Shaddy, John Hope, John Butler (plantation), John Brackin, Zache estated, William Smith, John Brackin (at Stony Creek), Reubin Washman (at Tom's Creek), John Graves, John O.Deneal, John Graves, Abraham Miles, the widow Burton, Archibald Murphy, Frederick Brook, William Meadows, Frederick Brock, Abraham Miles, Tom Graves, John Rice, John Brackin, Moses Carson, William Thomas, James Minnis, John Hopkins, Solomon Hopkins, the widow Brocks, James Wilkins, and David Hopkins. Orange Co. at that time (1774) included the modern counties of Caswell and Alamance to the west and Person, Orange and Durham to the east. The lines intersected some owners' properties more than once. Reference for this map and the list of intersected property holders: Orange Co., NC, Miscellaneous Records (# C.R. 0/3, 928.18) filed at the NC State Archives, Raleigh. Author of the article was Ransom McBride. I'm hoping someone out there might be researching Dixon's of Old Orange Co. I have three Dixson brothers (probable), David, John and Ephraim (b. abt 1767). David married Sylvia Boothe in 1797 in Orange Co., NC., Ephraim Dixson bondsman. John was married to Henrietta Boothe, and Ephraim was married to Sarah Boothe. Sylvia, Henrietta (Ritty), and Sarah were daughters of Daniel and Priscilla Boothe of Orange Co., NC. These families were in Franklin Co., GA by about 1800, and John and David were in Amite Co., MS by 1809. Ephraim followed along with his brother-in-law, Joseph M. Boothe (not the Joseph who married Sarah Barbee) by 1819. All three brothers as well as Joseph M. Boothe died in Amite Co., MS. I have been unable to connect these Dixon brothers to any of the families of the area. Does anyone have a clue. My husband descends from David Dixon and Sylvia Boothe through their daughter Priscilla.
