Letters of Attorney, a wonderful tool in genealogy research, often neglected. Valuable clues found in these tidbits of names that left our state for "the western waters". Sometimes the only proof that we find on those maiden names of our women, when no marriage record can be found. Letters of Attorney most often give her father's name. In the next few days I want to list some of these records on surnames that I see most often on our NC-SC lists. Person County N.C. Record Books File #C.R. 078.928.1 in the N.C. Hello to All: Conrad Shoemaker and his wife Susannah sold their land in Pennsylvania in 1767 and moved to Orange Co. NC. His name appears as a signer of one of the Regulator advertisements a short time later. A map published by the Guilford Co. Genealogical Society that shows landholdings in the late 1700s states that he did not own land in NC. I would like to find out whether he initially bought land in NC and perhaps lost it through the fraudulent deals that were apparently rife under the colonial government then. Any suggestions where to find this information? Thanks for your help, Dave

What a great resource to check before you write to the Archives for records or before making a long trip to check if there are records of that sort there. I know that you have helped me greatly; and I am sure that others were as fortunate as well. One of the things that a list from an adjacent county can demonstrate, is the possibility that your ancestors did not always transact their business in the county that they lived in. Hi: I don't have anything on that family but do know a William Gattis who lives today. He was born and raised in Bynum, NC, which is just south of Chapel Hill. He's now a Methodist preacher and lives in Chapel Hill, works at the UMC in downtown Chapel Hill. Maybe he's a descendant. He's listed in the phone book and I'm positive he wouldn't mind a phone call if you want to contact him. Linda

I recently discovered and joined this group and am amazed at the amount of conversation going on here. I am in Ohio and have made trips to North Carolina - the Hillsborough area and to libraries in Raleigh. I found court records that show that a James COLEMAN lived in Orange County (possibly Person and Caswell) in the late 1700's. Verbally it has been passed down that he and several siblings arrived in this country from Ireland and travelled to the Orange Co., NC area. There James supposedly married a NC born girl, Nancy Ann __?__. The rest of the siblings went on "west" and James and Nancy stayed in Orange Co. In 1799 they had a son, also named James COLEMAN. When he was 5 yrs. old (according to his obituary) they moved west to Knoxville, TN. Unfortunately, I can find no birth or marriage records in NC. I also find no other records of the father, James - not even in TN. His wife possibly was in the Knoxville area. The son, James COLEMAN, shows up in Knoxville records around 1820 as a young adult and lived there his entire life - with no evidence of any brothers or sisters. Any COLEMAN records would be appreciated. I have run across other Coleman's in Orange, Caswell, Person area at same time period - Daniel, John, Spillsby, Richard, Alexander, etc. but have no idea if they are related. (COLEMAN seems to be a very, very common Irish or Scotch-Irish name!) Sorry this is lengthy. Even the tiniest bit of information would be appreciated. Thank You, Linda Coleman lcoleman@infinet.com
I've been on the Orange Co. mailing list for a few months, but lurking until now. I've enjoyed all the informative postings. I'm looking for the Mr. FARMER who married Ann (MECHEM) HOWELL abt Dec 1774, according to William Hinshaw's quaker records for Cane Creek Monthly Meeting. Ann Mechem, b. abt 1730, PA, was married #1 John HOWELL, March 1751, Chester Co., PA. John HOWELL d. in Orange Co., NC, 1774. Children of John and Ann (MECHEM) HOWELL: - John, b. abt 1753, mar. Sarah (GWIN?), d. 1808, Rutherford Co., TN - Thomas, b. abt 1757, mar. (unknown) BARFIELD - Francis, b. 27 Sept 1762, mar. Feb 1780, Susannah STONE, d. 1834, MO I've come across a few Thomas FARMERS, including one (or two) that owned land near the HOWELLS on Haw River (mouth of Back Creek) and on Stony Creek in nw present day Alamance Co., NC. I've also found some FARMERS on Little and Eno River. Could any of these FARMERS have mar. Ann (MECHEM) HOWELL in 1774? Help and thanks!! Will share my FARMER info. Nancy Howell
