Hi Group, I thought I would start posting some of the transcriptions of deeds that was sent to me by my cousin, who got them from the Orange Co. Genealogical Society a few months ago. I am interested in the ones that included Cook (Cooke) family information, but there might be others here who are looking for these families. Orange Co. Deed Book #5 P. 517, 26 November 1794, Cornelius Fogerty & Joshua Smith of Orange to Shadrick Forrest Esq. of same, nineteen pounds fifteen shillings, 79 acres, on Elibees Cr., begin at a pine at John hall's line, N 60 to a pine on Abraham Anderson's line, E5N 150 p. to a white oak on County Line, S15W 120 p. to a black oak on sd. line, W18N 132 p. to beginning; signed: Cornelius Fogerty, Joshua (X) Smith; witness: Danl. Many of the early records of Orange County refer to "St Asaphs" district. I am looking for information on this area and am particularly interested in the following questions: What type of district was this? I thought maybe it was a parish? In what part of old Orange County was St Asaphs located? What records were kept on St Asaphs district? Thanks for your help. Don Talley Black Mountain, NC DTalley@cheta.net

There have been a number of new subscribers lately. The list now totals over 350. The vast majority of these new people just sit back and wait for something to happen. They should be posting a short message about their surnames; ties to Old Orange County; what resources they have available; and other pertinent information. This is a people-helping-people situation. Let's work together to make it the best mailing list on the internet. Some of you may have noticed that you have not heard from me lately. That is because of my job. I own an income tax preparation business and will have very little free time before Apr 15th. I will be monitoring the list and helping anyone who needs help. I just will not be able to contribute much information. My thanks to those people who do make contributions to the list. You are the people who make this list so wonderful. You help countless people, many who do not tell you of your help. Please keep up the good work. Hi NC'ers, Larry you are right some of us sit and wait, because sometimes we post things and no one out there connects,so I guess we should put it out there again,Maybe,Huh? does anyone connect to the ROACH family of Orange Co NC.Hillsbourough area I believe, they were on the census there in 1790, they were in Orange county Tax records as early as 1779, James ROACH was the father of our Jn Green ROACH, James ROACH and Ann THOMPSOM had sons William and Drury, the oldest son Absolum B; abt 1770 and the three daughters,Ann, Ellenor, and Elizabeth, there has been some controversy over this family since the 1980's some say that Ann THOMPSON was not the first wife, that some of the children belong to another wife of James. and that John Green ROACH, his son had more than one wife, which is highly unlikely since neither of them was his widow, when he died in Grainger Co.TN. This family moved to Grainger Co.TN by 1809 tax list,at least Absolum ROACH was there by then. does anyone have any documented proof for James ROACH or John Green Roach having other wives. John green Roach M: Margaret Elizabeth McDaniel she was his widow when he died.I need info on McDaniel also. Thanks, Sharon Roach froach598@juno.com

David FANNING was a Loyalist Colonel, with a small army of soldiers recruited from the people of central Carolina. These troops terrorized people far and wide throughout the piedmont of North and South Carolina. During one of their raids in Guilford County, they killed one of the McADOW brothers. Later a group of militiamen from Guilford caught Alexander SHANNON, a local recruit, visiting his family in the community. The militiamen proceeded to execute SHANNON (1781). Later they discovered that they might be subject to civil prosecution for murder, three of them applied to the assembly for a pardon for their action. James McADOW, a brother of the victim of FANNINGS troops, Henry REED, and William HALL were the applicants. Their application was approved, the final voice vote recorded was 50 for and 7 against. Hello! This message is about EDMISTON, but I also search for: AINGELL, BABIN, BEER, BICKEL, DEERING, GILSTON, KEY, MAY, POTTS, TULLY, & WITHERSPOON. Please help me in searching for parents and siblings of Samuel EDMISTON (b. 1785 in NC or VA, d. 1868 in Harrison County, Missouri) who married Jane GILSTON, 1805 in Orange County, NC. Samuel and Jane were members of Stony Creek Presbyterian Church in what is now Alamance Co., NC from 1821 to 1843, at which time they moved to Missouri. Because of the naming patterns of their sons, I believe Samuel's father could be a John. When they joined the church there was a Sarah Edmiston who joined with them. In the 1821 census there is an older woman living in their home, possibly Sarah Edmiston (mother? sister?). Children of Samuel EDMISTON and Jane GILSTON Edmiston: David Gilston Edmiston, b. 1808 NC, d. 1837 NC Mary Melissa Edmiston, b. abt 1813 NC, d. 1877 MO Sarah A. Edmiston, b. abt 1815 NC, d. ? Margaret Lucinda Edmiston, b. ?, d. bef 1850 MO John Edmiston (middle name unknown), b. ? NC, d. ? Elizabeth Artelia Edmiston, b. abt. 1819 NC, d. 1878 MO James Mortimer Edmiston, b. 1816 NC, d. 1891 MO Henry Piquard Edmiston, b. ? d. bef 1860 MO Parmelia Ann Edmiston, b. ?, d. ? All censuses say my Samuel was born in NC, except the 1860 census when he was living in the home of his son. That census has North Carolina written, then crossed out and Virginia written in full. In the will box of Samuel Edmiston (found in Harrison County, MO) there are estate papers (belongings, no land) for a John E. Edmiston who died 1845. I do not know if this is Samuel's father, or possibly Samuel's son John. Also, in Samuel's will a grandson John Ewing Edmiston is named and I do not know whose child he is. The family names that married Samuel's children are: THOMAS, FINLEY, WALKER, O'BRIEN, McKEE (?), and JENNINGS (JININGS). While living in Orange County, NC, this Edmiston family was closely associated with these families: McCULLOCH, McBROOM, MATKINS, PICKARD (Presby minister), and KELSO. I would be very appreciative of any help, even the tiniest clue, toward solving this. Please write Charla Edmiston Manica, LCMANICA@aol.com
