I had the same question when I began genealogy research last year! It's not stupid at all--a very relevant question in this business! Check out the article at http://www.ancestry.com/home/Myra_Vanderpool_Gormley%5CShaking_Family_Tree06-12-97.htm (all on one line) for a brief bio on Lorenzo. In short, he was an evangelist who preached in the US and Europe around 1800 and initiated 'camp meetings'. (I did a search on a Web search engine and found over 2300 entries of folks with ancestors that have 'Lorenzo Dow' as their given names!) Terri McDonald Hauk motfot@tdl.com

    3. Hello all, I'm trying to locate any information on my Paternal grandmother's family. I don't have much info to go off of. All I know is that my grandmother Zoyah Ray was born Dec. 28, 1909 in Wake county(?) Her father was Lorenza Ray (no known b date) her mother was Josephine Umphrey (no known b date) but given the age that people had children back then I place their births at around 1880 or so. If anyone has any info on these or any other Rays from NC, please contact me. Maurice Thomas

    3. Have been out of town, just digging into my email. I was elated to see Louise Overton's postings for the Person Co estate records, etc....I believe I've discovered some lateral and allied families. I'm relatively new at all this and wonder if someone would enlighten me about how to get copies of these records--I believe the Yarbrough and Moore families belong to "us". Thanks for any advice! 3. Hope this doesn't sound like too stupid of a question, but who in the world was Lorenzo Dow that he had so many people named after him? I have seen the name Lorenzo Dow __________(surname varies) all over the place, including in my Rathbun line, none of whom made it this far south as far as I know. Now here's another one (see below), my curiosity has finally gotten the better of me. Alice Allen ---------- <snip> > > Lorenzo Dow DUNCAN age 5 and 1/2 years, apprentice to George DUNCAN > ><snip>

    3. Guilty as charged. I just found & joined the list on Friday, have been lurking to get a feel of things. My husband's father's paternal lines are all Quaker, mostly from Orange Co. Those lines are Allen, Atkinson, Cox, Dixon, Hadley, Lamb, Pike, Stout, Stuart, Woody, etc. I have a lot of Hinshaw's records for these surnames. Have been enjoying the postings on marriages, etc., I'll be digging up the Orange Co. marriage records I've copied here soon to post. 3. Message text written by INTERNET:NCORANGE-L@rootsweb.com >< Hi Beaver Researcher: You didn't list your name or address! My step-grandmother was a Beaver. She lived in Siler City, Chatham County where many Beavers still live. You might want to look there. Quite a few Beavers live south of Siler City towards the Bennett area of Chatham County. Chatham is right next door to Orange, so there could be some connection there. Good Luck! Linda

Brenda Mason Campos Aurora,Colorado>> Hi Brenda, I have only one Mason that eventually lived in Person County, which is adjacent to Orange County, a John Mason who married Prisilla Wells(Wills) in Granville County, then moved to Person. There are several Masons in Person County at the time that mine arrived there, including another John Mason. One of them was a Charles Mason who acted or was clerk of court for the county at one time. This was in the very early 1800's. You might want to check that counties U. S. GenWeb site to see if anyone has posted any data there. You could also post your own inquirey there, which could result in some success. Good luck, John Fox Winston-Salem, NC

    3. Hi Larry & All: I am one of the lurkers - I subscribe to the list because I am looking for Gibsons and Beltons. Thanks for the prod Larry. Robert Gibson, b NC 1793 m 1810 to Martha Belton, b 1792, may be the daughter of James Belton. Robert enlisted in war of 1812 from Wentsworth, Rockingham, NC in 1814. Their first five children; Absolam, Tillman, James M. Lucinda & Elizabeth were born in NC and the family then moved on to TN, IL and MO. Looking for parents of Robert and Martha or any info pertaining to them. Since there were many Gibsons in NC I thought I might find a connection on this list. I will try and contribute to the list. This is an excellent list and I really appreciate the material contributed from fellow members. -- Betty Jo Gibson Scott New Email: bjsbytes@enid.com My Genealogy Home Page: http://www.harvestcomm.net/personal/bjsbytes/
