    1. [NCORANGE-L] LOST A YARBOROUGH INQUIRY
    2. Karen King Turner
    3. I have funny things happen with my Eudora email sometimes & haven't been able to figure out how my "finger failure" manages to do it. I received an inquiry about a Yarborough connection in relation to my Yarbroughs----but lost it. I don't want to appear rude by simply not responding, so I'm posting this to the list. I was told that our Yarbroughs were connected to the Yarboroughs once some time ago. The story was that two brothers got into a huge argument that resulted in one of them changning the spelling of his name to Yarborough. I was never given the details, so the message went into the pile of "things to get to when I have time for follow up" because it wasn't in the direct line to Clinton DeWitt Yarbrough who married our Turner ancestor. Sorry I couldn't be more forthcoming-- Karen Karen King Turner, researching: BANDT, BLANKINSHIP, FAUSCH, HOPKINS, LIVINGSTON, ORSBURN, PAGELOW, POWELL, RUSSELL, TIGH, TURNER http://www.afn.org/~afn04266/Henderson/Turner/turner.html

    1. [NCORANGE-L] Haygood/Hagood/Hagwood & Partin
    2. Donna Sarchet
    3. Here are the Orange County families I'm researching: James Haygood left a will in Orange Co. dated and proved in 1768. He referred to his wife (but did not name her) and mentioned sons George, Benjamin, James, and William and a daughter Rebecca. The executors were his wife and William Partin. Witnesses were: Philip Gee, George Haygood, and William Partin. Is the above-mentioned William Partin the same man who left the following will? The will was dated 1800 and proved in 1804. William Partin states he is "weak in body" and names wife Jane (or Jean) and sons John, William, Lennard, Charles, Bennet, and Lewis Partin and sons-in-law Jesse Rigsby, Henson Colther, Thomas Connaly, and Waller Herndon. Witnesses to this will were Isham Brewer, Waller Herndon, Holley Rigsby, and Bennett Partin. [Question: I thought if a person was named as a beneficiary in a will, he/she couldn't also be a witness! Any comments?] Donna Sarchet Plainview, Texas

    1. [NCORANGE-L] Maps of Orange Co. and Wake Co..Early Settlers
    2. Marjorie Christiansen
    3. On 3 December, Louise Overton sent a message on the maps of A. B. Markham. I contacted Mrs A. B. Markham and ordered the one of Wake County. I appreciate so much Ms Overton's sharing this information with us, and I think it important enough that I am going to repeat her message and then a part of Mrs. Markham's letter correcting the address a small bit (altho my letter reached her with the original address) Quote: "THIS IS NOT A BOOK but a huge rollup type map mailed in a tube. Mr A.B. >Markham researched Orange County for over 20 years, he then drew up this >map, included an index of surnames, and the years that those folks acquired >the land, he then obtained a copyright on his work in 1972. > Hope this answers your questions! > The A.B. Markham, "Orange County Early Settlers and Land Grant Map". >including index, can be ordered from the widow of Mr Markham. There is a 1972 copyright on the maps, and they can not be bought or copied anywhere, except from Mrs Markham. > Mr Markham also made a "Land Grant and Early Settler Map" for Wake >County, NC. (also includes an index). > A wonderful research aid for those of us who had Orange County or Wake County ancestors!" In Mrs Markham's letter she stated the cost of either map is still $12.50, postage included and says "Our house number is incorrectly shown as 201 when we are at 215 East Markham Ave.Could you possibly send an e-mail to let these people know of the error? So far the post office has been very good about delivering mail with the wrong address." The address is: Mrs. A. B. Markham 215 East Markham Ave. Durham, NC 27701-1343 I am so grateful to Louise Overton for telling us about the maps, as well as all the hours she devotes to giving more information about Orange County. Surely wish there was someone who was as sharing about Wake County data!! When my copy of the Wake County map arrives perhaps I can help some others who are interested in early Wake County. If anyone wants to contact me, my address WILL BE rchris@netutah.com----In the process of changing servers right now. With thanks to all of you who participate in the sharing of data in this list, Marjorie Christiansen rchris@netutah.com

I believe the name of Archibald's father was James, but am not certain, and I would also like to know his mother's name and maiden name. Any ideas where to start?

Thanks to a kind member of this list and a look-up he did for me, I now think that this could be the right place. I am looking for any inf. on the MILES family. There was an Abraham or Abram MILES who owned property about the center of Caswell Co. in 1768. There was also a William MILES and William MILES, Jr. there at that time. Margy <4miles@is.usmo.com>>> Hi Margy, I would check to see if there were wills left by the names that you listed; or estate papers. Sometimes estates were not settled until the youngest child became of age. Which means that if a young unborn baby came after the death of his father, you might have to look at estate papers at least twenty years away from the time of the death. Often the estate papers tell more that the wills as far as the heirs are concerned. I donot know where you are located, but my understanding is that the Church of Later Day Saints research centers all around the country can order microfilms of all of the wills that are in the Archives in Raleigh, North Carolina. These can be viewed in the center closest to where you live. John Fox Winston-Salem, NC

    2. MS LOUISE T OVERTON
    3. ORPHANS IN EARLY GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. The court system had one responsibility that took care of orphan children. When a parent died, the court would "bind out" the children to some responsible citizen of the community, who would feed, clothe, house, and educate them until they reached maturity, and teach them the trade of the benefactor. Then, they would be given the tools of their trade, a suit of clothes, and sometimes, a horse. Taken from the Guilford County court records. 1. [NCORANGE-L] Lorenzo Dow
    2. Donna Sarchet
    3. Lorenzo Dow was a well-known and highly respected Methodist minister of the time. Other Methodist ministers who frequently had babies named after them were Lovick Pierce and Francis Asbury (the first US Methodist bishop). I have an Asbury Martin in my line (SC/AL, early to mid 1800s), and I thought with that first name he wouldn't be hard to trace. Come to find out, every good Methodist family (especially it seemed so in the Martins) named a son Asbury. As for Orange Co. families, I'm researching pre-Revolutionary era Hagoods (Haygoods), Partens, and Stewarts. Donna Sarchet Plainview, TX

    1. [NCORANGE-L] Re: NCORANGE-D Digest V98 #13
    2. Harold Hopkins
    3. Don, in 1774, Orange County was divided into 16 districts. St. Asaph district (probaly related to a church parish) was in the very southwest corner of the Orange Coumty of that time, and now would be in the very southwest corner of the present Alamance County, which was carved off Orange. Some details about formation of districts appeared in the Feb 1977 NC Genealogical Society Journal, Vol III, No. 1, if files are avaible to you. The other 15 districts were St. Martins, Richmond, St. Laurinces, Dunmore, St. David, Glocester, St. Lukes, St. James, Chatham, Oramge, Hillsborough, St. Mary, Tryon, St. Thomas, and St. Marks and were all roughly the same size. I hope I have these spellings right. The districts are squared off on a grid and also were numbered.St. Asaph was No. 1, and appears to occupy about a third of the present Alamance County. The author of the article in the NCGSJ overlaid the old Orange County map area with these districts and also outlined the present counties. Since the lines were laid out by surveyors, they cross the farms and other properties of the occupants of that time and the owners were named. I have the map and part of this list of property holders. I've never seen a complete list of properties that were intersected by the surveyors, but you can tell roughly where certain people lived at the time the districts were formed. Harold Hopkins.
