I'm looking for Robbs in Orange Co. NC. My great-great-grandfather was born in Stewart Co. TN in 1829. Another Robbs, John Lowery, was also born there. I'm not sure they are related, but believe them to be. John's sister, Mary Robbs who married Elias Shufflebarger, was born in NC around 1820. I found an Alexander Robbs and a Wm. Robbs in the 1790 census. I thought this would be a good place to start looking. Is anyone researchng the Robbs name?

Tom ([email protected]) >> Hello Tom and list, There were Nunns in Orange County, NC, especially in the area which became Caswell County in 1774. Record of these Nunns can be found in a book, "Nunns of the South" by Alexander Nunn. One of my colateral ancestors, Marcey Rice was married to Francis Nunn IV 4 May 1774. They moved westward during their life to Williamson, Tennessee, after moving to South Carolina where at least 8 of their children were born. Best regards, John Fox Winston Salem, NC

Hello Everyone, I am also interested in this, specifically for Rev. Davis. Thank you! Bonnie
Is there anyone on the list with the book "Pioneers and Cavaliers" who would be willing to do a look up for me? I understand there is a section of the book which talks about Baptists in NC ca. 1755 - 1761. In particular, the ministry of the Revs. Hart, Washington, Walker, and Davis at Reedy Creek and Tar River. I am most interested in learning the first name of this Rev. Hart. As a lot of you know, I am searching for the family of my gggrandfather, Leonard Sanford Brown. This is all I truly want for Christmas, so I am going to go into detail to see if I can find anyone who knows who his parents are. I do have some new information to post. Leonard was born in 1837 KY and died 1929 IN. He was married to Polly Ann Rippy, dau of John and Elizabeth Robinson Rippy from Sumner Co. Tenn. The Rippy's moved to Clark Co. IN just prior to Polly Ann's birth in 1841. In the 1860 Wood Twp Clark Co. IN census there is: Family 76 Brown Nancy 58 NC Brown James 30 IN Family 77 Brown Henry 25 TN Brown Nancy (RIPPY) 30 TN Brown Abigail A. 5 IN Brown Isaac 1 IN Family 79 Rippy John 60 NC Rippy Elizabeth 50 TN Rippy Eliza 19 IN Rippy Mary Ann 17 IN Rippy Suqure J. 15 IN male Family 80 Brown John 25 KY Brown Maria(Rippy) 23 IN Brown Leonard 21 KY Mahnron (Mahuron?) Leonard m. to Polly Rippy and his brother John married to Maria Rippy, her sister. John Brown m. Maria fought and died in the Civil War. They had two children, twins, Henry and Elizabeth. In 1867 Maria was remarried to David H. Goss of Clark Co. She and David Goss are buried in Washington Co. IN just across the line from Clark Co. IN. Leonard also fought in the Civil War and he and Polly are buried in Walnut Hill, Wood Twp, Clark Co. IN where they raised their family. In the 1880 Wood Twp, Clark Co. IN census, Family 72 Brown Lenord? 42 cooper b. I appreciate anyone who has taken the time to read this and I hope you can help me or keep this for future reference. I am sorry so many of you have received this more than once. I just want to be sure everyone sees it. Thanks, Marcia
Subject: Old Pa. wagon road & Rowan County families As many of you know, many European migrants ported the new world in upper eastern America. Many of these families after several years moved into and through old Rowan County, NC. We have one of the best research rooms at our library in Salisbury. List, For those of you with roots in Chatham Co., too. I've extracted 200 pages of Guardian Accounts for Chatham Co., for the years 1800-1826, so far. They go to 1868. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchatha/guardian.htm Sue
I have been studying the Workman's of Orange County for some time now and have discovered several connections with the Crutchfield's. Was hoping someone who has researched either family might be able to help me out with several questions I have concerning the marriages between these two (all of which took place in Orange County): -March 6, 1810, Jesse WORKMAN married Mary (Polly) CRUTCHFIELD -circa 1813, Jesse WORKMAN married Elizabeth CRUTCHFIELD -November 5, 1835, Elizabeth WORKMAN married John H. CRUTCHFIELD -October 2, 1842, John WORKMAN married Emelia (Milly) SYKES, daughter of Rebecca CRUTCHFIELD According to my notes Mary (Polly), Rebecca and John H. Crutchfield were children of John Crutchfield and Nancy Ann Macpherson. My questions are: 1.. Where exactly did the family of John and Nancy Ann Crutchfield live? 2.. Who were the parents of Elizabeth Workman (m. John H. Crutchfield) and John Workman (m. Emelia Sykes)? 3.. Who were the parents of Elizabeth Crutchfield who married Jesse Workman? Would appreciate any leads on the above. Have lots of Workman material I would be happy to share. Thanks Doug Terrell

Happy Thanksgiving to All, My grandfather's gravestone is engraved with the following: GREEN DEZARN INDIANA CHAUFFEUR 645 AERO SQ WORLD WAR I SEPT 30 1895 JULY 28 1960 My searches on the Internet have thus far not revealed any references to what I'm assuming is the "645th Aero Squadron." Could someone provide information regarding this World War I unit? Thank you to all who may respond. Donald DeZarn

PJ Thank you so much for the info. Unfortunately, it doesn't help with my Josiah TAYLOR. He was born 1805? NC. He was in TN by 1822 where he married a BLAKELY and later a ZACHARY. I know his children and on down from them. That's about it. I suspect John is his father from all the research that I've been doing. Thanks again. Luci

Jim, I can't tell you exactly where Travis Creek was, but I believe I saw it somewhere and it was in the neighborhood of Stinking Quarters Creek and possibly was named for Travis BOWDOIN. Stinking Quarters Creek is mainly in present day Alamance County and probably runs across the end of Guilford and upper Randolph where all three meet. Don't hold me to this, but off the top of my head, this is what I'm remembering. Jocelyn Brabham Barrett
Jim: It is a possibility that your Travis Creek in the deed could be "Traverse" Creek. Since all spelling of the time was phonetic, and Orange Co clerks were notorious for their multiple spellings of the same word, I would almost bet on it. The NC Gazetteer says Traverse Creek rises in eastern Guilford Co and flows n.e. into Haw River in Alamance Co. The area was the Orange/Guilford line area in 1799. You might check other deeds for that area to confirm the spelling. (The name of one of my Orange Co ancestors is spelled 3 different ways in his will). Charlie
Norma, what was the given name of your Thomas's father???? Could it have been Col. Joseph TAYLOR????? pj
I have just received from the North Carolina Division of Archives and History a survey of 85 acres in Orange County in 1799 for Henry Strader Senior. It is very helpful in listing his uncle John and his son Daniel as witnesses. The land adjoins his own and his uncle George's. The 85 acres are bounded on one side by Travis Creek and another by the Guilford County line. Travis Creek must have been renamed since then. Can anyone tell me its new name?
