Thanks, Pauleta Hicks [email protected] >> Hello Pauleta, I am not researching all of the Bowles family, but have encountered one Bowles connection with my Wells(Wills) family of Orange/Caswell County area. A Benjamin Bowles married Elizabeth Wells 30 December 1795 in Person County, NC. As I recall this Bowles family may have had connection to Fluvanna County, Virginia prior to their settling in North Carolina. I imagine that this Benjamin was born ca. 1770. I am not sure if this will aid you much in your research, but I am passing it along for your consideration. Best regards, John Fox Winston Salem, NC

Others went from Wales to NJ to VA to Orange Co NC on the way to Moore Co NC. And the name Roach really rings a bell but I can't quite place it yet. I know there were a number of them in York Co SC. 1. [NCORANGE] WHITEFIELD
    2. Valesca
    3. I received an e-mail from Tom stating: "I am not clear as to your time period as you say John married in 1890 and then they moved to Tennessee in 1820?" Well, guess I was more tired than I thought when I sent this the first time. <g> John Tolar Whitefield was born ca. 1780. He married 1 Oct 1799 Orange Co, NC. to Elizabeth Thomas. I did get the part about moving to Tenn in the 1820's correct though! LOL I have done a little research into the Whitfield's you mention, but never found a connection to Orange Co, and although some did go to Tenn, they did not go to the same area of the state that mine did. There are several Orange Co surnames that appear in this area of Tenn and they intermarried with my line. Many of these same surnames are found in Goochland Co, Va., also. Thanks for all the help, Valesca

    2. In a message dated 4/25/01 5:44:44 PM, [email protected] writes: << At VANCGPS, I also found two books on Long families, one of which held data which supported the early Long histories in The Person County Heritage. Unfortunately, the second book, a thesis titled "Long Families on the Rappahannock River Before 1800" stated that the connection made by the PCH article between Reuben Long's father Benjamin Long (b.1755) of Culpepper County, VA and his "father" Brumfield Long ( and therefore his supposed grandfather, Samuel Long) were incorrect, and that there is no conclusive evidence to support any claim to who Benjamin Long's ancestors really are. I had hoped to find someone with knowledge of the whereabouts of "Red Place" cemetery, and thus of Reuben Long and his ancestors. >> My ancestral half-uncle, Jeremiah Satterfield was married 26 April 1830 to Martha Long, daughter of Reuben and Martha Long; Jeremiah's sister, Barbara Satterfield was married 12 August 1834 to Matthew Long. I have never determined if Matthew was in any wise related to Martha. I would be interested in any information on this, just to satisfy my curiosity. Also, have you encountered an Aaron Long. Aaron married my ancestral aunt, Roan Wrenn. Roan Wrenn was a daughter of Sidney Wrenn and his wife, Catherine Dicey Gregory, of Person County, NC. I have been attempting to determine any further data of Aaron and his family. I would very much like to find descendants of this liason. Best regards, John Fox Winston Salem, NC

    1. [NCORANGE] Re: Longs of Colonial NC
    2. I have gleaned through two different folders of data about the Whitfield family at the VANCPGS (of which I am a member). While I found much data about my Whitfield ancestors (my g-g-grandmother was Francis Justin Whitfield), there was very little useful about the Longs. At VANCGPS, I also found two books on Long families, one of which held data which supported the early Long histories in The Person County Heritage. 1. [NCORANGE] Red Place Cemetery
    2. I found a reference to a cemetery called "Red Place" in a home-made family history book in the Person County Library in Roxboro, NC. It gave several landmarks such as a white fence and a hill and indicated that the cemetery was in the vicinity of Bushy Fork. I went out Bushy Fork and looked around, but could not find any landmarks which fit the description. I have long since misplaced this description and need to go back to the library and re-find that book. It stated that there are only three engraved tombstones in the entire cemetery, along with many plots that are unmarked except for natural stones placed in the ground. Before anyone suggests that I try the Whitfield cemetery #1 (which somewhat matches this description) just north of Bushy Fork, let me state that I have already visited that one and determined that it is not "Red Place". One of the persons believed buried at Red Place is Reuben Long, father of William H. Long, Sr., the oldest person buried in the Long cemetery on Charlie Long Road, 1/2 way between Hurdle Mills and Bushy Fork. I continue to search for "Red Place" cemetery and any colonial era Longs who predate William H. Long, Sr.

    1. [NCORANGE] Whitefield's
    2. Valesca
    3. I have noticed some mention of the Whitfield family lately. I have traced my line back to John WHITEFIELD and Elizabeth THOMAS who married in 1899 in Orange Co., NC. They moved on to Tn in the 1820's and kept the WHITEFIELD spelling of the name. It appears that the WHITfield's and WHITEfield's were the same family, with the one's remaining in NC dropping the 'e' from their name. Is this correct? Has anyone here researching this family run across any info on my John? Here is the addy for my main Whitefield page: http://community-2.webtv.net/valesca/WHITEFIELD/ And here is the addy for my Whitefield index: http://community-2.webtv.net/valesca/widx/ Would appreciate any help, as I have very little time for research anymore (full time job, etc) and there are no large libraries nearby. Thanks in advance, Valesca

    1. [NCORANGE] Re: Longs (EDMISTON & GILSTON)
    2. Hello Alex and Person and Orange lists, Samuel EDMISTON bought (from Andrew M.Culloch, previously owned by William F. Thompson) land in Dec. 1809 on the south side of Tom's Creek. Jon TINEN and J (?) TAYLOR witnessed Samuel Edmiston and Jane GILSTON's marriage in Feb. 1805. I do not know the relationship of either of them to either Edmiston or Gilston. Some of their descendants were later living around Bushy Fork and Hurdle Mills in Person County Samuel and Jane EDMISTON's granddaughter (Elizabeth Artelia Edmiston 1843 -1913) married Legrand Jefferson Whitfield in 1867. Other NC surnames who married into the EDMISTON family were FINLEY, WALKER, THOMAS and O'BRIEN (that marriage happening in Missouri). Could you tell me something about the cemetery called Red Place? My ancestors were Scottish and mostly Presbyterian. Some were Baptists. Any other connections out there?? Thank you very much, Charla Edmiston Manica
