In an issue of The North Carolinian (the predecessor of the Journal of NC Gen Soc), Mr. Johnson (?) published a 1755 tax list of Orange Co., NC. Does anyone know whether this list is archived in rootsweb or GenConnect? Thanks for your assistance. E.W.Wallace
29 June 2001 The Joel Boon who was a Justice of the Peace, is this the same Joel M. BOONE who was born about 1792 in NC and married Martha SINCLAIR 1816 Bath County, KY? (They moved to Jackson, then Shelby Counties, Indiana where there children were born until about 1836) Is this the same Joel who is the son of Jonathan BOONE and Susannah NIXON BOONE? Is this the same Joel BOON who is listed on page 180 of the 1840 census of Orange County, North Carolina? What is his relation to the John Boon, Rev., listed on page 183 of the same census? Does anyone know what area he served as JP? Thanks for any help. John Hughes [email protected] www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/3374

Searching for relatives of or information on Archie COMPTON (CRUMPTON).In the 1870 & 1880 census, he was listed in the Cedar Grove section of Orange County. His wife was listed as: Elizabeth; his children were Jane(?) or some "J" name and Thomas. In 1880, children listed were Jenny (?), Thomas, Band...? (12 year-old boy), Ellie(?) and Samuel. He later had at least 5 more children: Jackson Walter (Dock), George Ephraim(my grandfather), Daniel, Charles T. and Ada. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might know anything about this family. kcm

I recieved copies of my ggg-grandfathers estate papers from the Archives and have a few questions maybe some of you could help me with. In the petition for a years support is a list of things that were granted to my grandmother such as 5 barrels of corn on hand, 11 lbs. of bacon on hand, 2 milk cows for a year, 1 bed and furniture, one wheel and cards and $1910 to make up the defeciency of her allowance not on hand. This is the part that brings me to my first question. Where does the $1910 come from? Does it come from items sold from the estate because I have a list of items that were sold and they did not add up but to $183.30. Also should there not be some kind of papers for the final settlement and distribution of the estate among the heirs? Should there not be papers that the heirs sign stating he has recieved his or her share of the estate and also documents releasing the administrator of further responsibilities? Was all this omitted if there was not a much property owned by the deseased in other words if the family had little to nothing to begin with. How long did the whole process normally take? If real property was owned would deeds have to be recorded if the land passed on to one of the heirs? It just seems to me that the papers are incomplete or that there should be more there than it is. Would not all the estate papers for one person be recorded together? By the way my grandfather died without a will if this would help explain anything. I may be contacted at [email protected] Chris

"Now, if I can just figure out where Piedmont is. And then, figure out where Southside is. Julia" Southside VA is generally considered the portion of Virginia south of the James River and extents west to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Piedmont "region" refers to the areas at which tidal water stops ebbing and flowing. It is often called the "fall line" where rapids begin to appear in the rivers, making western navigation difficult if not impossible. The "piedmont" area extends generally to the foot of the first mountain. I hope this make some sense of the terms. Rob Barton

I am in search of information of Francis Rhodes. I find Francis in the 1820 Orange Co census being a female between the age of 26 & 45 with children, 1 male (0-10), 1 female (0-10), and 1 female (10-16). In the 1830 census I did not find her in Orange Co but did find a Francis Rhodes in Bertie Co, a female between the age of 30 & 40, with children; 1 male (10 -15), 1 male (15-20), and 1 female (10-15). In 1840 census I find Francis back in Orange Co living near other Rhodes's. I would like information as to who this Francis Rhodes is and the names of any of her children. I was also wondering if this Francis was ever married and to whom. I have a Robert Rhoades marrying Francis Copley March 28, 1810 but do not find this Robert Rhoades on the 1810, 1820, or 1830 censuses. Could this Francis Rhodes be the same Francis who married Robert? Does anyone know what happened to this Robert Rhoades? All information will be greatly appreciated. You may contact me directly at [email protected] Thanks, Chris
