Need a little assistance in fixing the location of land sold by John Workman, Sr. to James M. Workman in 1837. This Orange County tract was on the waters of Cain Creek, and some of the boundary descriptions were as follows: "adjoining the land of John Crutchfield and Thomas Cate", "beginning at the mouth of the Spring Branch that runs into the Lick Branch on White Creek (spelling?)" and "Thomas Cate line on a branch of the Hog Branch." Any idea were in present day Orange/Alamance County this might be? Thanks! Doug Terrell
This sounds interesting. I haven't checked it out fully, but it does have promise if you are tired of commercial companies stealing your information and selling it on CD. -Mark JECrain wrote: > Received from another list I'm on: > > Several colleagues and I have finalized a new, > peer-to-peer network for > genealogy. MELVIN ... from a Circleville paper 1898 (Circleville is Pickaway County, Ohio), sorry the photo copy did not have a header Susan Basin was born in Orange Co.. North Carolina, January 22, 1828, and died June 27, 1898, aged 70 years 5 months, and 5 days. The deceased was married to George Melvin, August 27, 1848. This union was blessed with nine children and twenty-one grandchildren. She leaves to mourn their loss an aged husband and six children, namely James, George, Henry and Jennie Melvin and Mrs. Mary Allen of Crandall, Kansas, and John Melvin of Delaware County, Indiana who were called to the deathbed of their loving mother. I am a descendant of Greenberry Leathers. In the census records of Rutherford Tennessee, he states his birthplace was NC and his birthdate as 1796. It was suggested to me a few years ago that his father was Moses Leathers of Orange county but I have never been able to determine that at all. Would anyone be able to give me any suggestions for finding him in Orange county between 1796 and approx 1825? Thank you so much. Bonnie

The counties are too numerous for me to print out all the codes. What counties are you interested in? I could provide a brief key for a few counties. Do you have any general books on North Carolina--such as Thornton Mitchell's Index of Testators (or similar title) of North Carolina? If so, the introduction gives a good run down of all the codes and a brief description of the county and its probate holdings. Same with the marriage bonds which are on microfiche at many LDS family history centers. E.W.Wallace southern California
Hi Mark, Unfortunately, Sonya won't get your response as she is probably not a member of this mail list. To respond to Sonya you need to go to the message boards. This message came through the gateway from the former GenConnect Boards. When MyFamily.com merged the RootsWeb and Ancestry.com message boards the default was set as an open gateway. That means that anytime a message is sent to the message board it is automatically forwarded to the mail list of the same name.
