    1. What really happened to the 1890 census?

    3. I thought that this was information that could be useful to *all* of us. Thanks, Sandy, for sending it! Angie >-----Original Message----- >From: Sandy [mailto:teylu@earthlink.net] >Sent: Saturday, September 18, 2004 3:57 PM >To: NCGENWEB-DISCUSS-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [NCGENWEB-DISCUSS] What REALLY happened to the 1890 census > > >I hope that Angie will forward this on to the NCGenWeb list/ For those >who thought (as I did) that the bulk of the entire 1890 Federal Census >was lost "in a fire" in Washington, think again. ;-) > >An article on the National Archives & Records Administration website >entitled: >"First in the Path of Firemen" >The Fate of the 1890 Population Census >by Kellee Blake > >should really be "required reading" for all citizens, especially those >concerned with historical research. > >Part 1 of this important article begins on the following link. >A link at >the bottom will lead you to Part 2, then on to Part 3. > >http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/spring_1996_1890_ census_1.html Allow me to pique your interest with this excerpt: "The extant record is scanty on storage and possible use of the 1890 schedules between 1922 and 1932 and seemingly silent on what precipitated the following chain of events. In December 1932, in accordance with federal records procedures at the time, the Chief Clerk of the Bureau of Census sent the Librarian of Congress a list of papers no longer necessary for current business and scheduled for destruction. He asked the Librarian to report back to him any documents that should be retained for their historical interest. Item 22 on the list for Bureau of the Census read 'Schedules, Population . . . 1890, Original.' The Librarian identified no records as permanent, the list was sent forward, and Congress authorized destruction on February 21, 1933. At least one report states the 1890 census papers were finally destroyed in 1935, and a small scribbled note found in a Census Bureau file states 'remaining schedules destroyed by Department of Commerce in 1934 (not approved by the Geographer).' " By all means, read the entire article, and pass along the link to everyone. Frankly, I think it's time we stopped perpetuating the myth that it was merely "lost in a fire"... After all, history does have a way of repeating itself. -Sandy CC for Vance County

    3. Hi Everyone, Claudia has finished photographing the Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery and I've posted about 50 of the pictures this evening to get that new section started ~ thought that you may enjoy checking it out since the List groups are so quiet right now, and perhaps find an interment of interest to you and your research. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbertie/cemeteries.html Please send whatever information you can to me to post and build up the individual County research data bases whenever you have a chance. 3. The posting of Molly's book about Mary Person of Halifax & Bertie has been improved upon and I am hoping will be much easier for those of you using NetScape to read & more enjoyable for everyone all the way around. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbertie/woodville/mollysfile/molly.html Also, I wanted to ask again to see if anyone has turned up a picture of Mary Person that we could post with her tribute file ~ Perhaps someone knows one of her family who would share a picture? Ray Fouts, through no small effort, has brought back another out of print and wonderful northeastern NC research book that should hold charms for many of us with its records beginning way back in 1701 when that entire area of NC was still a precinct of Albemarle: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5516647608 Al has helped tweak up the file regarding the Outland-Joyner cemetery in Northampton that you may want to see: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncnortha/cemetery/cemetery.htm Claudia has posted some excellent files in the Bertie Cemeteries this week just in case you haven't checked them: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbertie/cemeteries.html Please share your files with the county sites whenever you have a chance to help build up the information available ~ many thanks! 1. Robert Britton
    2. Janet Thomas
    3. Rachel, I don't have any Robert Brittons, but keep in mind that my information re: Brittons in Northampton County is far from inclusive. There are also quite a few Brittons in Hertford County NC (which borders Nothampton) and I would imagine in Southampton County VA (which also borders Northampton County). Many families moved back and forth between Northampton NC and Southampton VA. Hope this helps some. Jan

    1. Britton
    2. Janet Thomas
    3. Marilyn, Thanks for the info on William Britton and William Turner. I wasn't aware of the info regarding William Britton and Civil War Service. My guess would be that his injury could have been at the Seige of Petersburg since he was treated in Richmond. Will definitely pursue this lead As for Laura Turner, I have absolutely nothing on her ancestry except for a possible match in Northampton County NC census records. William H Turner is a definite lead since his age is in the correct timespan. But, there are so many Turners in Northampton County! Rachel, The info I have on the Brittons residing in Northampton County NC goes back to Jesse Britton, b. about 1751 in Virginia and died about 1841 in Northampton County NC. He was married to Susanna (Maiden name unknown). Their son was Eli Britton who married Mary Fly in Northampton County NC March 5, 1822. William Britton was one of their 8 children. William was my other half's great-grandfather. Hope this info helps. Jan

    3. Why not order that other William's will or ask around for an abstract of it Gloria? It may offer something of interest to you even though you are sure it isn't your William's because that William might be family and say something useful to your quest? 3. Thanks Jan for your kind words and for these links! I hope something interesting will turn up regarding your Turner and Britton very soon. I was wondering if you already have your Wm E. Britton's civil war records from the National Archives? I was thinking that perhaps his records will contain some needed family information that you could put to good use, and it does seem that he had quite a time of it during the war ...he probably has medical records that you can order too since he was wounded and listed as having been in a hospital. Also, his wife's [brother - uncle - cousin?] who was in the war and died might have some good info tucked in with his records for you? I am working on the Northampton Soldiers list regarding the Civil War but since there are at least 883 men from Northampton who served in the Confederate Army it is a time eating monster getting ready to post them to the site ~ however am plugging away at it. I hope that this info will be of use to you. I have NARA's direct link as well as others that I think are helpful in the "Great Links" section of www.b4us.net if you want to bookmark that page. For anyone who is not aware NARA will send you any forms that you request from them online, fax or phone very quickly and free as a perk for being a citizen. :o)~ Marianne PS Here is a bit of info about Britton and Turner just in case it might be a help to you: William E. 1. Charles Thom(p)son
    2. Sorry! That one got away from me! Looking for any information on Charles Thom(p)son who left a will in Northampton County 23 November 1787. (I have a copy of the original.) Other wills and land records prove that his wife was Joanna Washington, daughter of James Washington, also of Northampton. He names all his children: Ethelred, Washington, Clarissa Nicholas/Nicholson, Hudson, and Pamela. Revolutionary records indicate that there was another son, Charles Jr. Pamela married Hardy Murphree, time, place not known. The Washington line goes back to a John Washington of Surry County, Virginia, as does Nicholson and other connections. Washington Thomson and possibly others of the family migrated to Caldwell County, Kentucky. Washington then moved on to Marengo and Greene Counties, Alabama, where he was a delegate to the conference in Huntsville in 1819 the purpose of which was to form a constitution in order to apply for statehood. Washington Thomson left a will in Greene County naming all his children and his wife, Jerusha (maiden name not known). I will be most happy to share any information that I have on his family as well as connected families in Northampton and Surry. I have been brief here, desiring only to ascertain any interest in these families, and to offer an exchange of information. Specific dates will be provided. Thanks much! Bena Taylor Kirkscey

Hope those links were the ticket? Here is some interesting information that Cathy Farris shared today ~ may come in handy to know about: ------------------------------------------------------------------- This may be of interest to researchers. Cathy Farris This email announces that a new LDS FamilySearch Center is now operating in the John Parker Library of the recently opened National Underground Railroad Freedom Center (NURFC) in Cincinnati, Ohio. You and your friends are invited to visit us and use our FamilySearch Center. Adult fee to the NURFC is $12; however, if you visit only the FamilySearch Center there is no charge. The FamilySearch Center consists of five computers with high speed Internet access. In addition to ancestry.com, we are using heritagequestonline.com for access to census records. Various LDS collections are also available including Pedigree Resource, Vital Records, and Freedman's Bank Records. Temple Ready is not in use at this FamilySearch Center. "Starter" kits are available for beginners. The Center also includes a Canon digital micrographics system. Microfilms may be ordered for the standard fee for people wishing to use them in this FamilySearch Center. The FamilySearch Center is sponsored and staffed by the three Cincinnati stakes. The NURFC is excited to have the partnership of the Church in creating and operating this FamilySearch Center. See page 10 of the August issue of Family Tree magazine. Since there is limited space at the FamilySearch Center, reservations are recommended and can be made by calling (513) 333-7737. If you come to the NURFC without a FamilySearch reservation, you may inquire at the Information Desk to learn if there is available FamilySearch space. (A reservation is unnecessary solely to visit the NURFC.) The FamilySearch Center is open 11 AM to 4 PM, Tuesday through Friday; and 11 AM to 2:30 PM on Saturday. Please learn more about the NURFC at www.freedomcenter.org Questions or suggestions may be directed to familysearchnurfc@yahoo.com Jim Ison Director, FamilySearch Center John Parker Library The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center =--------------------------------------------------------------= Regards, Marianne -----Original Message----- From: Gloria [mailto:gloriainia@unitedwestern.net] Sent: Tuesday, August 31, 2004 11:55 PM To: NCNORTHA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Northampton] Woops on those links!
