    1. Footprints In Northampton
    2. RLDOZIER has referred me to a Web page that will permit you to view Footprints in Northampton in digital format. Footprints in Northampton, a bicentennial publication, has been out of print for some time and used copies have become prohibitively expensive. You can access a digital copy of it and several other Northampton County publications by doing a Google search for "North Carolina History and Fictional Digital Library". Click the reference and then "Northampton" and then "Footprints in Northampton". If you have ties to adjoining counties, you may want to see what is available in them. For Bertie County a 1905 publication of "Plantation Sketches" by Margaret Devereaux can be viewed. This is a very interesting historical publication of antebellum life on a Roanoke River Plantation through the eyes of a wife of a very wealthy land owner, John T. Devereaux. Ed Barnes

    2. Bobby Rawls
    3. Hello all, I have recently received some 140 deeds from these counties on the RAWLS families with some 180 or so more on the way covering the mid 1700's to the late 1800's. there are many people listed in these deeds and most are related, many family relationships are proved out in these records. they concern many families including these CONNER, PHELPS, MOORE, COSTELLOS, MORRIS, ODOM, BAKER, Among others anyone interested in these deed abstracts please contact me, please share your findings and together we can solve many of the mysteries of these family ties. they say at least 70% of the names listed in deeds or wills are related, I have found this to be very true. When selling their land they normally sold it to family members. more later BOBBY RAWLS BIG SPRING, TEXAS

    1. Odom and Wheelers in Northampton Co.
    2. O. W. Odom
    3. Hello, I am new to this list and hope someone here can help unravel the following mystery. I think my Odoms were in the Chowan/Bertie/Northampton, NC area from the late 1600's through much of the 1700's. My Odom line (unproven) may run from Richard (who left a will in Chowan Co. in 1727) through 2 Aarons to John, b 1748 in NC, d 1803 in Marlboro Co. SC. I'm pretty sure about John of Marlboro and the line down from him, which runs through 2 more Johns (who were in Muscogee Co., GA in 1850), then Hiram, who moved to Claiborne Parish, LA around 1861, where a lot of my Odoms still live. I recently had the y-chromosome DNA analysis done by the company Relative Genetics as a participant in the Odom surname DNA project. Out of about 60 participants, I only matched 4 others. 3 of these are known to be descendants of the above John Odom, who died in Marlboro Co., SC in 1803. The 4th traces his lineage back to Moses Odom, b abt 1729, who lived near Kirby's Creek in Northampton Co. I don't think I am a direct descendant of Moses, but the DNA match must indicate that he was closely related to my line. To compare my DNA results with others who have had the test done, I went to the Sorenson Molecular Genetics Website (<www.smgf.org>), where they maintain a database of all the y-chromosome results they have obtained in their extensive worldwide testing project. My DNA showed a 32/33 match with one additional Odom and, to my surprise, a 35/36 match with a Wheeler. They don't give first names of living persons, but they do give pedigrees, from which I found that the Wheeler individual I matched is the great-grandson of John Berl Wheeler of Coosa Co., AL. I then found online that John Berl Wheeler was the son of Benjamin Franklin Wheeler, b 1842 in Chambers Co., AL, who was the son of Robert Boling Wheeler, b 1805 in NC (no county given). I have done some online research on NC Wheelers and find that there were quite a few of them in the Northampton Co. area at the same time my Odoms were there. Most of these Wheelers seem to have been descendants of the immigrant Henry Wheeler of VA. Some of these Wheelers seem to have married into the Boon and Vann families, as some of my Odoms did (I think), but I haven't heard of a direct Wheeler-Odom connection. I am hoping someone on the list might have some info on such a connection. With such a close DNA match, it seems there must be some relationship, but it could have been before they came to America. I look forward to hearing from anyone who can shed some light on this mysterious Wheeler/Odom DNA match. Best regards, O. W. Odom Austin, Texas

    1. DUKE, DOUGHERTY, AND MANY OTHER SURNAMES!!
    2. thehornguy
    3. Hello, all Isle of Wight searchers, DUKE family students, and other Virginia 'experts'! And thanks to all for reading this, and considering the possibilities!! This is another post about some folks who may (or may not) be a part of my family tree. One astute student says this is likely to be the 'lost' family group to which my oldest known relative in the DUKE line may belong. I hope that the info we find, with your help, will be of assistance to me in the proof of this idea. The family names mentioned are as follows: DUKE, SHERRARD, VINSON, DAUGHTRY, BODDIE, PEATE, PEALE, RUFFIN, BRIDGERS, CARTER, LASSITER, HAYES, CAMPBELL, HOWELL, GATLING, FUTRELL, and BRYAN. First, the will of William BRIDGERS was probated on April 23, 1763, in an office (or by an officer) of an office in the Isle of Wight county area. Heirs (a paraphrased version, here) were; including beloved wife Rachel (missing surname) BRIDGERS, sons William BRIDGERS, John BRIDGERS and Willis BRIDGERS, and daughter Elizabeth BRIDGERS. Executors are wife, Rachel BRIDGERS, William RUFFIN, John DUKE and Richard PEATE. Witnesses were Willis BODDIE, Morris PEALE and Sarah (no maiden surname) RUFFIN. That was the first of four wills to be probated. The next was that of Thomas VINSON, which was probated in February, 1764, in the same vicinity. Heirs are sons, John VINSON, Thomas VINSON (Jr.?), William VINSON, Jesse VINSON, James VINSON, David VINSON and daughters, Charity (VINSON) CARTER, Susanna (VINSON) MORGAN, Sarah (VINSON) FULLER and Isabel (VINSON) DUKE, and beloved wife, Isobel (missing surname) VINSON. Executors were David VINSON and James VINSON. Witnesses were James LASSITER, Thomas HAYES and Robert DUKE. A third will was probated in the February court in 1767, for the estate of Robert DUKE. Heirs were beloved wife Isabel (VINSON) DUKE and sons, Robert DUKE, William DUKE, Samuel DUKE, Benjamin DUKE, Joseph DUKE, John DUKE and James DUKE, and daughters Rachel DUKE and (name obliterated) DUKE, Elizabeth (DUKE) FULTON, (name obliterated) DUKE and Mille DUKE. Executors were wife Isabel DUKE and son Robert DUKE. Witnesses were Thomas RESPESS and Sigmond SUMMERSIL. The fourth and last will in this message was probated in June 1784, also in the Isle of Wight area. The deceased was Joshua DAUGHTRY, and the heirs were wife Elizabeth (no surname) DAUGHTRY, and daughters Lucretia (DAUGHTRY) CAMPBELL (wife of William CAMPBELL), (no name given) DAUGHTRY HOWELL (wife of Stephen HOWELL), Mary (DAUGHTRY) FUTRELL (wife of John FUTRELL), and sons Elijah DAUGHTRY and Elisha DAUGHTRY, and grand-daughters Elizabeth GATLING and Anne GATLING. Executors were wife Elizabeth (??) DAUGHTRY and James VINSON. Witnesses were James VINSON, Henry VINSON, William BRYAN and Clarky BRYAN. Finally, now, to the questions which I wish to pose!! Robert DUKE, the deceased in the third will, had a son named Robert. The final location where this son lived out his life is the infomation I seek. I am told that he made no records of land transactions or other property acquisitions in either VA or NC. Can anyone with a 'bent' for working puzzles come up with any records which tie any man named Robert DUKE to this line of the family, after the settlement of the deceased Robert's will?? As a challenge, this is more than my meager expertise can deal with!! But there are probably some out there who can see this as a good and satisfactory and exciting puzzle to solve!! Here are some leading (or mis-leading) clues for you to study. In SC, in ca. 1750-'80, in the Camden/Fairfield/Kershaw area, there was a Robert DUKE, whose wife was Nancy (UNKNOWN). They had a son Thomas, and others. The wife of Thomas was Mary DOUGHERTY, possibly a member of that DAUGHTRY (?) family?? There is little else that might be a match, but you can see this Thomas and his family at http://home.att.net/~ztlcox/ , and go to the DUKE Family pages, there. Thomas's father, Robert DUKE, in my oldest known ancestor, and I seek to learn the name of his father if at all possible. Nothing in the records of SC reveals the name I seek, so far as I have learned. If the man who was an executor in 1767 in the earlier Robert DUKE's will is the same man as 'my' Robert in SC, I am unable to verify that point, and need someone with great 'savvy' to help!! Any takers?? Thanks in advance!! Joe DUKE --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    3. Thanks for replying KEN Their were at least 2 RAWLS-ODOM marriages in that area. JAMES RAWLS married ELIZABETH ODOM in the 1770-80's as proved in the will of WILLIAM ODOM when he named his daughter ELIZABETH RAWLS in his will in the 1790's and their daughter married WILLIAM BOOTHE as proved when JAMES RAWLS was put in charge of the children of WILLIAM BOOTHE, JAMES and ELIZABETH BOOTHE. 3. hello all, I am looking for information on the RAWLS families of EARLY, BERTIE, HERTFORD, NORTHAMPTON counties, NORTH CAROLINA and NANSEMOND county, VIRGINIA. It appears that John RALLS first patented land in 1695 and no doubt the father of WILLIAM RALLS of the 1714 and later patents of NANSEMOND county, VIRGINIA. And probably the JOHN RALLS {RAWLS}, JR. of Early NANSEMOND county and GATES county, NC. John RAWLS and HENRY RAWLS,SR and ABSALOM RAWLS and WILLIAM RAWLS seem to be brothers. ABSALOM seems to have been the father of SILAS and MORIAH RAWLS, These from the mid to late 1700's. William and REBECCA were the parents of LEVI, JONAS, JOSIAH, HOSEA, JOB, DRUCILLA Henry RAWLS, JR and CHARITY. were the parents of HENRY, JONAS, JAMES, PHILIP, EDEY, MARY, ALICE PHILIP RAWLS died with no children and left his property to his brother HENRY and nephews and nieces including JONAS RAWLS, JR. (son of HENRY). This JONAS should be the one that married SALLY MOORE. Any info. is truly appreciated. BOBBY RAWLS BIG SPRING, TEXAS

    3. Paul Drake shared this information with us today: One of these days, you might want to mention to your readers that in one jurisdiction or another the terms Clerk, Register, Registrar, Recorder, Prothonotary, and County Records Keeper all serve to describe those officers of a County or other political subdivision who have the responsibility of maintaining and providing registries for any writings that have to do with government or the functioning of such political bodies.    Those officers have the charge of all materials such as deeds and land instruments, mortgages, liens, courts' orders concerning land and government, and any and all other documents affecting the people or the government of that county, town, or precinct.  To suggest that any one of those terms is precise, describes a specific group of duties, or reveals the State or Colony in which those officers act is simply an overstatement.    So, in VA we have Clerks, In PA there are Prothonotaries, in Ohio the Registrars reign supreme, and in Tennessee we have Registers of deeds, all doing the same job.  Paul   http://www.b4us.net/pauldrake.html =========================== Would everyone please check your reference to see if you can help Delores with this question about her Andrew Wade and Nancy Robins (Robbins)~ please?
