My 7th grandfather Stephen Ragland died in Northampton County in 1747. I have in the Ragland Genealogy that he operated a ferry on the Roanoke River before his death. I have been told his land was near present day US HWY 158. The ferry crossing is the "key" to locating Stephen's plantation. He was in Bertie Precinct by 1730 and I know Northampton was formed from it in 1741. I also found a record by googling where Edward Heathcock on 2 Apr 1757 sold 100 acres to Drury Jordan on the north side of RAGLAND's FERRY ROAD adjacent to Arthur's Creek. Does any one know by this description where exactly Stephen's ferry he operated is in present day Northampton County ? Marianne Dillow

Thank you for your suggestions Ken.I will investigate further in Emporia,Va. I have not found a living family member who knows anything about William C.Davis except to say his family was from Northampton Co.,Va. Interesting as previous generations were active searchers and involved in D A R and U D C, some like myself entered on the Taylor lineage. It Looks like William C. Davis has been in Greensville County, VA since the 1830 census and the subsequent censuses have him being born in VA. He had land, so I think you should definitely check all the deeds for him as grantee and grantor. This could give you a family connection. Also there is a lady named Sally French born about 1800 living with William in 1850 and 1860. She is possibly Sarah E. W. Peebles who married John French in 1838 in Northampton County, NC. I hope this helps. Agnes Ragland is my 6th great grandmother. She was born ca 1734 in Bertie Precinct, NC. She married Ephraim Merritt and after he died she married Joseph Langston (my grandfather) ca 1760 in Granville Co., NC and went to Johnston Co., NC and on to Logan Co., Ky. Agnes father is Stephen Ragland. He was born ca 1688 in New Kent Co., Va and was also in Hanover Co., Va. before removing to Northampton Co., NC ca 1730. He died in Nortampton Co., NC in 1747. Stephen Ragland's 1747 will in Northampton Co., NC states his wife was Mary. Many Ragland researchers claim Stephen married Mary Hudson, dau of John Hudson and Elizabeth Harris. I have seen both volumes on the Ragland family going to Glamorgan and Monmouth, south Wales and have seen pictures of Raglan Castle. The Hudson Association doesn't think Stephen Ragland married Mary Hudson as DNA has her married to another man. I am trying to find Stephen and Mary (unknown) marriage record and Agnes Ragland's birth record in Bertie Precinct ca 1734. I am also trying to find Ragland records in New Kent, Hanover counties in Virginia as well as Northampton Co., NC. Stephen Ragland is the son of Evan Ragland and Susanna Pettus and they attended St. Peter's Church in New Kent Co., Va. I believe this might have been a Episcopal church. Are there any birth records in Bertie Precinct., NC when Agnes Ragland was born? Or any Ragland deeds in VA or NC counties that are mentioned in this posting. I have been involved in genealogy since 1982 and the Ragland line is familiar to me and I realize that most Ragland researchers think Stephen Ragland married Mary Hudson. I am doing my mtDNA mother to mother and Agnes Ragland is my oldest grandmother without breaking the female mother to mother line until Stephen Ragland. Again, the Hudson Association who has done DNA states Mary Hudson married another man and it wasn't Stephen Ragland. However, Stephen did marry Mary (unknown) as his 1747 will names wife Mary. I would appreciate any info on this particular Ragland line of mine and maybe yours. Well, thanks for the info. I do need to get to Halifax County as I have family members there, as well as in Northampton County. But, afraid this trip will only give me time for the research I need to get done in Northampton County. Next week I shall be in Giles County, Tn. for about four days. Perhaps when I return from that trip..... Lordy, Lordy, so much research - so little time!! Hi, John, The cemetery is pretty large. It is a beautiful cemetery, I think, with old trees and a Civil War monument in the center. Lots of very old graves. You might want to stop by the Weldon Museum which is near the river and the cemetery. Also, the Halifax County Library is very, very helpful. Good luck.
