Hello Everybody. I know that everybody is anxious to get their messages posted and to connect with other researchers for the same surnames, but I think that we all need to take a little advice from the Administrator of this Mailing List, who posted a message a few days ago. Could everyone put in at least a Surname in the Subject line of your messages? Not only will this help you get the attention of other researchers, but it helps those who get a whole lot of messages sort through their emails, especially for those getting their messages in the Digest Mode, and it will ensure that your message doesn't get deleted by list members because they don't see anything that may catch their attention. You can go into the details of your families within the body of the message, making sure that you include names, dates, and what you do know about the persons you are looking for. This will help everybody sort through their messages, and you just may find that missing ancestor. It is good to see this list so active again, so let's continue to break down some of those brick walls. Deloris Williams
Mr. Davis, I could use any help you might have. My GGF James Pettiway Johnson was born in Margaretsville, (Northhampton) NC in or about 1833. I can't locate any info. on his parents. I believe his mother's name might have been Marcy (Marcella?) and his father's middle name perhaps began with the letter B. I was told something broke up the family and my GGF went to live with another family. I found in the 1850 Census a James Johnson, age 17, living with the family of William & Nancy Hays in Northhampton but I do not know if this was my GGF or not. There was also an older Johnson(Ivey E.) living with the Hayes family. Also, I would like to find where the name Pettiway joins up with the Johnson name. I believe there might also be a connection to the Branch family as well since one of his children was named Branch Johnson. If anyone can help, thanks in advance. Interested in exchanging information on the family of Charles Thompson and Joanna Washington. Charles left a will in Northampton County 23 November 1787. Children were Charles Thompson Jr. who appears to be the Charles Thompson killed in the RW b about 1761; Hudson Thompson b March 30, 1763, removed to Tennessee, wife Mary (possibly Cryer); Ethelred Thompson, b about 1764, wife Nancy; Clarissa Thompson b about 1766; Pamela Thompson b about 1768 who married Hardy Murphree; Nicholson Thompson b about 1770 and possibly was the Nicholson Thompson who died 1834 in Dayton, Alabama; and Washington Thompson b about 1776 and died 1824 in Greene County, Alabama. Washington represented Marengo County, Alabama, when Alabama applied for statehood in 1819. He left a will in Greene County, Alabama, 1824. In a message dated 8/12/2010 8:36:04 A.M. I am grateful for the efforts that the admins are putting into renewing this board. Thanks so much for your work. My maternal line extends back through the BOON(E) and TYNER families who lived in Virginia and North Carolina. These families intermarried several times over the generations. Of great interest is the marriage of Lucinda "Lucy" TYNER, daughter of Nicholas TYNER and Rebecca EDWARDS of Northampton County, to James BOON, son of Nicholas BOON and Ann (maiden unknown to me). James was born in Hertford County, which was formerly part of Northampton and several other counties. Family lore is that this couple left their small child with her father in Northampton County while they relocated to Kentucky (between 1812-1816). They were never heard from again. My paternal line also includes the BOON(E) family of Lenoir County, North Carolina. I am hoping to discover if this is part of the same line that had earlier married into the TYNER family as I have a major stumbling block. My gggg(?)-grandfather, James BOON, is shown on the 1850 census of Lenoir Co., North Carolina with his family where they are living in the "poor house." He is 70 years old at the time and his family includes Elizabeth (later called Bettie and maiden unknown to me), aged 45, and several small children. Elizabeth is his could his wife or perhaps, a daughter-in-law. I am hoping that my Northampton BOON research will help to resolve that problem by aiding in the discovery of James' lineage. My maternal grandparents were Roy Lee MANNING, son of Samuel and Susan COX MANNING, and Jessie Arlene (later, Pauline) TYNER, daughter of William Nicholas "Nick" and Susan Perry PARK TYNER. The young MANNING couple moved their family to Northampton County sometime before 1916 and stayed until sometime before 1929 when they moved to Virginia. I look forward a healthy board of lively discussion and mutual sharing. Many thanks for your efforts! Vivian CRATCH WOOLLEY

He was born 02 Aug 1729 in Upper Parish, Nansemond Co., VA14, and died 22 Jan 1804 in Northampton Co., NC15. Notes for Mary Norsworthy: !Mary Norsworthy was the only daughter of a wealthy Virginia planter, John Norsworthy. She inherited many slaves but she and John Peelle disposed of them as their religious duty. Among the Historical Papers in Duke University is a list of names and birth dates of slaves born on John Peelle's plantation (60 in all) transferred to his sons Edmund and Thomas, and by them to the Trustees of Rich Square Meeting in 1809. Edmund's wife also had 14 slaves which they transferred at the same time. Another list gives names and birth dates of 20 sent through the Trustees to settle in Indiana. A third list names 28 sent to Liberia in 1827. And a fourth list of 58 later sent to Liberia. John Peelle said the cost of freeing these slaves was great, but he thought he was "more prosperous in basket in store" after doing his duty. (Juliana Peele Harvey) Notes for John Jellary Peelle: !Hugh Buckner Johnston's notes contains a note on John and relates to Robert Peelle 1709 being recorded as a Patriot, for providing services. Quote from Hugh: "Although he was a Quaker, John Peele was apparently a Patriot during the Revolutionary War, because there is a record that Robert Smythe, Paymaster if the United States Army to the State of North Carolina, allowed £118.6.0 to John Peele for supplies since December of 1775." !Built a home in Woodland, NC in 1792, which remained in the family until the 1830's. Notes for Edmund Peelle: !The book "Southern Heroes or the Friends in War Time", published by Cambridge and printed at the Riverside Press 1895. Copyright by the author 1895, Fernando G. Cartland, Page 64. says: "Edmund Peele, a prominent Friend of Rich Square, NC, at one time liberated 125 of his own slaves, took them to Liberia, Africa, and at his own expense, gave each $25 with which to start in his new home, and began his changed life with such reduced resources as proved his action to have been a sacrifice for principle, which was really very great. Yet greater was the inheritance of Christian character which he left his worthy children. It was of far more value than all the slaves he could have given them." His daughter Mary Norsworthy (1725-1802) married John J. Peele of Northampton. I would love to see a copy of John's will. I have an Isabell (Parker?) as his wife. Possibly Ann was his second wife if that is correct. The birthdate of you ancestor seems to suggest that she was not the first wife. I primarily copied pages with my related families but there is information on many other families. I am in the process of figuring out how to get the records posted the Northampton Gen Web for everyone to see. Many times, the pages were small in the books and I would just open up the book and copy both pages just to get the extra information. I will do a quick look and see if I see anything about Tanners. My records stop by 1820 from the books. However, I have a Tanner line but have no idea where they were from. My gr gr aunt Elizabeth Shelton married John Tanner in Choctaw Co. MS ca 1876 and moved to Ellis Co. TX by 1881. Will see what I can find.
