Williams' tenure as assistant pastor, an excerpt from the history of the Upper Town Creek Baptist Church was written by William Calvin Batts (1840-1923) mentions that Bennett Pitt of Edgecombe became pastor in 1869. His son, Cooper (Pitt) followed him in 1882. "I am of the impression," concluded Mr. Batts, "that Elder Crisp became the next and last pastor (he did not become the regular pastor until January 14, 1911), a faithful Godly humble servant to the church.
