    1. [NCNASH-L] POORHOUSE Information
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted some notes about a poorhouse and its cemetery in NASH County. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NORTH CAROLINA on the table of states. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. The CEMETERY section is at the bottom of the page. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

    1. [NCNASH-L] Cemetery Books -- Rocky Mount
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. There is an interesting website at http://www.ci.rocky-mount.nc.us/parks&rec/cemeteries.html It mentions some cemetery books, and I am wondering if these are now available. I am taking the liberty of posting the notes from this page as follows: --------------------------------------- Reprinted from The Telegram, 5-25-97 By Martha L. Reedy, Staff Writer The cemeteries where many local residents will eventually be laid to rest are reflections of the communities where they spent their lives. There are sections for the poor, or for members of a particular religious faith. As was the custom of the South, one cemetery was originally bought for a burial ground for African-Americans, who were once denied inclusion in the greater society. The sun reflects brightly off the stones at Pineview Cemetery. It is quiet in the cemetery. The only sound is of someone mowing grass in the distance. Pineview is one of three city graveyards, the others being Northeastern Cemetery and the Battleboro Cemetery. Northeastern, off Virginia Avenue, was acquired on Dec. 7, 1915. Pineview Cemetery was purchased on May 6, 1889 from what was the Rocky Mount Cemetery Association. Additional land around the cemetery was later purchased by the city to increase the graveyard's area to 70 acres. The latest acquisition by the city is the Battleboro Cemetery which came with the merger of Battleboro and Rocky Mount. This cemetery once belonged to a church. Since the merger is so recent, city officials could offer few details about it. Cemetery neighborhoods Pineview is split into sections, the same way Rocky Mount is divided into neighborhoods. "Pineview Cemetery has a Jewish section set aside for those of the Jewish faith," said Peter Varney, assistant city manager. "It has a veterans' section near Waks Street, and it has a paupers' field near the office on Pineview Street." "There are no headstones or markers in paupers' field. It is for burials where no one will accept financial responsibility for the deceased." Said Linda Moore, city cemetery supervisor, "There have probably been no than five burials a year for the past five years in the paupers' field." Pineview is interesting in that there are plots from 1700s and 1800s. One can almost date some plots by merely looking across the cemetery. There is a line where the angels and larger monuments stop and smaller monuments that are closer to the earth begin. Northeastern is also a reflection of a society of yesteryear: it originally was a cemetery for blacks in the pre-civil rights era South. When acquired by the city, the tract was 2 acres, which has been augmented over the years. All of the plots there have been sold, although not all have been used. In 1941, one of the Workers' Progress Administration (WPA) projects was to collect cemetery records across the United States. Records from North Carolina were sent to the former Department of Archives and History in Raleigh. These records and the records of Dr. Margaret Battle, a member of the Nash Historical Society and a volunteer guide at Stonewall Manor, are in the process of being compiled for Nash County. The cemeteries are listed by name in alphabetical order. The first book contains those whose last names begin with A-J, said Billie Jo Matthews, president-elect of Tar River Connections Genealogical Society. The second book, dealing with county churches and family cemeteries for the last names beginning with K-Z, is at the printer and will be available soon. A poorhouse was built in Nash County in 1823 on Sapony Creek, called "Wardens of the Poor." It was closed down in 1923. Records of the poorhouse accounts are preserved on microfilm. The 2-acre cemetery for the poorhouse is still there, the graves marked by rocks. -------------------------------- Any assistance with information about these books would be appreciated. Thanks, Linda Crannell

He was head of a Halifax County household of 16 "other free" in 1790 [NC:64] and 3 in 1800 [NC:328]. He was the father of i. ?Fanny, born before 1776, head of a Halifax County household of 6 "free colored" in 1820 [NC:157]. ii. ?Gardner, born before 1776, head of a Halifax County household of 9 "free colored" in 1820 [NC:158]. iii. ?Randall, born before 1776, head of a Halifax County household of 10 "free colored" in 1820 [NC:157]. iv. 1. [NCNASH-L] Benjamin Tann
    2. Faye
    3. 7. Benjamin1 Tann, born say 1735, orphan of Anthony Tann, was ordered bound out by the churchwardens of Albemarle Parish in Surry County on 19 December 1744. In 1754 he was an insolvent Sussex County taxpayer [Southside Virginian 6:48]. He moved to Northampton County, North Carolina, where he was listed among the "Black" members of the undated colonial muster roll of Captain James Fason [Mil. T.R. 1-3]. He was occupying land adjacent to James Morgan when Morgan made his 24 November 1774 Nash County will [WB 1:19]. He was taxed in Nash County on 260 acres, a mule, and 5 cattle in 1782. He received 9 pounds payment on certificate number 1859 from the North Carolina Army Accounts on 10 June 1783 and a further 14 pounds, 18 shillings on undated certificate no. 238 [T&C, Rev. War Accounts, Vol I:45 folio 2; XI:48, folio 2]. On 15 October 1787 he purchased 200 acres on the south side of the Tar River on Cooper's Creek in Nash County [DB 4:42]. He was head of a Nash County household of 5 "other free" in 1790 [NC:71] and 8 in 1800 [NC:122]. He sold 10 acres of his land to his neighbor and executor of his will, Jesse Booth, on 10 February 1804 [DB 7:215]. His 11 September 1806 Nash County will, proved November 1806, mentioned his wife Priscilla and two of his children, Benjamin Tann and Amy Locus [WB 4:42]. Priscilla was probably identical to Priscilla Booth whose illegitimate children Jesse and Sylvia Booth were indentured by the Nash County court in April 1778 [Bradley, Nash County Court Minutes I:5]. On 28 September 1807 there was a judgment levied on Benjamin's land for a $35 note in favor of John Lewis [Estates Records 1770-1909, 1807]. The account of sale of his estate on 5 June 1813 mentioned $129.94 divided among six unnamed heirs [DB 9:265]. 2. The Marmaduke Ricks family cemetery is in Tim Rackley's book, "Nash County North Carolina Church & Family Cemeteries K-Z," page 55. Ten graves are listed, and some of the dates and name spellings differ from what Chris has. One says, "difficult to read." I've visited this cemetery too, but I did not make any notes with which I can make a comparison. Chris's information is probably the most accurate, although I wonder about "Langes." I think that may actually be the daughter who married William G. D. Strickland. Tim has the name listed as "Manges H. Ricks," and I have seen it in other places as Maria Harriet, Mancis Harriet, and just Harriet. Rocky Strickland

    3. Hi, Chris: Were the gravestones you listed easy to read or are they so worn that a guess had to be made of some of the names? These appear to be the graves of Marmaduke RICKS, with dates as you list, who married 8 March 1825 Nicey (Nash Co. Marriage Records shows name as Nicy)FINCH, with dates you list for Nancy, daughter of Claiborne FINCH and Sarah HUNT. The others you list are some of their children with the possible exception of Henry and Larges of whom I have no previous record. Some of my records are taken from the book 'FINCH FAMILIES OF DIXIE; 300 Years in the South' by Ruby Finch Thompson which I/we know contains some errors. In fact, some of the dates you list don't match the dates Ruby listed. She also has an 11 year gap in children from 1827 to 1828 so it is not impossible for there to be more children than she listed. I think that I will accept the dates listed on the gravestones in preference to what Ruby listed unless there is compelling evidence to the contrary; hence my question at the beginning of this message. Have you or are you submitting this cemetery survey to the NCGENWEB or NashCoGENWEB page for posting there? Thanks for posting this information. Rocky Strickland and I both connect to this line at the Claiburn FINCH - Sarah HUNT family.
