He married Elizabeth Felton but in doing my research her last name may have been Walston. She may have lived in Wilson County. This has been a stumbling block for me for a good while. They eventually came to Texas via Tennessee with 5 girls. Their oldest daughter Sallie was born in North Carolina also. William died in Texas (abt. 1903) and his wife moved back to North Carolina where she married Stephen Craft (date unknown). She may have used her birth name Celia and was supposedly left some land in Wilson County in Saratoga Township. If anyone has any information on any Burris's in this area please email me. Thanks.

Don't know if this is his mother or grandmother since she is listed as 60 years of age and William is listed as 25 years of age. Did Jonas have any brothers and sisters if so who were they? Who was his parents? I know William moved into Wilson County by the 1860 census and had married Sallie Colston, daughter of Jacob Colston. William also owned one piece of land on Juniper Swamp in Wilson County and I can follow him in the census but nothing else. Can anyone help me with Jonas and William? Jo

I attended my aunt's funeral on January 15, 2000 at Social Union Baptist Church (Nashville). My relatives know that I am the family historian of both sides of my family. While home my uncle told me about a midwife named Berta Hilliard. He said he thought she may have been a Ricks. As she birth children she recorded all birth in a book. I understand this book is now in circulation and being used to proof the birth of people without birth certificates. She delivered babies in the Red Oak - Swift Creek areas. I would like more info on ths lady and book. I hope someone reading this post knows of this or some family member I will be able to contact. I am looking for my grandmother's birth information. She would have went by the names of Berta Moody, Berta Coley or Berta Carter. She is listed on the 1910 census as Berta Moody with her mother, Zeatta Moody. She was 2 years old at the time and her mother was 21. They were living with Sallie and William "Babe" Carter. Sallie is Berta's aunt (mother's sister) and Zeatta's sister. On the 1920 census there is a Alberta Carter (3) and Berta Carter (11 - Berta's last name has now changed to from Moody to Carter, she is also listed as a daughter now) listed in William and Sallie's household. I have no idea who Alberta is. Zeatta is no longer listed in that household. Also I would like to know if anyone has heard of Rocky Land or Rocky Land School and Swift Creek School. It's the area with the big steel trestle bridge. The bridge is called Hilliard Mill Trestle Bridge and was built in 1925. My father was born in 1921 and use to walk across that bridge as a child. A lot of my family members attended these schools. I would like the history and enrollment info of both these schools. My relatives that attended these schools are now in their 50s and 70s. I don't know how long the schools were or have been opened. I know Swift Creek School is now open. I understand Social Union has a cemetery, if you know where the cemetery is located, please let me know. It never crossed my mind on Saturday to ask. My aunt says that is where my great grandmother, Tempie Devereux Whitley was buried. Thank you very much for any help you can give me. My grandmother's grandfather Iicson (Isom) Gray married Lucinda ? and is from the Washington/Bertie/Beauford County (NC) area. Iicson is a Native American, I think Cherokee or Tuscarora Indian. My Granny says he's Cherokee. Their children are Stephen, Henry, Harriet Lucinda and William Gray. His son is William Gray, which William later moved to Halifax, Edgecombe and Nash Counties where he married George Anna Whitley. George Anna is the daughter of Tempie Devereaux (Halifax/Bertie Co.) and Wright (Right) Whitley (related to the Whitleys' in Nashville, Spring Hope, Black Creek (Wilson Co), NC . Wright's mother was a Whitley and his father was a Vick. George Anna used to live in Black Creek just across the railroad tracks. Tempie's (Tempe) parents are Hopey and Alston. Tempie, her parents, brothers and sisters ( Cato, Cloe, Alfred, Nancy, Mary & Mariah) were slaves of John & Thomas Devereaux (Halifax/Bertie Co.). I was told Tempie had a boarding house in Nashville, NC that was were William and George Anna met and married. Tempie was buried at Social Union Cemetery (Nashville, NC).William worked for the Atlantic Coastlie Railroad. William and George Anna's children are Benjamin (Bud), Eva, Stephen, Tempy Ann and Lena Gray. Lena (my grandmother) married James "ST" Robinson (Wayne/Wilson Co.). James is also known as "Buddy", his parents are Louise Barnes and Anderson (Andrew) Robinson. After Anderson's death, Louise married Milton Sanders. Surnames from this union are Roundtree (Rountree), Sanders. Coley, Jones and Jenkins. Tempie has a son named Blount Whitley that is listed as living in Nashville, NC. Warren/Northampton--> Nash County, NC I am looking for information on John MOODY-m- Esther RICKS (Griffins Twp, Nash Co). His first wife was Harriet (last name unknown, 1880 Census). John has a lot of children ( Judge, Clyde, Robert, Nathaniel/Norman, Curtis, Sue, Pat, Annie, Cary, Billie, Johnnie, WIllie, Rose, Charles) between both wives but I am interested in his daughters Zater (Zeatta) and Sallie MOODY. Zater is listed in the 1910 Census as living with her sister and her husband, Sallie and William "Babe" CARTER (father: Henry CARTER (Warren County), mother: Priscilla TONEY (Spring Hope - related to William Toney Funeral Home). Zater never married Burl COLEY but they had a daughter named Berta MOODY. Later Zater and James ALSTON had a daughter named Lula Bell Moody ALSTON. Berta MOODY never married Frederick Douglas ARRINGTON but they had a son named George ARRINGTON who later legally changed his name to George CARTER (Nash County). Berta MOODY is listed in the 1920 Census as Berta CARTER only because she lived in the household of her sister and her husband. In those days if the male head of the family supported you or your children in their home you were called by their last names but illegally of course and that is how most people names are listed in the census records.Berta/Roberta later married Ulysses PITTMAN from Edgecombe County and they later moved to Baltimore, MD. (When they died they were buried at Cedars Hills Gardens/Abutus Cemtery or Mt. Minans Cemetery in Baltimore, MD.) Priscilla and Henry CARTER children are William, Luzianna, Henry, Wiley, Lias & Lazarus (twins), June and Mary. Sallie and William CARTER (1st marriage) children are Almeda, Etta, Henry, John, Josphine, Lillie, Sarah Ada and Willie. Beulah and William CARTER (2nd marriage) children are Arnetta, Elbert, Lajetta and William. The CARTERs attended O'Dell Baptist Church (Littleton) and Manns Chapel Church (Nash County). Some descendants still live in the Swift Creek area. Their church memberships and burials are at Swift Creek Missionary Baptist Church / Cemetery. John MOODY, Henry CARTER (Native American - Warren County) and William CARTER (1/2 Native American) were all listed as land owners. Their lands were passed down through their children and some brought their own land. The majority of the people above were listed as mulattos. Please email all replies to me. Any info whether large or small will be most helpful.
