    3. I checked in Edgecombe County and there is no Tyancoca Bridge. Tyancoca Creek did become Cokey Swamp. This is a 1762 record and Nash County would have been a part of Edgecombe County at that time. I am trying to dig through all the Davises and find where they lived on a map. September 1762, 349-49, Ordered that John Davis be overseer of the Road from Tyancoca Bridge to Braswells Mill Creek & that the following hands work on the same: ABRAM VICKERS, Moses Baker, JNO. VICKERS, John Morris, etc. Edgecombe Co., NC, County Court Minutes, Compiled by Weynette Parks Haun. Book I: 1744-1762. Would the bridge name have been changed later to another name in Nash County? Thanks, -Faye Khroberds@aol.com wrote: > > Fay, > In the North Carolina Gazetteer it list a Tyanoke Creek which says to see > Cokey Swamp. 1. [NCNASH-L] Nash County Townships
    2. Faye
    3. I am researching Josiah Davis of Nash and Wilson Counties, NC. In order for me to place the Davises so that I can see where they lived, I am drawing a map of 1855 Nash County townships. I have a big NC topographic map to go by but am unable to determine what identifying towns, etc. are in the following townships because the map does not identify townships. The map I have is small and says 1855 but may be later. Ferrells Township - Is Whitleys Crossroads in this township? Jackson Township Coopers Township Griffins Township Stony Creek Township If you can supply a creek, branch, crossroads, or anything that would identify these townships, I would appreciate it. For the remainder of the 1855 townships, I have at least one identifying town for each township: Dry Wells Township - Middlesex and Dry Wells Bailey Township - Bailey Bailey Township, Nash County is above Old Fields Township, Wilson County, NC Manning Township - Spring Hope Castalia Township - Castalia Red Oak Township - Red Oak Whitakers Township - Whitakers Dortches Township - Battleboro Rocky Mount Township - Rocky Mount (on dividing line Nash and Edgecombe and also Little Cokey Swamp at the southern portion of Rocky Mount and further down, a branch of Cokey Swamp. From what I can see it begins just inside Nash County and then goes into Edgecombe. I am missing the name of a township that lies to the right next to Stony Creek Township and above Rocky Mount Township in Nash County. It is just below Dortches Township. Fishing Creek - dividing line between Nash and Halifax County, NC Moccasin Creek - dividing line between Nash and Johnston County, NC Thanks Faye

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VUB.2ACE/551.1.1 Message Board Post: Calvin Walter Hales married Lenora Daniel about 1892 and they had the children you named. Lenora's parents were Harris and Mourning J. (Tisdale) Daniel. James W. Hales and Susan Ann/E. (Finch) Hales were the parents of Calvin Walter Hales, as well as the others you listed. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about James W. Hales' parents at this point, either. In the 1904 Nash Co., NC Voter Registration Lists for Dry Wells Township, James W. Hales was said to have voted on the record of James W. Hales. While that could have been his father's name, as was the custom, the person who took the information could just as easily have named the older man standing before him as voting on his own record.

I do not show parents for Walter and Leonora. Is this Walter the one listed as child of James below? I also have James HALES and Susan E. FINCH with children Walter, A.W., John W., J. Oscar m. Allie Martha WOODRUFF, and Alice m. John Wesley FINCH, Sr. I show no parents for James HALES but I do have the line of Susan FINCH as William M(ann?) FINCH and Gillie HIGH, and quiet a bit back on the FINCH and HIGH lines. If Calvin Walter HALES is not the son of James W. HALES, then how are they linked? How are Susan FINCH and Lenora FINCH, if that is her name, linked. I know you list Lenora as DANIEL but was she a DANIEL or was she a FINCH as my mother who knew her believed her to be?

    3. My two children and I went to Forest Hill Cemetery after attending a funeral at Red Oak yesterday (Monday, 21 Aug 2001). We were looking for the grave plot(s) for Elijah Hilliard CROCKER and his children. We finally went to several <G> agencies in Nashville and found help. One of the questions I had was whether the "Civil War Cross" was still on his grave. It was to my surprise. We have removed all of ours in our local cemetery due to theivery and the big market for the crosses in this area. We had a cabinet built and the crosses are now in our church with the names of our veterans listed. HOWEVER, I saw few of them there. The lady who helped us said they have one cross that they do not know to whom it belongs. If your ancestor is buried there and is supposed to have a cross marking his grave, please let me know and I'll get this information to her. We videoed the Red Oak Cemetery of those who are CROCKER-kin...maybe half of the graveyard. (The land was given by Elijah Hilliard CROCKER to the Red Oak Baptist Church.) (We didn't do the whole cemetery; it was rather hot at noon! <G>). We also videoed the CROCKER families at Nashville. Thanks for your help. Surnames: Davenport, Devenport, Roberson, Crawford, Shoemake, Bowman Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VUB.2ACE/549 Message Board Post: I have been reviewing Nash Co., 1820 census excerpts that contain my family (Davenport, John) and am curious about the naming of districts. In the left margin it refers to the Collins District. However, the name of the person enumerating the census seems to be Michael Collins. Were there "Districts" during this period, or were they only elaborating as to it being the enumerating responsibility of Michael Collins. I’m trying to locate just where in Nash Co., NC my John Davenport family lived.
