James Vann Comer has quite a few in his book "Old Moore County, N.C. Vital Statistics" (1784-1890). They are drawn from the years 1784-1903. I would be happy to do a lookup. Gaye Frady
Dear Ms. Frady - Could you please check your records for the birth of an Atlas Jones Martin, born around December 22, 1820 in Moore County, NC? I, and now deceased relatives before me, have been searching for the mother of my ancestor, Atlas Jones Martin, for many, many years. Atlas J. Martin was the son of John Bethune Martin (b. abt. 1791) and Unknown. Atlas Jones (not to be confused with Atlas Jones Martin) was a prominent citizen of North Carolina and a close friend of John B. Martin, his brothers, Angus and Farquar Martin and their father, Murdock Martin (who had a "natural child"). The Martins were of Scottish descent and broke with naming patterns unless Atlas Jones Martin's mother was somehow kin to Atlas Jones. I have found no evidence of such and the family of Atlas Jones seems to be pretty well documented. My great-grandmother and other cousins gained entrance into the Colonial Dames (back in the 1930's or so) via Nancy Hill Harris, wife of John Bethune Martin, before anyone realized that Atlas Jones Martin was born about 5 years before they were married. If marriage bonds are also published in your book, could you also check for a John B. Martin? We've been searching for a marriage record for a John Martin in or around Moore County, NC between about 1810 - 1820. I found a notation of marriage bond for a John Martin and an Elizabeth or Betsy Johnson or Johnston about 1810 in Cumberland County, NC. I don't know if that could be "my" John Martin since it was certainly not an unusual name. Anyway, I truly appreciate you checking on this for me. Thanks so much for your help.
