McCain was a TB hospital for many years. Later they specialized in just lung or chest ailments. My brother had a pneumonia (very acute) caused by breathing chemicals in a photo lab in the Air Force. In 1973 after the acuted phase was over but his lungs had not expanded properly he age 26 was sent there for several months. After several months they opened his chest and tore scar tissue off the interior of the lungs and he has been fine ever since. I don't know when it became a prison. I thought some of the patients that had been at Dix Hill (state mental hospital)for many years were sent there. I think that is where my dads 1st cousin who was at Dix Hill since the late 30's died last year. I spent 3 months at Dix Hill as a student nurse in 1960 so knew this cousin. He was retarded with a turn toward instant violence but never did anything you could call criminal. Interesting. I would like to know more, but It was a TB hospital then expanded to more chest ailments. Kay
Thanks for the info. My grandmother died in 1923 and grand dad went to Aberdeen,Nc. to stay with his sister. He had TB and was close to dying even then. He died by 1924 and i believe he was in that TB hospital. I can't find a record of his death. I sent to Raleigh for it but no luck. I also sent to Moore Co. I believe Hoke was part of Moore at that time.
