Does anyone know if there is a published book of marriages for Moore Co. for the early 1800's, specifically from about 1815-1830? If so, can someone tell me how I may go about finding a marriage from this book or does someone on this mailing list happen to have this marriage book? I am looking for a marriage of a James M. King or James King to a Catherine or a James M. King or James King to anyone for the time frame between 1815-1830? Judy Sanders
Thanks very much for this information. I have a family grave that I will use it on if the pieces are still there. I'll try to describe it for you. While walking through an old cemetery here in Harvey County, KS, I ran across five headstones, broken from their bases. The people who are keeping the cemetery, in very good condition I might add, have built wooden forms the thickness of the various broken stones, laid the stones flat at the head of the grave with the wooden forms around them (with about a 6 inch space all around the stones) and poured concrete into the forms flush with the face of the stones. The stones appear to have been cleaned with mild detergent and a brush. Once dried, it appears that they have poured a coating of either automotive clear coat, or the hard acrylic clear coating found in hobby shops. The end result is a stone too heavy to steal, a coating to protect the face of the stone and the preservation of information for years to come. This may not be new, but it is novel and certainly crucial to genealogy researchers in the years to come. Just thought I would share this with the list, in hopes that it will generate some protection across the nation for the many broken or damaged stones. I might add, that the ones that were in two or three or more pieces, were put together and once coated, all you see are the break lines but they can't be moved. Dean Taylor

Does anyone research Kings in Moore Co. or had any Kings in their lines that might have migrated to Alabama, most specifically Lauderdale Co., AL.? I thought possibly my Kings came from Moore Co., since other families from Moore Co. did migrate to Lauderdale Co., AL.----namely McDonald and Stutts families, probably others. Judy Sanders
Hi fellow researchers: I have some interesting genealogy crossword puzzles at: http://www.asheboro.com/ons/online/puzzles/puzzle_index.html If you enjoy doing puzzles these are not very difficult and have some interesting pictures. Sharing them is one way of saying thank you to all those ListServ members who have volunteered to do lookups for me over the years. Bob bobmoyer@asheboro.com
Kay, I don't know anymore about James or whom he married. I sure wish I did know more about this family. It's always a mystery when doing genealogy. Christine

I have a James H. Allen b 1790 who comes from Moore county according to family oral history. He became quite well of in Bladen county. He had 2 wives and a number of children. Remembering some of the names of the children Katie (Catherine), Milmore, Elizabeth, Jones and others. Several of his children married into the Russ family. Pridgen, Evans, and Smith also show up in this family. If there is any possible connection I' ll dig up the accurate info on another computer. Kay

The only Oates listed on 1790 census is Stephen. In the book "Miscellaneous Ancient Records of Moore County, N.C., there is the following reference: "Oates - Stephen: Oates seems to have lived north of Carthage, toward the Horseshoe of Deep River. In February, 1787, the court appointed a guard of 13 of the more prominent menn of the county to convey Stephen Oates to gaol (?) at Wilmington. In May 1789, and afterward, Stephen was called to serve as juror. Stephen was the father of John Oates, who later bought the Kinchen (Kitchen) place on Herd's Creek, near the present Lamb's Grove Church." Hope this is of some help to you.
Le, Moore County was established in 1784, primarily from Cumberland Co. There is a John Oats, son of Stephen Oats, in a list of 1815 Moore County Landowners, that is published in "Miscellaneous Ancient Records of Moore County, NC" by Rassie E. Wicker. The Oats family has several entries throughout the book. Do you have this reference book? Is this your Oat(e)s family you are researching? I don't have any direct knowledge of the King family, but this may be helpful: - 1790 census in Moore County had a Stephen King with 2 males 16or older, 1 male under 16, and 2 females. Also a William King with 1 male 16 or over, 2 males under 16, and 1 female. -In "Ancient Records of Moore County, NC", Rassie Wicker says of these Kings, "Little record of this family. They lived on either the upper reaches of Herd's Creek or just over the ridge now traversed by 15-501 on the heads of Governor's Creek". - In the above cited book there are two references to a Nathan King. Once in a deed from Thomas Armstrong, Sheriff, for 300 acres on Governor's Creek on January 30, 1783, and again in an Affadavit by Capt. Nathan King on January 3, 1782, wherein he takes an oath that the house of his father was beset by David Fanning and his troops and was plundered and robbed. - The 1850 census in Moore County has a Stephen King, 45, Laborer: Delilah, 38; Mary, 17; and William, 16. Doubt if this helps, but it might! Tom. Steve and Judy Sanders wrote: > There is a James King household in the 1830 Moore Co., NC census. There were 3 males under age 5 and 1 male aged 20-30. He came to North Carolina about 1810, and he was married to a Margaret, but I don't know her maiden name, but she was born in 1790 in Scotland.
