Is the "Moore County Cemetery Book" mentioned in a recent post available for purchase, and if so, from whom? Thanks.
Can any help me concerning The Pineland School at Salemburg.I've tried and tried to get in formation concerning this school as Mollie Roberts made a name for herself in the educational field.I was hoping if I could find more about her I could learn more on my Jones line. I just can't seem to find the parents of my Allen William Jones who married Velina Brooks. This has been along time brick wall for me.Any help would greatly be welcome.I have some information on Jones and would be glad to share. Thank you, Lois Information from Brooks and Kindred Families by Ida Brooks Kellam Quote "Velina Brooks married Allen Jones and had T.Jones who married Bright Roberts and they were parents of Mollie Roberts who made a great name for herself in the educational field of her state. Bright Roberts was the father of Mrs.W.J.Jones,who with her husband developed Pineland School at Salemburg.Mrs Jones died 1945." Page 153 and 215

He is first found on the Washington Co. Virginia Tax Lists in 1804 as Hartwell Bell. In 1805, he is listed as Hartwell Sawyers, alias Bell and the following year, in 1806, he is listed as just Hartwell Sawyers. His son, Leander McChesney Sawyers, born 1819, is my great-great grandfather. Hartwell Sawyers lived in Washington Co. VA and Sullivan Co. TN from at least 1804 until his death in the early 1850's. Hartwell also had sons John and William and daughters Nancy, Susan, and Catherine, all born between 1810-1829. Any help with a connection between Sawyers, Bell, and even the name Hartwell would be greatly appreciated. The Sawyers name is sometimes spelled Sayers or Sawers on records that I have researched. Thanks, Kevin Miller
Hello lists, A notice to all of you that might be interested in Alston or slave records of Randolph and Chatham Co. I've been exchanging data for several weeks with a lady from Ohio, who has material and records from that state about slaves and family from Chatham Co., N.C. It was a mystery/puzzle that has been solved with a lot of work/digging into old records of estates and vital records. I'm still doing transcriptions and finding new links. So, will be adding them as I find them. In the meantime, if you are interested, check it out. It is in the Chatham page http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchatha/chatham.htm in the "African American Resources" section http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchatha/alston_or.html If anyone has any information that could be added to this site, please let me know. Is anyone else researching this Shields family? Thanks! Descendants of Elizabeth Paulling and John Shields Generation No. 1 1. JOHN SHIELDS was born January 16, 1781 in NC (Probably Moore County), and died February 14, 1859 in Dallas County, Alabama. He married (1st) ELIZABETH1 PAULlING, who was born in Orangeburgh District, SC. He married (2nd) Keziah Hagan February 7, 1835 In Alabama. Notes for ELIZABETH PAULlING: I believe Elizabth Paulling/Pauling/Paulding to be descended from Robert Paulling and his wife, Harriette, who were both born in Sussex, England and who came to America between the years 1725 and 1732. The plantation home of Robert and Harriett was named "Inter Sylvas". Robert and Harriet Paulling had sixteen children. Edward Ruffin Paulling has a wonderful site at Family Tree Maker that concerns two of the known sons, William Paulling and John Paulling. John, the elder, died young. I do not know if he married or had children. William was married three times. I believe my Elizabeth is the daughter of John or William or that there was another brother out of the sixteen children. Broun wrote at first from Montgomery and then from the plantation he had purchased near Church Hill in Lowndes County, Alabama. Dear Jim - My Nancy Hill Harris is the daughter of Arthur Harris and Mary "Polly" Myrick or Myrich. Arthur is the son of West Harris Sr and (I've forgotten her name because I'm typing this from memory) so we are talking about the same family. My great-grandmother hired Rassie Wicker to research her family tree for Colonial Dames Membership. That is when we found out the marriage date for Nancy Hill Harris and John Bethune Martin did not jive with the birth date for "their" son, Atlas Jones Martin. Previously, several family members, now dead, had become members on the West Harris line. I ended up joining via another line from SC, but finding Atlas Jones Martin's mother is about to drive me crazy! My great-grandmother had Mr. Wicker work on it, my grandfather wrote tons of letters to elderly family members to find out anything about her, my father just collected and kept up with the files already started and traced land records (his forte'), wills and such to add to the files! . Ihave been working on this one item for almost 6 years (I know that's not long when talking about genealogy) and have spent almost 3 days from the time the doors opened until they asked me, very politely, to leave. I went to the court houses in Carthage and Troy (I think), but they were closed at the time. If John B. Martin was born in 1791, he could have gotten married as early as 1810, or so. The only child we know of from that union is Atlas Jones Martin who was born in 1820. Unless the "wife" died tragically with the other(?) children, I have to assume that either John B. Martin and unknown were married shortly before 1820 when A.J. Martin was born or that she was unable to get pregnant or carry a child to term. That leads me to wonder if she died during childbirth. John did not marry Nancy Harris until 1825. Who took care of Atlas Jones Martin until then? Did he marry in between or did he live with his mother and/or sisters who took care of the child? His mother died ! in 1824 so it would make sense that he would remarry as soon as he no longer had her to take care of his son. Or, did John Bethune Martin's wife not die during childbirth? Or was Atlas Jones Martin illegitimate and therefore out of respect for John Martin's father he was not named after Murdock Martin? Questions...questions...questions...Oh well, if anyone has any thoughts on the subject, please share! Thanks and peace! I am interested in the parents of Margaret BETHUNE, b. 1777 Isle of Skye, Scotland, who married my first cousin (4 times removed) John TYSON, b. 19 Mar. 1784 in Moore Co, NC. I'm wondering if Margaret is connected to these Bethunes. John TYSON and Margaret BETHUNE TYSON are buried in Old Scotch Graveyard in Moore Co. Children of John and Margaret were: Eliza, who married MCINTOSH; Jane, who married MCGILVARY; John Jr., who died at 19; Aaron Moore, who died at 11; Neill B., who died at 17; Thomas Bethune TYSON who married Mary Jane PERSON in 1842 in Moore Co and who co-founded the Tyson & Jones Buggy Company in Carthage, Moore Co.; and Margaret Ann TYSON, who married William Dawson SMITH in Moore Co. in 1835. I would also be interested in information on the families the Tyson daughters married into, ie MCINTOSH, MCGILVARY, PERSON, and SMITH. I am looking for the FIRST wife of my John Bethune Martin. He was born about 1791 in Moore County, NC, in an area that may have been Bladen or Cumberland County at one time. He married (2nd) Nancy Hill Harris on August 24, 1824 in Montgomery Co. Before his marriage to Nancy Harris, John B. Martin had a son named Atlas Jones Martin, who was born December 22, 1820, North Carolina. Nancy Hill Harris is listed as his mother on all family records, but I do not see that it is possible. John and Nancy had a child soon after they were married and it was not Atlas Jones Martin, so his date of birth is not in question. The marriage date is in our family records and was found in Raleigh at the Archives in published marriages from a NC newspaper. My John Martin was Clerk of County Court for Montgomery County (at Lawrenceville) in the 1820's and 1830's. His name appears on many documents as Jno. B. Martin, Esq. His brothers were Angus and Farquar Martin. His father was Murdock or Murdoch Martin. They were all involved in government and were friends and neighbors with a gentleman named Atlas Jones. Since John Martin's second marriage was published, I wonder if his first marriage (if they were married) was? If he was married to Atlas Martin's mother, it would have been in 1819 or 1820, I would assume, due to John B. Martin's age. Even then, he would only have been about 18 or 19 years of age. John was born in America, but his parents were from Skye in Scotland. I'm thinking they would have used whatever "Scottish Naming Patterns" may have been in effect at that time. Why did J.B. Martin name his son Atlas Jones Martin, after Atlas Jones? Was A. J. Martin illegitimate? Was the mother estranged from her family and did she die during childbirth and therefore the child was not named after her father? >From what little I have been able to gather, Atlas Jones was in between the age of John Martin and his father, Murdock Martin. I do not believe that my John Bethune Martin's son, Atlas Jones Martin, could have been the grandson of Atlas Jones. I have not ruled out a family connection between the families of John B. Martin and Atlas Jones, however. I am very interested in burial records from Harmony Presbyterian Church, now Ellerbe Presbyterian Church, in Moore County; Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church, located on the border of Montgomery and Richmond Counties; Longstreet Presbyterian Church; Bensalem Church and the Old Scotch Graveyard in Moore County. These are the locations where most of my ancestors (that I have been able to find) attended church and/or are buried. I don't expect anyone to produce my missing ancestor, but if any of you can offer hints, tips, suggestions, leads, etc. on how to go about searching for the first wife of John Martin from marriage records, church records, cemetery records, bastardy bonds, etc., I would appreciate ANYTHING!!! Are there census records for Moore and/or Montgomery County for 1820? I spent 2 days in Raleigh almost two years ago and was unable to find her, but it was my first trip to an Archive for genealogy research. If I could ever get back, I might know a little more about what to look for and where!?! Thanks so much for your help. Fredreica speyer@bellsouth.net
Maybe my reply to Betsy Tyson will help you. When were your Bethune ancestors living? Fred According to sources found at the NC Archives, my ancestor, Capt. John Martin, "had 300 acres (forty cleared) on MacLendon's Creek in Cumberland County, NC. His wife, Marion MacLeod, apparently died c1784 in Moore Co. and is believed to be the first person buried in the "Old Scotch Graveyard " on his land." There is a list of persons buried at the Old Scotch Cemetery in Anthony Parkers book, Moore County Cemeteries. Also Myrtle Bridge has transcribed the stones that could be found and read at http://home.att.net/~hbridges/scotchcem.htm. I went to see the graveyard about two years ago - it was a mess. There were broken beer bottles and other trash scattered about. Anyway, Flora Bethune, John Martin's daughter-in-law, was raised in the Martin household as a foster child after the Rev. War. Her mother, Christian Campbell Bethune, was widowed and taking care of her elderly grandparents nearby. I would bet your Margaret is kin to my Flora. Have you checked out Don Smith's database at rootsweb Worldconnect? There is also a great MacLeod site that includes many of the Bethune relations listed at glyphix. I'll see if I can find the site. This is all off the top of my head, but I hope it helps. I am hunting for information on the following MARTIN ancestors and relatives from the areas in and around Moore and Montgomery counties in North Carolina. Tony Parker has published a book with information about those buried in most Moore County cemeteries. He works at the Moore County Library in Carthage and a copy of the book is in the library. I'm not sure your Craine Creek Cemetery is included, but I'd be surprised if it isn't. Tom. Frank & Donna Merrit wrote: > While visiting Cameron NC, Moore Co. No early King marriages on the site. Moore County Register of Deeds does have a book with marriages for the period you are looking for, i.e., early 1800's. I've been there and looked through it. You'll probably have to go there to look through it. You might try calling them at 910-947-6370.
