    3. Judy, Yes, there is a library in Carthage, the county seat of Moore County. There is also a good library in Sanford, which is in neighboring Lee County; but Lee County was formerly part of Moore County. I believe their are libraries in Pinehurst, Aberdeen and Southern Pines, which are all in the southern part of the county, and as you are probably aware, big golf country! Must get these in order before going into 1900 and 1910. I have corresponded with some of you, but due to a computer glitch I do not have your names and email addresses now. Please contact me directly if you are interested and will assist in getting our Johnsons put in their rightful places. Martha

    3. Hello Sue, I saved this message posted by you in December. My time has been limited on the computer up till now with our health problems. I will gladly pay for your gas, time etc. and of course for the pages if you are still willing to copy pages from Tony Parkers Book. I have hit some dead-ends and this is probably the only way I am going to find some of these elusive folks of mine. The surnames I am looking for are: McDougald/McDugald.....Johnson.....Pierce/Pearce.....Savage....and Buie. My research certainly would have been easier if we had retired in that area as we once thought of doing (years ago)....We have been looking at places even now in North Carolina. Found one in Laurinburg and the website is very nice. Please let me know how you want to do this ......just certain names or all of a surname....I don't know how the book is set up. I know I have searched for this book for a long time. Would appreciate any help you can give me on this. Thanks.. 1. [NCMOORE] POORHOUSE Information for NC
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com Please excuse the cross postings, but we just published poorhouse information about a great many counties in NORTH CAROLINA. Our partial list of counties known to have poorhouses includes: Beaufort/Buncombe/Burke/Cabarrus/Caswell/Cleveland/Craven/Cumberland/Davidso n/Duplin/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Halifax/Iredell/Johnston/Lenoir/Lincol n/Mecklenburg/Montgomery/Moore/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Richmond/R ockingham/Rowan/ Rutherford/Stokes/Surry/Warren/Wayne Our list of counties for which the NC State Archives has poor relief and/or poorhouse records includes: Alexander/Ashe/Bertie/Beaufort/Buncombe/Carteret/Chatham/Cherokee/Cleveland/ Craven/Currituck/Davie/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Hyde/Iredell/Lincoln/Mon tgomery/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Pasquotank/Perquimans/Person/Polk /Rowan/Rutherford/ Sampson/Stanley/Surry/Union/Wake/Wayne/Yadkin We have provided more historical notes from the archives on the page with their holdings listed. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NORTH CAROLINA on the table of states. If you will scroll down to the section on "Local Notes", you will find the poorhouse list; and then scrolling down to "Records", you will see the archives holdings list. These entries are marked with yellow NEW arrows. (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

    3. Hi Susan, Yes, those are the correct dates for my third and fourth Great Grandfathers. Roderick is my Ggrandfather and Rebecca Wilcox was his wife. They moved to Arkansas and are buried there. I know we have McIver relatives in this family line also. My Mother, Mary McIntosh Burnett did a great deal of work back in the 50s without the use of computers etc. She corresponded with R.E.Wicker and Mr. Monger who with Mrs. Juanita Vollintine re-published the 1922 McIver book by Mrs. Helen Smedberg McIver of which I have their 1956 copy and all the letters to and from them. I ran into a dead end when I tried to follow up on my third Great Grandmother, Christian Monroe,Munro,McIntosh. The Munro line has me stumped. Do you have any connection with this family? I would be happy to share any information with you. Thank you for you quick response. Sincerely, Barbara Roseborough Jacksonville, FL ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We have two Alexander McIntoshes. One born 1725 and one Alexander born about 1765. He married Christian Monroe and had children William, Roderick, and Duncan. Could this be your line? Susan McIver Abernathy

    2. Glenn Sheffield
    3. Greetings Moore County List! I am working on my Sheffield line from Southwest VA. I am trying to see if there is a tie in with the Sheffield line in Washington Co VA and the Sheffield/Shuffle line from Moore County North Carolina. My 3rd great grandfather was Whitney Sheffield. He is listed as Shuffle on the 1840 and 1850 Washington Co VA census. I have just recently verified that Whitney served in the Washington Co VA Militia in 1831. Which of course places him in Washington Co VA at that time. Whitney was born in 1801, location has not been verified. Census data states that Whitney was born in VA. When I noticed Whitney Sheffield listed as Shuffle I thought perhaps there were other Sheffield's listed as Shuffle so I began to search. I have verified the info below of of original Census Images from Ancestry.com image collections. MOORE COUNTY North Carolina Everet Shuffle 1800 John Shuffle 1800 Isham Shuffle 1800 Isham Shuffle 1810 Isaac Shuffle 1810 Everet Shuffle 1810 John Shuffle 1810 WASHINGTON CO VA Abram Shuffle 1820 Isaac Shuffle 1820 Witney Shuffle 1840 Whitley Shuffle 1850 Whitney Sheffield married Mary Jane Snyder born 1797 in Carter County TN. I have more info on my web site www.glennsheffield.com on Whitney's family. ------------ Best regards, Glenn Sheffield mailto:SheffGen@bellsouth.net
