I am hoping someone with knowledge of Montgomery County families and history can offer me some assistance in unearthing my ancestors. In the 1850 census of Montgomery Co. Malcolm STEWART, age 22, is living with the family of Alexander STEWART, 34. (household # 233). I believe Alexander was his older brother. I also believe this is the same Malcolm Stewart who married Mary Jane CALHOUN in Richmond Co in 1854; the same Malcolm who was divorced by her in 1856; and who reconciled with (re-married?) her in the 1860's. Theirs is quite an interesting story and they are my great-great-grandparents. But I am unable to trace Malcolm's family. In the 1840 census of Montgomery Co there is also an Alexander STEWART household containing only two males. Their ages would match those of Alexander and Malcolm from the 1850 census, and would seem to indicate two things: 1) Alexander, at age 24, wasn't married yet and; 2) Malcolm, at age 12, was orphaned. I don't believe there are any other households in Montgomery Co in 1840 with the Stewart surname. However, in the 1830 census of that county there are five Stewart households. Alexander was not one of them because he would have been too young. To say the same thing a different way, all five of the Stewart families living in Montgomery Co in 1830 are gone by 1840. Westward migration would be a likely explanation, but my point is, I am unable to connect Alexander and Malcolm with any of these -- or with any other -- families. If anyone has any information or suggestions to offer on finding Malcolm, I would be grateful for your assistance.
