Yes, it is best to email the person off the list and tell them, politely, that they may be infected with whatever it is. I am a big believer in getting word out and even when we all feel like we will get sick if we hear of it again, we have to remember that new folks are coming into the world of pc's and those that have been around, could simply have not heard about it, and it is a tricky little deal to begin with. I too, fell for it a few months back and infected my mother's machine. I write the list to make you all become aware that if I am getting it, that you might get it too if you have posted to the list recently and might be one of those unread messages sitting in the infected machine's email program. I usually get it since I post more often then others due to the marriage announcements for Montgomery that I make. So what I am saying is that you need only worry if you have recently sent a message to a list or to a group of people or to just one person and one of those people are infected and has not read your message yet. Then you will get your message back with the reply to look at the attachment, hence making it seem that someone is trying to send something in reference to what you have asked for. But unbeknown to the sender, he or she usually does not know they they are infected when the mail is sent out. Usually it is thru a message privately sent by someone to warn them that it has happened and to try to get it off their machine, and help with how, if possible. That is about all we can do, warn folks, hope they pay close attention to the warning, be on the look out for it to come your way. It will in time, for sure. Just do not open the attachment and all will be fine. Delete the message off your system without opening it. If you do not open the attachment you are not infected. If you did, and got a warning stating you could not open the attachment because it was corrupted or whatever it says, you are infected, no ands, ifs, or buts, about it. Not your fault, only the person who makes these things up. Closing this now to say yet again, do not open any attachment from anyone who has replied to your message with only one sentence, and that being similar to "Look to Attachment." Regardless of who sends it to you, don't open the attachment. But someone still will, sure as the sun will rise tomorrow. Cathy

Cathy has reported having been hit numerous time by a worm which appears to be aimed at Montgomery List subscribers. I would like to track down the originator if we can. How many Montgomery List members have been hit? I haven't been hit with a worm of any sort in over a month. I also subscribe to many other Rootsweb lists. Bob

I was hit by badtrans in early May. Classic example, I had requested information from another list, received a reply from a list member and opened the attachment before I thought. I have gotten rid of that bad boy. What you have to remember is that you will receive a reply from an individual, not the list itself. If you receive a message with the virus try to remember who sent it because they may be unaware that they have it. Acording to Symantec, even though your anti-virus program catches it and you delete those files, it still manages to deposit an .exe file that has to be deleted manually. See Symantec referenced earlier as you will find instructions there. Gary

Hi folks, Just a reminder, since I have been hit about 8 times in two days, about the W32.Badtrans.13312@mm worm. It comes with an attachment, that has different names. About 12 in all. All named differently. You will get a message, that will be in a reply to one of your messages that you have sent out, yourself, but the infected party has yet to get around to reading yet. This worm affects all unread mail in your mail program. When you go to open this attachment (yes, many are still opening) you will get a warning, that the file is corrupted. Darn tootin! All will be fine until you close down or reboot your machine. As you reboot, it will infect your system, send out mail to all unread messages in YOUR inbox, then attach one of its many infected attachments. One tip off, is the way these files are saved. Double file extensions. Example, pics.pdf.scr or something similar to that. At any rate, you will need to check your systems to make sure that you are not infected and please go to this site for help on how to do just that and to clean your system if you are infected. This worm is hitting all over, and no matter what you do, it seems to still come in. I have tried to set up a block sender, in my rule department in my mail program but without luck. Still it comes in. Think this is due to the fact that it responds to your mail. The site to check out is: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ Good luck everyone. It is not hard to get rid of. And once you set up your virus program, set it up to update daily, once a week at least so that you have the newest protection on your system, and also make sure that you have your program to "prompt you for action" or you may become infected and not be aware of it. Sorry to have taken your time, list, with this. But wanted to get this out there one more time, since it is coming in a flurry again with the Montgomery List as well as one more county in NC that I am on at the moment. Remember, this worm works by tricking us into thinking that someone is trying to help us. In other words, if I sent out a message, asking for help on my Cranford line, when it hit the infected machine, it will turn my message back around, send it to me, again, but add one line at the bottom, "look to attachment" and nothing else. Whatever you do, DON'T Look to the attachment. When in doubt, write the party back and ask if they sent you an attachment, get them to reply and then ask them to resend the attachment.
