The jerks are trying hard lately to put the genealogy community out of commission. Today I got a "helpful" message telling me that I should go to my C:\windows\system file and delete any files there to prevent a stealth virus. I guess they thought that if they can't get the virus to me in a file which will do damage automatically, I might not know enough to NOT delete all my system files on my own initiative. Sorry, I know enough about computers to know that there ARE files in my C:\windows\system directory which run the machine. It isn't going to happen. Cynthia McDaniel <<Subj: RE: [NCMONT] Re: [BALLARD-L] problems on genealogy lists Date: 11/28/2001 7:15:08 PM Eastern Standard Time From: smallsystems@earthlink.com (smallsystems) To: Ruhi19@aol.com Cynthia, If you have a variation of the SirCam virus (worm), you may not be getting infected messages from somewhere else. They can be created on your own machine. The first test is to click <Start>, <Find>, <Files and Folders>, and enter the word "scam". Make sure you that the "Look in" box contains "My Computer" or "C:\". If you have the virus, it will find at least one file in the "c:\windows\system" directory. Let me know if I can be of any help. I just got a message titled: Re: Re: DUGGER: Scarborough question From: _e.h.yarbrough@worldnet.att.net (E YARBROUGH) with an attachment but no text message. I sent a message to the person asking him to confirm that he intended to send me an attachment since I wasn't expecting anything from him and his name is unfamiliar (although there are Yarbroughs affiliated with the Scarboroughs). The message came back as undeliverable. This indicates to me that there is a higher risk than normal that the attachment has a virus and I'm not going to open it. I'm letting the list know about it because someone apparently picked up my email address from the list and possibly the sender's email address also (I understand that the _ is a tricky way to get around using an email address. It could mean that the person who really uses that email address (minus the _) has received a virus. This is actually the third time I've received such a message. The first time it happened, it was a sales pitch. The last two have had attachments and could be worse and since the subject line is picked up from a legitimate message, it may be more likely to cause damage. It could happen to someone else. Be warned and be careful. Cynthia McDaniel
The only way to be sure that you have no residual virus parts is to examime the registry files. If you need help, please contact me privately. I have cleaned the SirCam worm off of three machines in the last two weeks. Lonnie smallsystems@earthlink.net
This is NOT TRUE. I have deleted the kernel32.exe 5 times now--Since i have been hit five times in two days. I don't click on the attachments at all. I heard on my police scanner that all the police and sheriff's computers were screwed up this morning. diane ----- Original Message ----- From: Richard B. Not to prolong this discussion but realizing several are new to computers as I once was, here is a link for the latest data on BadtransB **including a link to download a patch** that will protect your machine if it is one of the vunerable ones. http://www.datafellows.com/v-descs/badtrs_b.shtml Long ago someone suggested I bookmark the F-Secure website, which has an easily searchable database that has helped determine whether something is a true threat or a hoax [including all those so-n-so is sick or missing and 'please forward to everyone you know'--most are just hoaxes aimed at jamming the lines]. It has been an invaluable resource in learning more about new threats such as this one. The link, and I recommend it be bookmarked to keep each computer user up-to-date, is: http://www.datafellows.com/virus-info/ Norton's virus/hoax info can be found at [& sometimes gives a little different data]: http://www.symantec.com I second keeping virus protection software up-to-date but sometimes even that's not enough........ She is right folks, I had have it sent to me as well today. Spent the better half of the day and night scanning my hard drives to make sure I came up clean. Update your virus protection folks before scanning for bugs/worms. And I second, that you do not have to open the attachment. Simply trying to delete the message requires you to send to quarantine a second time. I was unable to grab the email address of the sender who is infected due to this happening, and so I am hoping the person will realize soon they are infected. I am sure this person is not the only one infected and so I am begging you all to keep your virus protection current by going to the antivirus program's website weekly and downloading the newest virus definitions, which is the only way you will have a chance at staying clean, nothing is more important, folks, if you value anything on your computer. Being on a mailing list does not infect you, it is the people who either open, or do not keep their programs current, or scan before opening, or as in this case, simply get a message that does not need to be opened due to the script embedding itself in the actual email message that is sent out. Being in just one person's address book or emailing just one person (ever) puts you at risk. The only way to totally avoid bugs and worms is to never open your email program, but beware, some websites can infect you just the same. Good luck, here is hoping that you will update, scan your machine, "all files" not just program files and come up clean. Subject: Fw: Virus---- Worm--- Worm By the way, i was advised once that the best way to prevent a virus from sending out email from your computer-- is to make the first entry in your address book to: **!00001 with no address. that stops the computer from sending additional mail since it can't get pass the first one. Do a search for files, and if you have a file named kernel32.exe --you are infected. This infection can happen even if you do not open the attachment. Until this clears up I won't be reading any mail that comes with an attachment. It will be deleted by deleting groups of mail since I cannot even click on it, to delete it without being infected. diane ----- Original Message ----- From: John S. I believe that I stopped the worm before it sent out to the people in my address book. BUT If you receive an email from me, please ignore it. The following is the instructions for removing it with Norton Antivirus. Norton did not detect this before it infected my computer. Apparently just opening the email executed the .scr file imbedded in the email.

Folks, Many have written me in the past to ask about how to contact the person in charge of the Montgomery County, NC Page at USGenWeb. For a long, long time, the site was ghost site, and in that I mean, that email contact could not be made with the person taking care of the site and the site was not updated. I do not believe this will be a problem now since Diane has taken the site over. She emailed me this evening to let me know. The site can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncmontgo/ If you have been there and have not seen changes in a long time, you may want to check the site after she settles in. Please note, I am not a part of USGenWeb and you will need to direct mail to Diane if you wish to donate items to the USGenWeb site as to not create confusion between her site and mine. Her email is: y8g3n2ws@coastalnet.com I have also let her know that she is welcome to announce any new items on this list that she places on the site as is anyone who has a site related to Montgomery County, NC genealogy.
