    1. [NCMONT] Steeds
    2. Does anyone out there know where the Steeds generally resided? Our Bailey married a Steed daughter and lived there from about 1800 until about 1835. I know this is a stab in the dark but we have to try all angles that we can in search. Thanks, C.M.

    3. Thanks, Cathy, for continuing to post this information on your website and let us know on the list. I am interested in this one. I think I have the right family but may have some wrong information about it. Is anyone else researching this branch of the Scarboro(ugh) family? I have 3 different Benjamin Franklin Scarboroughs. If this is the correct family, the second marriage may belong to a different Ben Franklin Scarborough, since the marriage license says that Caroline is still living in 1891. Here's what I have: Descendants of Benjamin Franklin Scarborough 1 Benjamin Franklin Scarborough b: 1836 in Mt. 3. Hi C.M., The Montgomery Centennial Map can be bought at $10.00 each. (I believe this is the price that they charge for them.) This is truly wonderful map. I have a copy. It is more than just a map, has names listed, as well as historical facts scattered throughout the map, rivers and creeks, mines, etc. A wonderful buy! It is an older map and huge in size, would make a great item to frame and place on a wall. Has names of some of the early homesteaders and other notations throughout the map. To order, send to this address: Montgomery Historical Society, PO Box 644, Troy, NC 27371 I hope that can be of some help. If anyone else has any ideas, please share with the list. For a new one, you can go to expedia.com and click on maps, then on the map page, type in Montgomery county in the place name, then click find a map. You may want to enter Troy at the top, this will bring up another page, with a drop down menu, with all places named Montgomery County, look for the one for NC and click the find map again and it will come up on the next page that loads. Not the best of maps though. 1. [NCMONT] Wife of John Martin
    2. Paul & Fredreica Speyer
    3. I am looking for the FIRST wife of my John Bethune Martin. He was born about 1791 in Moore County, NC, in an area that may have been Bladen or Cumberland County at one time. He married (2nd) Nancy Hill Harris on August 24, 1824 in Montgomery Co. Before his marriage to Nancy Harris, John B. Martin had a son named Atlas Jones Martin, who was born December 22, 1820, North Carolina. Nancy Hill Harris is listed as his mother on all family records, but I do not see that it is possible. John and Nancy had a child soon after they were married and it was not Atlas Jones Martin, so his date of birth is not in question. The marriage date is in our family records and was found in Raleigh at the Archives in published marriages from a NC newspaper. My John Martin was Clerk of County Court for Montgomery County (at Lawrenceville) in the 1820's and 1830's. His name appears on many documents as Jno. B. Martin, Esq. His brothers were Angus and Farquar Martin. His father was Murdock or Murdoch Martin. They were all involved in government and were friends and neighbors with a gentleman named Atlas Jones. Since John Martin's second marriage was published, I wonder if his first marriage (if they were married) was? If he was married to Atlas Martin's mother, it would have been in 1819 or 1820, I would assume, due to John B. Martin's age. Even then, he would only have been about 18 or 19 years of age. John was born in America, but his parents were from Skye in Scotland. I'm thinking they would have used whatever "Scottish Naming Patterns" may have been in effect at that time. Why did J.B. Martin name his son Atlas Jones Martin, after Atlas Jones? Was A. J. Martin illegitimate? Was the mother estranged from her family and did she die during childbirth and therefore the child was not named after her father? >From what little I have been able to gather, Atlas Jones was in between the age of John Martin and his father, Murdock Martin. I do not believe that my John Bethune Martin's son, Atlas Jones Martin, could have been the grandson of Atlas Jones. I have not ruled out a family connection between the families of John B. Martin and Atlas Jones, however. I am very interested in burial records from Harmony Presbyterian Church, now Ellerbe Presbyterian Church, in Moore County; Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church, located on the border of Montgomery and Richmond Counties; Longstreet Presbyterian Church; Bensalem Church and the Old Scotch Graveyard in Moore County. These are the locations where most of my ancestors (that I have been able to find) attended church and/or are buried. I don't expect anyone to produce my missing ancestor, but if any of you can offer hints, tips, suggestions, leads, etc. on how to go about searching for the first wife of John Martin from marriage records, church records, cemetery records, bastardy bonds, etc., I would appreciate ANYTHING!!! Are there census records for Moore and/or Montgomery County for 1820? I spent 2 days in Raleigh almost two years ago and was unable to find her, but it was my first trip to an Archive for genealogy research. If I could ever get back, I might know a little more about what to look for and where!?! Thanks so much for your help. Fredreica speyer@bellsouth.net

    3. First before I announce the following marriage, I want to ask all of you to let me know if you come across a page that is not working right, not opening for you, or if anything is wrong with it. I am learning this new computer and windowsXP at the same time. Many of the programs I used before are giving me a fit now, so I am doing things by hand, all html coding done by hand. I very well may make many errors, and I am copying and pasting lots of the html, so I may forget to correct part of the paste job, or whatever, so if you find something just not right, email me please and let me know. Please keep an eye on me, I am bound to make a mistake sooner or later. I am sure of it. Ok, now for the marriage: J.T. 3. Hi list, We have a new chart online now thanks to Karen Groce! This one being: The Descendants of William GREEN http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cranford/mont0565.html Will be back at work on the Montgomery Page shortly, but am trying to transfer data from one machine to another and not having luck. Soon as that is done (and hopefully without data loss) I will be back at work and adding more records as fast as I can as I want to take a break come the end of next weekend for 2 weeks (to spend time with my family and work on my personal stuff) but never fear, I may not be able to stay away that long. Thank you, Karen for the family line you submitted! Have fun folks and enjoy! 3. Hi Patsy & list, Check this link on my site, scroll down to the Historical Society part and it will give the prices and addresses. If there is any problems at all, email Lea Morris at: lea@ac.net and she will help you. I am in Cumberland County, NC and am not a member yet of the society. My money is too tight right now to become a member just yet, but am hoping at the first of the year to become a member. I do need to find out how much it costs to become a member though. Maybe Lea will see this as I am cc'ing the list in case others might need the address as well to order the books. You do not need to be one to buy the books though, and I have bought the books before, they are good. So are Lea's census books. I have copies of each of those as well. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cranford/montinfo.html I forgot to pass along the address and I am glad that you brought that to my attention, Patsy. Thanks again! Cathy ----- Original Message ----- From: <Fourguls1bouy@aol.com> To: <pastseeker@nc.rr.com> Sent: Monday, December 10, 2001 9:50 PM Subject: Re: [NCMONT] Fw: Montgomery co. 1. [NCMONT] Wiley HARRIS Tombstone Photo & other data
    2. Cathy Cranford
    3. Hi folks, Lea Morris sent in a tombstone a few weeks back and I have only now had time to work on it. Plus I was a bit nervous about posting to the list since the Badtransb had hit so many of us, so badly. Heads up while speaking of bug/worms. New one, just out, W32.Goner and it is pretty wicked. Might want to check the Norton's website for the how-to before it hits you. Has come in already to several of my friends. Now for the tombstone: Wiley HARRIS Tombstone Photo http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cranford/mont0562.html Husband of Nancy, which is already online but I had forgotten to give Lea the credit that she deserves and saw my blunder tonight when I went to make Wiley's. Her corrected page can be found at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cranford/mont0561.html I am sorry, Lea. Next time, if there is one and I am sure there will be with one of you guys, let me know asap, and I will fix. I always give credit where it is due, it is a biggie with me, and I am sad that you did not let me know that I had failed to do so. Get on me folks when I make the boo-boos. I don't mind and I need all the eyes I can get to help me make sure that the pages are up to par. Stay safe folks, both in person and in email form. I will be working on the Montgomery page a bit this evening as I will be away from the computer for several days due to dental work being done on me mouth tomorrow. If there are bugs abounding amongst us, I will be sure to learn who and warn you of it, please don't kill the messenger, if I do. Some are recommending immediate removal from a list if a person is infected, I am debating this and might do that if it appears that many have been hit, but if I do happen to unsub you, please return to the list when your system is all clear. I hate to unsub anyone and in 4 years have only unsubbed 3 people, 2 out of plain out right meanness and one for a bug that was hitting a small list hard. If you get unsubbed, please remember that I will be unable to keep up with your end of how it is going, and will not know when you are clear of infection, so it will be up to you to let me know that you can come back to us and if you need help in resubbing, just jot me off a note and I will do it for you on my end. Keep your fingers crossed that I do not have to unsub anyone, I hate it, it goes against everything that I stand for, which is freedom of speech, but in this case, it is a tad different, will be trying to protect each and everyone of you and that will be the only reason for any unsubbing that may be done. Don't take it to heart and think I am angry at you, I will not be angry at all. Ok, now I am out of here and back to work on the site. Good luck and thank you again, Lea for the recent tombstone photo! I know the other has been of some help already to one person on the list who wrote to me off the list, but of course without your name and email, he would not have known to contact you and I was of no help to him. I hope that person sees this message and will reply to you via your email on the link above.
