    1. Re: [NCMECKLE] Cemeteries

    3. Old Six Mile Cemetery-Located in Lancaster County, SC not far from the NC line. Before 1813 the NC-SC boundary where present Union County (then a part of Mecklenburg) and a bit of Mecklenburg County met with Lancaster County, SC, the boundary was a road and not a straight line. The road was sometimes called the Salisbury to Camden Road. Six Mile Creek Presbyterian Church was on the west side of the road that divided the two states. The church was moved about a mile and a half in 1835. By that time the cemetery was rather large (Worth Raye said it was two acres) but it was left behind--supposedly because a gold nugget was found when digging a grave. It was feared that people would come in and indiscriminately dig for gold, thus disturbing the graves. Over the years, erosion and vandalism destroyed most of the stones leaving only a few. Most lists that I see are the inscriptions of 12-14 stones. My list is a little longer because it was read a number of years ago by one of the Morrow family (I am descended from James McKnight Morrow and his wife Susannah Watson Morrow) and I happen to have a copy of an old reading. I hope the additional names are helpful to some of you. Louise Pettus OLD SIX MILE CEMETERY Bigger, Alexander S. 28 March 1785- __ Nov 1815, aged 30 years. Coffey, Elsy S.
