    3. According to the 1903 "History of Mecklenburg County" by D.A. Tompkins, Captain James Jack indeed made it to Philadelphia with the Mecklenburg Declaration on June 23, 1775. Considerable controversy remains as to the very existence of the document and, much less if it was delivered by Captain Jack.
