    3. What is the "Stout" Map? I live in Texas and have not yet made it to North Carolina in person, but do as much as I can from here. Maps are wonderful aids. My time frame is 1750 through 1860. Especially, I am interested in Charlotte. Will the Stout map help me? Thanks, Constance

    3. The "Stout" maps were the creation of the late Mr. Garland P. Stout and before his death he prepared a map, to scale, of all 100 North Counties. What he did, was to take a contemporary county roadmap and overlay the exact location and names of all creeks and rivers, post offices, stores, townships, churches, cemeteries, etc...all of the historic places. The Mecklenburg map was created in 1982 and is 35" X 38", has eight "thumbnail" county boundary maps with post offices and townships identified from 1800 to 1950. The map is accompanied by a 12 page index. For my purposes, the map makes it easier to locate property, churches, and cemeteries described in the pre-1850 wills and deeds. It is an excellent companion to the 1911 Spratt Map and the 1875 Beers and Battle Maps.
