    1. Re: [NCMECKLE] OOPS -- To Resend Mecklenburg County Convict Camp - PLEASE RESPOND TO ATTN OF ANN KING

    3. Joe, I'd really appreciate that. I suspect the camp my grandfather worked for was most likely the Huntersville camp since that's the only one I can think of in the Long Creek area. He farmed for a living up until sometime between 1910 and 1920, when his son, Fred, began to run the family farm and my grandfather went to work for the prison camp. He was a young man when he died, only 49 years of age, and his obituary simply states that he was "superintendent of a Mecklenburg convict camp." The obituary also stated that he lived 4 miles from the city [which city are they referring to???? Charlotte? Derita? Huntersville? Etc.?] The obituary also stated that he lived off of Salisbury Road, but that must be a clerical error. I still remember his house as clear as day and it was off of Statesville Road, not Salisbury Road. Unless, of course, in those days you went to Salisbury by way of Highway 21. I honestly can't say I remember how you go to Salisbury from Charlotte. It's just been too long. Many thanks for your help. No rush. Just in your spare time.
