Benj Thompson was mentioned in the 1796 Mecklenburg County NC, Petition (for a new county) along with other Thompsons. I also have a copy of the index from the Osborne Diary (early 1800s) where the surname Thompson also appeared. That film should be available at your local LDS Family History Library. Twelve Mile Creek runs through what is now in Union County, NC, along the northern SC border and you might find more records there.
