Hi: Does anyone on the list ahve any info. on Shem Yarbrough who was in the Mecklenburg area in 1840 and showed up on the 1850 Washington Co., Tenn. census in 1850. I believe he was also in the Mecklenburg are in 1830 and maybe even before. I am interested in knowing who his children were and also his grandchildren. Thanks! Joan
Larry, I would like to know if there is any information on the Hunsucker family? It probably won't be very much. Thank you for offering to do look ups. Joy
I was hired as the part - time librarian for the Kannapolis History Room November 2, 2001. I am on duty Monday - Friday afternoons. Volunteers fill in Saturdays and some evenings. We have two Internet computers with several databases of local interest. Most of the Family Treemaker disks have been donated to the room. We will take limited queries via email or snailmail, I won't spend more than an hour per query. Limited copies up to (15 pages) are free as is research time. Family pedigrees and GEDCOM files are welcome. Write me and let's discuss how we can help each other. Larry Hayer, Librarian Kannapolis History Room 850 Mountain Street Kannapolis, NC 28081
We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com Please excuse the cross postings, but we just published poorhouse information about a great many counties in NORTH CAROLINA. Our partial list of counties known to have poorhouses includes: Beaufort/Buncombe/Burke/Cabarrus/Caswell/Cleveland/Craven/Cumberland/Davidso n/Duplin/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Halifax/Iredell/Johnston/Lenoir/Lincol n/Mecklenburg/Montgomery/Moore/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Richmond/R ockingham/Rowan/ Rutherford/Stokes/Surry/Warren/Wayne Our list of counties for which the NC State Archives has poor relief and/or poorhouse records includes: Alexander/Ashe/Bertie/Beaufort/Buncombe/Carteret/Chatham/Cherokee/Cleveland/ Craven/Currituck/Davie/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Hyde/Iredell/Lincoln/Mon tgomery/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Pasquotank/Perquimans/Person/Polk /Rowan/Rutherford/ Sampson/Stanley/Surry/Union/Wake/Wayne/Yadkin We have provided more historical notes from the archives on the page with their holdings listed. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NORTH CAROLINA on the table of states. If you will scroll down to the section on "Local Notes", you will find the poorhouse list; and then scrolling down to "Records", you will see the archives holdings list. These entries are marked with yellow NEW arrows. (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
I am searching for info on the parents or family of Evins WATTS, b/1839 in Lancaster Co., SC. He married Lucy MURSH/MARSH, a Catawba Indian, in York Co., SC and they were in the 1880 census of Mecklenburg Co., SC. Evins had a brother James who was a few years older than he was. Sandy McSpadden.

Hi Mecklenburg List, My name is Mary Johns. I am researching the JOHNS, TIMMS, TUCKER line. Especially, I am trying to fine my husband's gramdmother. His mother is in a care home and we hoped to find her mother while she is living. She never knew her mother. Her first married name was Bernice Timms Tucker, originally from Abbeville, SC but moved to Charlotte in the early 30's. After her divorce (if there was one) the children never heard from her. There are a lot of skeletons and mystery. Any help will greatly appreciated. Thank you! Mary Johns, Sumter, SC

Hi List, I'm trying to find information on my Badger line, Joseph Lawrence Badger(he could have went by L.Badger) married Ann McMillan daughter of Cornelius McMillan on Oct. 14, 1851--would the courthouse have this marriage certificate? Also does the parents of the groom be listed? After her death in 1852, he remarried Catherine Ann Wells in 1853. Does anyone know where Teachey North Carolina is? Joseph also published a weekly newspaper called "The Hornet's Nest" from 1849 to 1851 are there any copies in the library or historic society? Does the Genealogy or historic society have a site? Thanks alot Ruby Badger Pruitt __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send your FREE holiday greetings online! http://greetings.yahoo.com
----- Original Message ----- From: Kevin & Barbara Miller To: NCANSON-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, December 29, 2001 5:27 PM Subject: Hartwell Sawyers alias Bell Looking for info on Hartwell Sawyers alias Bell, born 1779 in North Carolina, county unknown. He is first found on the Washington Co. Virginia Tax Lists in 1804 as Hartwell Bell. In 1805, he is listed as Hartwell Sawyers, alias Bell and the following year, in 1806, he is listed as just Hartwell Sawyers. His son, Leander McChesney Sawyers, born 1819, is my great-great grandfather. Hartwell Sawyers lived in Washington Co. VA and Sullivan Co. TN from at least 1804 until his death in the early 1850's. Hartwell also had sons John and William and daughters Nancy, Susan, and Catherine, all born between 1810-1829. Any help with a connection between Sawyers, Bell, and even the name Hartwell would be greatly appreciated. The Sawyers name is sometimes spelled Sayers or Sawers on records that I have researched. Thanks, Kevin Miller
I have 2 pages I copied off a site in 1998 from the Charlotte Obsever...it gave the date of birth and the date of death of tons of people. Could be gravestone epithets. I thought the site was.......... www.charlotte.com/observer/living/docs/057520.htm but it was *not found*. Does anyone know of this site? Thanks, Joy

I'm looking for information on Rachel LEWIS, sometimes spelled LAVIS, who married in Mecklenburg in 1796 John NICHOLSON Jr., son of John and brother to George, Joseph, and 5 sisters. John Sr. moved his family to Oglethorpe Co., GA, ca 1795/6, but John Jr. would seem to be on Meck tax records for a few years long. I do not find John Jr. among the several NICHOLSONs in GA. John Lewis NICHOLSON is named in his grandfather's 1817 Oglethorpe Co., GA, will probated early 1818. John Jr. was appointed along with brother-in-law David McLAUGHLIN as guardian for John Lewis Nicholson's share. Since only relatively mature grandchildren were named in the will and those young teens and below ignored, I would assume John Lewis Nicholson to be born ca 1797-1800. Perhaps John Jr. and John Lewis Nicholson did not live in GA, as David McLAUGHLIN executor and the other members of the family did, and therefore David was named co-guardian? Although my major interest is in John NICHOLSON Sr., I'm looking for any and all hints on who Rachel's parents were and possible where they/their offspring settled after Meck, so that I can try to track down the elusive John Jr. and son. I've had a couple of suggestions that they settled in TN, with offspring still there, but no proof. John Sr, Joseph and Lillias JACK NICHOLSON, George NICHOLS/NICHOLSON cabinetmaker?, and Culbert and Jannet CANDOR NICHOLSON came to Meck ca 1766/67 and bought land in the Steele Creek Presbyterian Church area, as well as lots in town....if that helps to narrow down the LEWIS search. The elder Culbert and Jannet (parents?) died 1789/90 and are buried there in Steele Creek; George and several younger (sons? nephews?) Nicholsons show up in the tax records 1800-1807; John Sr. followed Joseph and the JACKs to GA. Unfortunately we don't know how these various apparent kinsmen are connected. If anyone has NICHOLS/NICHOLSON marriages or connections, please email me. Culbert and Jannet married First Pres. in Philadelphia 1736; show up in Lebanon Co., PA, tax lists ca 1758/9, land in Bladen/Anson (Meck) records ca 1766/67. 'Culbert' has some unusual spellings; Nicholson ; is sometimes even seen as Nielson or Nickson. Any help appreciated. Anne
