The complete name of the book is "The Mecklenburg Signers and their Neighbors" - Part III - "The Lost Tribes of North Carolina". The author is Worth S. Ray. The greatest value to me is Ray's treatment of the 1790 Mecklenburg Co., NC Census. He has divided the county into 19 districts and placed those enumerated into these districts based upon deeds, wills, court records, church records, and tombstone inscriptions. Richard A. Bain
Hi, While I have had these records for over 20 years, I did not realize how much history was in this little bit of information that I hold. I copied the entire book of *Mecklenburg Signers*, I think is the name, of which there is *not*an index. Did not write down the name but it is written by S. Worth Ray. The following text will be exactly as written and that is all there is of it. It is not the whole cemetery. I hope some of you can use it as I believe that this is not on the internet. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This ancient burial ground is in Lancaster County, Soth Caroina, but there was the time, doubtless, when it was considered a part of MECKLENBURG COUNTY, in North Carolina, when the locatin of the dividing line between the two Carolinas were undertermined and in doubt. In that section of this volume dealing with deeds to lands and wills registered at Charlotte Courthouse will be found many relating to lands on Waxhaw Creek and in what was called *Waxhaws* in Mecklenburg County. For that reason, and for the further reason that the names found on the list are of great historical interest, the inscriptions below are taken from the tombstones and included in this work. It is a rare list, but like others we have presented herein, not all of the inscriptions are included, but only these, in most instances, having relation to families who it is believe, or their kin, resided in Mecklenburg County. In other words, the inscriptions copied & given below relate to the "neighbors" of the Mecklenburg Signers: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WILLIAM R. DAVIE, the Soldier, Jurist, jStatesman, born in EDINBURG, SCOTLAND in 1756; died in South Carolina in 1820. HYDER A. DAVIE ; born October 29, 1786; died June 17, 1848. ARCHIBALD DAVIE; born in Great Britain in the year 1764; died March 1, 1800; leaving three children: WILLIAM DAVIE, MARY DAVIE and JOSEPH DAVIE. (The above inscriptions are in the private inclosure, the massive iron gates, just off to one side of the cemetery, and nearer the present Church building; all overgrown with vines and surrounded by evergreens.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~JAMES WALKUP died February 1, 1798 MARGARET WALKUP, died December 22, 1793, at the age of 53 years. He married Lucy MURSH/MARSH, a Catawba Indian, in York Co., SC and they were in the 1880 census of Mecklenburg Co., SC. Evins had a brother James who was a few years older than he was. Hi Sandra, the Mecklenburg County Web Site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncmeckle has a link to Neighboring Counties-US Genweb Links. Then at the top of the next page click on York SC at the top of the page. This is also an excellent web site. After you enter Mursh surname you will get several hits and may take a little while to find the right info. One example states that Marsh/Mursh/Mush is of Pumunkey Indian origin. A Rebecca Marsha George, wife of Anthony George, d. 20 Jan 1882 (Catawba Indian Cemetery). A Robert Mursh, a full-flooded Pumundey Indian had a Catawba wife, and he was an assistant Baptist minister to John Rooker of the Flint Hill Church and missionary to the Catawbas. I did not run the Watts surname. The "Stout" maps were the creation of the late Mr. Garland P. Stout and before his death he prepared a map, to scale, of all 100 North Counties. What he did, was to take a contemporary county roadmap and overlay the exact location and names of all creeks and rivers, post offices, stores, townships, churches, cemeteries, etc...all of the historic places. The Mecklenburg map was created in 1982 and is 35" X 38", has eight "thumbnail" county boundary maps with post offices and townships identified from 1800 to 1950. The map is accompanied by a 12 page index. For my purposes, the map makes it easier to locate property, churches, and cemeteries described in the pre-1850 wills and deeds. It is an excellent companion to the 1911 Spratt Map and the 1875 Beers and Battle Maps. TO: Joan If I understand your research, you have ancestor Henry Clay "Clinton" Yarber, who married Sarah E. Fox 1859, Jefferson Co., TN; and you do not know the parents of Henry Yarber, and have not been able to establish the connection to NC yet. Try to narrow the scope of your quiries to just one ancestor with just the basic info and locations you have for him/her. I have taken several years in sorting out same name researches - You will use more time disproving than proving, but this is necessary for the process of elimination, and improves our resesarch skills. Someone has said that the woodpecker would make a good genealogist, because it uses its' head and keeps on pecking till the job gets done. Sometime genealogy does require a lot of pecking. If I find anything on Henry Clay "Clinton" Yarber I will let you know. Good Luck! Lee

Greetings, Some time back inquiries were made on the list about where to find the Mecklenburg "Stout" Map and The Mecklenburg Heritage Book. I have, with the help of list members, located the suppliers of the "Stout" maps and they are now listed as a source for "Books and Maps" on the main page at www.rootsweb.com/~ncmeckle . And, for those of you in the Charlotte area, a copy of the Mecklenburg Map will be on display as part of the Olde Mecklenburg Genealogical Society exhibit at the Carolina Room beginning January 28. As you know, a Mecklenburg Heritage Book has not been compiled. However, the Cabarrus County Genealogical Society is spearheading a project to create and publish a Heritage Book keeping with the series started some years ago and that is a valuable aid to genealogists. For those of you interested in contributing your family histories and/or information about the project should contact Sheila Weaver at sheilaw@webkorner.com . Again, for those of you in the Charlotte/Concord area a meeting of the Heritage Book committee will be held this Thursday the 24th about 6:30 at the Kannapolis Branch of the Concord Library. Contact Sheila for further details. Thank you for participating in the NCMECKLE-L list provided as a part of the Mecklenburg NCGenWeb project page. Joy, Dr. Tibor, and List, All of the following is on our main page at www.rootsweb.com/~ncmeckle . Mecklenburg County Vital Statistics since 1903 (Birth, Marriages, and Deaths) are available from the Register of Deeds Office at 700 East Stonewall Street, Suite 320, Charlotte, NC 28202. Property records from 1763 and Marriage records prior to 1913 are available from the Register of Deeds Office at 720 East Fourth Street, Charlotte, NC 28202. Copies of all Mecklenburg Vital Records are available from the North Carolina Archives at Genealogical Services, State Library of NC, 4647 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-4647. The county offices require a specific name and date before they will respond to any "look-up" requests. Obits and Census Records may be found at the Carolina Room of our Public Library. The folks there will do limited research and can be reached at www.plcmc.org . All of the above resources require fees for "look-ups" and copies. If Charlotte is not convenient to your locale, we have a number of volunteer and professional researchers that can obtain vital record copies and research information. A list of these individuals may be found on the main page at www.rootsweb.com/~ncmeckle and the list is provided as a public service and is not endorsed or recommended by the NCGenWeb Project, RootsWeb, Inc., or the NCMECKLE List Administrator. Thought that I would mention that much of the history of my aunt and uncle, Maj. Thomas and Jane J. (Morrison) Alexander, and their children, came from Mrs. Mary Louise Davidson: She apparently possessed the family Bible of the Alexanders, and no doubt, knew them well. [see Alexander Kin Vol I, pg. 140. Also, see the 4 issues of "Our Heritage," Monroe Co., NC, ENQUIRER JOURNAL on July 9, 16, 23, and 30, 1949. The source of Thomas and Jane's family was again furnished by Mrs. Mary Louise Davidson.] Thanks. Mac Alexander.

Liggett's Co.) shows Edmond Yarborough being taxed on 188 acres; Joshua Yarborough for 1 pole tax (18 + male); Reuben Yarborough 600 acres; Shem Yarborough for 200 acres; Shadrack Yarborough 200 acres. 17 Sept 1826, Shim Yarborough sold 120 acres on Richarson Creek to Beford Garris. Richarson Creek was in the SE corner of Mecklenburg Co. and was taken into Union Co., NC in 1842. I would take a look at Union Co., NC records. Shaderack Yarborough's land was also on Richarson Ck. He obtained a state land grant for his land in 1798. A Joshua Yarborough sold land on both sides of Onion Br. of Richardson Cr in 1786. This land was originally part of a state grant to Benjamin and Reuben Yarborough. Right off hand, I do not see any historical notes on the Yarborough family in Mecklenburg County. According to the 1903 "History of Mecklenburg County" by D.A. Tompkins, Captain James Jack indeed made it to Philadelphia with the Mecklenburg Declaration on June 23, 1775. Considerable controversy remains as to the very existence of the document and, much less if it was delivered by Captain Jack. The text of the alleged declaration or "resolves" may be found on the Olde Mecklenburg Genealogical Society WebPage at www.rootsweb.com/~ncomgs . ----- Original Message ----- From: Mac Alexander <maxtrax@pdq.net> To: <NCMECKLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 19, 2002 11:25 PM Subject: Re: [NCMECKLE-L] CAPT.
