A Matthias Beaver family came into Mecklenburg Co ca 1760. Is anyone researching this line? My 5Ggrandfather Matthias Beaver fought in the SC militia in the Rev War under Gen Thos Sumter. His son Matthias Beaver b 1792 married Elizabeth Blakeney and lived in Chesterfield Co, SC. I would really like to know if the Matthias Beaver in Mecklenburg was an ancestor of my Mathias Beavers! Matthias seems to be the favorite male name in the Beaver family, so this one has been hard to sort our.

Loch Norman Highland Games Distinguished Guest- BILLY KENNEDY Learn a little about your relatives... those doggedly-determined cantankerous Scots-Irish with author, Billy Kennedy. The seminar is hosted by the Catawba Valley Scottish Society on Friday April 19th at Rural Hill Farm from 3:00-4:30pm. Adults $10. He will be available for book signings at the Loch Norman Highland Games on Saturday and Sunday. Call for information about group rates. Billy Kennedy was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1943 and comes of Scots-Irish Presbyterian roots. For 30 years, he has been one of the leading journalists in Northern Ireland, covering the major stories of the Ulster troubles and as a prolific columnist on a variety of issues. For 18 years, he was a news editor with the Ulster/Belfast News Letter, Northern Ireland's leading morning newspaper and the oldest English language newspaper for 5 years, he was the lead writer and wrote about religious affairs, local government correspondent and was the literary editor. He now operates as a full-time freelance journalist, public relations consultant, author and lecturer. Billy Kennedy has a deep fascination for his forebears of that tradition who moved to America in such numbers during the 18th century. His abiding interest is in the history of the Scots-Irish settlements on the American frontier, and through his authorship, Billy Kennedy has lectured on the Scots-Irish Diaspora in America in major cities and towns in the south eastern Appalachian region and on the eastern seaboard. In the establishment of the United States, the Scots- Irish were one of the most highly influential groups, both in the drawing up and signing of the American Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, and in the Revolutionary War that followed. This group of dedicated stalwarts, whose families immigrated to America from the Irish Province of Ulster thoughout the 18th century, were resolute and uncompromising champions of the movement for American independence. Bitter expericence of religious discrimination and economic deprivation in their Scottish and Ulster homelands gave impetus to the Scots-Irish people throwing off the shackles of the old order when they moved to the American colonies and opened up the greater frontier lands. The Scots-Irish were in the vanguard of American patriot involvement on all fronts of the War, but it was on the frontier that they made most significant contributions. Quite uniquely, as a people, they rose to the awesome challenge of the American frontier - its danger, its in accessibility and its sheer enormity. Billy Kennedy has written a highly popular series of books about the inspiring story of how a highly determined and very courageous God-fearing people from the north of Ireland stamped their distinctive Presbyterian character on the various facets of American life, from they first traveled across the Atlantic in large numbers in the early 18th century. Heroism was a distinct characteristic of the Scots- Irish immigrants who settled on the American frontier during the 18th century and the raw courage shown by these dogged, determined people in very difficult circumstances helped place the United States on the high plain where it is today. Forging a civilization out of a wilderness was a real challenge for the tens of thousands of immigrants from Ulster, and how well they succeeded in molding a decent, law-abiding society. For research on his books, Billy Kennedy traveled extensively through Virginia, Tennessee and the Carolinas and met and talked with many people with direct links to the Scots-Irish settlers of 200 years ago. Information about his books will be at the seminar on Friday, April 19th at 3:00-4:30. I Emailed my Black Lines c.1750 to 1900 oldest being brothers William and John Black from No. Ireland > PA > Mecklenburg Co, NC. I will put the photos in the mail as the files were too big to send. Part 2: Can anyone tell me where I might find a list of who served in the Rev War from Rowan or Mecklenburg Co's? He died in 1779, which was just after the war was over, out of state (NC). Court records don't say were he died in all the dates it took to settle his estate.
At 05:31 PM 3/29/02 -0500, you wrote: >Is anyone researching or have any information on Vincent Young WILLIAMSON >and when he died? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Vincent Young Williamson was my great, great grandfather. Supposedly he is buried at Sharon Presbyterian Church, which is just across the street from where I now live, but I have not had time since moving here to go find his grave. He was the son of Godfrey Williamson and Elizabeth ??? who moved to Mecklenburg County NC sometime before 1790. They came here from Essex Co in tidewater VA. Vincent was married to Mary P "Polly" McCoy around May 1, 1824. One reason I want to try to find his grave stone is that I only have approximate dates: b. c.1805 & d. c.1840. I do not know her father, but she had a brother: Edwin A. McCoy, born in 1802 and died about 1852. Edwin married Kissandra Christian Williamson, a sister of Vincent Williamson. They were married December 17, 1826. Vincent and Polly had at least six children: James Godfrey, Lee, David A. (my grandfather), Ed, Susan, and John. If I can help you further, please tell me how. Sometime shortly after Easter, or at least after April 15th, I plan to seek out his grave and hope it has dates on it. Good Searching - Good Finding - Good Luck! Hi List, Is anyone researching or have any information on Vincent Young WILLIAMSON and when he died? I found the following: North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868 Bride: Mary P. McCoy Groom: Vincent Young Williamson Bond Date: 01 May 1824 County: Mecklenburg Record#: 02 272 Bondsman: Jno H. McCoy Wintess: Isaac Alexander Bond#: 000084340 I'm trying to determine the spouse of a Mrs. Williamson, age 40, listed as head of household with her children that was in the 1850 census, Mecklenburg County, Steele Creek Dist. She is still in Steele Creek Dist. in the 1860 census. She is listed Mary [T or P] WILLIAMSON. age 51, widow. Also in the household are two of her younger sons, Edwin and Pinkney. There is a Henry F. McCoy, 48, male, occupation: Gold digger. I'm not sure if this is a relative, maybe her brother?? I would very much appreciate any help. Thanks....Lynn
Dear Vicki; I have a JOHN MCCREE listed as married to RUTH ALEXANDER, the daughter of ZEBULON ALEXANDER. Ruth was born in 1756. I have 2 sources for this information: John McCree is mentioned in Zebulon ALexander's will as his son-in-law. "Zebulun Alexander wrote in his Will: .."I hereby constitute and appoint Jane Alexander, my beloved wife, John McCree, my son-in-law and Hez. Alexander to be my sole executors of this my last Will and testament..." (excerpt) Will of Zebulon Alexander written 3 mar 1784, proved Sept. 1784. Mecklenburg County, NC 1784 Will Book A, page 4 The 2nd source is a family history of the ALEXANDERs that was sent to me by another person on this list, Sarah Keesee. I'm not sure but she may have taken it from the book, Brevard Family; The descendants of Jean Brevard of France,Ireland&Maryland by Robert Stephens Hand. I say this because she did cite this book as the source of some of the info she had sent me. Sadly, I was new at this, and didn't document as specifically as I should have the source for the McKee info. I have no other info on either Ruth Alexander or John McCree. Hope this helps in your search. Nancy
Follow-up data for McWhorter family lines: A message from Joy Alexander of PA, relates there is a "tradition" that George McWhorter on Waxhaw Cr., Mecklenburg Co., NC married Elizabeth Walkup, who is suppose to be a sister to James Walkup in the Waxhaw Settlement. This McWhorter family may be from the Octorara Cr. Settlement of Chester Co., PA. NOTE: As yet, there is no known source for these traditions. Other McWhorter records from Ancestry.com provides the following: John McWhorter, son of George McWhorter and Elizabeth Walkup, was born 1760, Shenandoah Valley, VA; died 1854, Hancock Co., GA; married to Sarah Shy. Rosannah McWhorter, daughter of George McWhorter and Elizabeth Walkup, was born 22 Apr 1774, NC; died 3 May 1846; married James Denton Smith. This fits the traditional migration route down the Great Wagon Road of many settlers into Mecklenburg Co., NC: PA - VA - NC. Additional Info: In 1740, the Chester Co., PA townships along Octorara Creek were West Nottingham, East Nottingham, West Fallowfield, Sadsbury, Caln and West Nantmeal. Those townships west of the Octorara Cr. fell into Lancaster Co., PA. Lee Ramsey
