I am not allied with the process of producing the book, but I want to participate and in it and I need all the help I can get. I have submitted to a couple of other Heritage Books, and I profit from reading them, though some stories may need to be "taken with a grain of salt". "Promotion" in my view is advertising a product or event in which a profit is sought. I say - do all you can to get wide participation in the book about Mecklenburg's genealogical heritage. 1. [NCMECKLE-L] MECKLENBURG COUNTY HERITAGE BOOK ARTICLES
    2. Hi, I am Sam West of Lumberton, NC. Currently, I am trying to correspond with anyone who is interested submitting their family articles in the Old Mecklenburg County Heritage Book Project. If you are interested in having an article(s) and photo(s) on your Mecklenburg County Family/Families printed in the upcoming book for "free" please contact me. I will be happy to let you know how to do that, and also if you are interested, I can send you sample articles. You don't have to be a Rhodes Scholar to submit an article. You can write your article as elaborate as you would like, or as simple as you would like. The important thing is to get something in print. Not many of us, including myself, have the financial means to publish something on our own, but the heritage book is a way to have your family written up in a professionally printed and bound book without cost. Thanks, Sam West Lumberton, NC __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. 1. Re: [NCMECKLE-L] Another John McKamey Wilson, Jr. 1808-1881 ?
    2. Peggy, Some of the information given in the paper you quote does not agree with what I have in my files. I am a descendant of John Makemie Wilson and Mary Erwin. First, John Makemie Wilson was not a descendant of Francis Makemie, who had only two daughters. John Makemie Wilson was the son of James Wilson and Margaret McCamey (whose first husband was an Alexander). Margaret was the daughter of John McCamey who died in 1776 in Cumberland County, PA and his wife Margaret. Which brings up the second point I question. John McCamey was not the father of George McCamey (who was Andrew Jackson's uncle by marriage). I do not understand the use of ANOTHER. According to the records I have, this John McKamey Wilson, Jr., who died in Texas, is the son of Rev. John Makemie Wilson. Do you have a record of a different John McKamey Wilson, Jr.? 1. [NCMECKLE-L] Waxhaws and Prov.Presb.Church/Cemetery
    2. Beverly McElroy
    3. Hello List, My name is Beverly McElroy and my husband's 4th,3rd and 2nd greatgrandfathers lived or were born in that area known as the Waxhaws settlement in the late l700 and early l800 time frame. I am trying to locate any information I can about where some of the family attended church or where they might have been buried and thought I would ask if anyone on this list knows of someone with a list of burials for the Providence Presbyterian Church in Waxhaw,NC. I do not know that this is where our ancestors were buried or their familys;however, it is a starting point since I found on the internet where someone that probably knew our family was buried in this cemetery. I know that our 4th greatgrandfather died in l795 (John McElroy b. abt. l729 Ireland died Mecklenburg co.NC l795. Our 3rd greatgrandfather, William McElroy lived in the Waxhaws as did many of his children and he may have even been born there but we are not positive of this. He had two younger brothers ,believed to have been born in this area. The younger brothers moved on so William is the only one that we believe might be buried there as well as his father John. William b. abt. l767 died in Mecklenburg county,Waxhaws area, in l8l9. Our 2nd greatgrandfather was born there in March of l797 to William McElroy and wife Elizabeth unknown McElroy. He had one older sister and 7 younger siblings. He lived there till probably about l8l8 or there abouts and possible lived in S.C. for a time then to Ga. probably around l830 then in l848 to Arkansas where he died in l865. Other surnames that are of interest to me are: McWhorter, Davis,Crye,Belk,Stevenson, possibly Houston as well. Additional names that have family ties are Sprayberry, McCommon ,Ingram and others too numerous to mention here. Our McElroy family may have moved there about l767;however, we know that John and family were there by l77l. They came from Prince Edward county,Va. If anyone can help me or can give me the name of an organization or church or individual for me to contact, ref: the names mentioned in this email, I would appreciate it so much. Thank you so much, Sincerely, Beverly McElroy P.O.Box 268 Moriarty,New Mexico 87035 grannymc8@zianet.com

    1. [NCMECKLE-L] Another John McKamey Wilson, Jr. 1808-1881 ?
    2. WILSON, JOHN MCKAMEY, JR. (1808-1881). John McKamey (McKamie, MaKemie, McKemie) Wilson, Jr., minister and potter, was born in Mecklenberg County, North Carolina, in 1808, the son of John McKamey and Mary (Erwin) Wilson. He came from a long line of Scots-Irish Presbyterians that included Francis MaKemie, who was credited with introducing Presbyterianism to America. Wilson's father was a powerful voice in the Presbytery of North Carolina. Andrew Jackson was born in the home of his great-uncle, George McKamey, and during the American Revolution Mrs. Jackson and her boys took refuge from the British in the home of Wilson's grandparents. John's father and the young Jackson were boyhood playmates. Wilson and his brother, Alexander, graduated from Washington College in Lexington, Virginia, in 1827. John studied law and was admitted to the bar, while Alexander became a medical doctor. Both brothers entered the seminary. In 1834 Alexander became one of the first foreign missionaries to Africa, while John became pastor of his father's old church in Rocky River, North Carolina, before moving west to Texas. He married Philadelphia Herndon Fox of Virginia in 1831. They traveled west from North Carolina with a stopover in Fulton, Missouri, where Wilson established a seminary and classical institute for young women and was a circuit rider for two area churches. The Wilsons arrived in Texas in 1856 with their eleven children and nineteen slaves. Wilson became the second minister of the Seguin Presbyterian Church. He was headmaster of the female academy of Guadalupe College, and his scientific interests caused him to begin producing stoneware pottery for food preservation. Several of his scientific papers on the composition of clays were published during the 1870s. He trained his slaves to be potters as well as to read and write. Wilson, a staunch Confederate, was moderator of the Presbyterian Synod of Texas in 1862 when that body voted to dissolve its ecclesiastical connection with the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of the United States. After the Civil War Wilson sold his interest in Wilson Potteries at Capote, ten miles east of Sequin. At that time three former Wilson slaves broke away from the new owner and started their own pottery. One of them, Hiram Wilson, was credited with being the first black businessman in Texas; his activities are featured at the University of Texas Institute of Texan Cultures at San Antonio. In 1985 a historical marker was dedicated to Rev. John McKamey Wilson, who died in 1881, and Rev. Hiram Wilson near the site of their historic pottery in Guadalupe County. 1. [NCMECKLE-L] Robert Locke of Rowan Co.,NC
    2. Lee Ramsey
    3. Hi Constance, I see Robert Locke in the 1810 US Census with 1 male child under 10, himself between 24-44, 1 female child under 10, 1 female child 10-15, and female adult (wife) between 24-44. Assuming the oldest child was 15, the marriage would have taken place no later than 1795, and Robert and wife's year of birth no later than 1774-75. Also close by as head of households in 1810 are Elizabeth Locke and Richard Locke. There is a NC will dated in 1799 for Mathew Locke and family members: Eliza, James, Robert, Richard, Matthew, Moses and Francis. (The on-line data base does not provide the source or the county of record). Early marriges for Rowan Co. NC show: 1. John Locke & Margaret Locke 28 July 1779 2. Matthew Locke & Nancy Brandon 20 Jan 1784 3. James Locke & Catharine James 22 Mar 1803 4. John Locke & Ann Hanna 21 Nov 1811 Ancestry.com gene pool individual record which shows Robert Locke m. Obedience Cathey in 1797. No documentation or location!! (LDS Family Research Center may be able to help with this record). You show Robert Locke having an 1818 will, naming children but not his wife, but you did not provide the county. The only Rowan Co., records I have are from the old Anson Co., NC records before Rowan Co. was created partly out of Anson in 1753. In viewing the index from Holcomb's Anson Co.,NC Deed and Will Abstracts to 1795, I see many Cathey's listed but no Locke's. Among the Cathey's no Ann or Obedience names listed. The Cathey wills in Mecklenburg Co., NC from 1791 - 1868 show no Ann or Obedience names, nor the earlier wills from 1763-1790. A Jane (McCain) Locke is found in her father, John McCain's, will in 1835. Cindy Locke's (lockeci@aol.com) response to a quiry states I am researching the Locke family. I have a Matthew Locke b 1721 d 1801 m. 1747 to Mary Elizabeth Brandon. Their children were: James b 1747, John b 1750, George b 1752, Francis b 1754, William b 1756, Elizabeth b 1758, Margaret b 1760, Richard b 1763, Mary b 1765, Anne b 1767, Jane b 1769, Matthew b 1773, Robert b 1775. Hope this helps you out. Lee Ramsey

    3. Beryl Anthony wrote: John Cathey b.1725, son of George and Jean Cathey of Rowan and Mecklenburg Counties; m. Mary Henry, b. 1730... George B. Does anyone know who their parents were...Was their father George Henry... Josiah Henry? ------ Robert W. Ramsey ("Carolina Cradle") provides the following for the early Catheys of Rowan Co., NC: In short, James Cathey of Lancaster Co., PA had sons George, William and Andrew, and all went to Orange Co., VA by 1732 in the Beverly Patent (1745 Augusta Co., VA); there was also a son, John Cathey, still living in Ireland, and he came to VA after the death of brother, William Cathey, who left his estate to this older brother John in Ireland. This John Cathey settled in the Davidson Cr. Settlement at the mouth of the Catawba River in what became Mecklenburg Co., NC. Robert Ramsey has no references for Henry families in Rowan Co., NC prior to 1764. A George Cathey, Sr.'s will was probated in Meck. Co., NC July 1801, naming children but not his wife who must have predeceased him: dau. Elizabeth, wf. of John Carruth; dau. Jane Cathey; son George; dau. Mary Allen; son Alexander Cathey; son-in-law George Graham; son Henry Cathey; and names several grandchilden. A Mary Cathey left her will Meckl. Co., NC 1802, probated Jan 1803, naming children: dau. Jean; son Archibald Wadle; dau. Elizabeth; dau. Mary; dau. Ellinor, who had son, Arch. Barkley; grandson John Cathey; granddau. Mary Henry Cathey; granddau. Esther, dau of Archibald. A Faney Cathey (apparetnly died unmarried) left her will Meckl Co., NC 1838, probated Oct 1838 naming neice Cynthia; nephew Archibald Cathey; niece Mary Cathey, dau of Alex.; a brother, George Cathey and a sisters Mary Armstrong and Esther Hannah; and a brother John Cathy. There are many references to Cathey and Henry family members in Ferguson's "Mecklenburg County, North Carolina Will Abstracts..." and additional Cathey wills listed in Brent Holcomb's "Meckl. Co. NC Abstracts of Early Wills."
