Dear Donna; Below I've made my best guess as to what these articles were. I think you just have to sound them out, as you have don, and rely on those who may actually have heard of something that sounds like the item--and then know what it's used for. In a message dated 9/8/02 9:01:50 AM, NCMECKLE-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: << 1 citle (household article) Possibly a KETTLE? Sound it our using the hard "C". 1 Tabor (household article) possibly a TABOURET Webster's Dictionary says it's " literally, small drum, from Middle French, diminutive of tabor, tabour drum Date: 1630. meaning # 1)a cylindrical seat or stool without arms or back meaning #2) a small portable stand or cabinet." Modern day use of the word usually refers to an artist's portable table with drawers. 1 Scrw plate (could be household, could be otherwise) SCREWPLATE--the same as a switchplate--that coers an electric light switch on the wall. 1 lot Sandrays (sundries?) Hi Donna, I used Webster's Third New International Dictionary, unabridged, 3 vols --- Lee Ramsey. > 1 citle (household article) - could not find a variation of this. > 1 Tabor (household article) - a small drum with one head of soft cafeskin; dim. is taboret, a cylindrical seat or stool without arms or a back; or a small portable stand > 1 Still & warm/worm - A still consist of a retort, head, tube and condenser. The "worm" is the spiral condensing tube used in distilling. > 1 Scrw plate - "Screw plate" is a flat metal plate with one or more holes drilled, tapped, and filed wih a cutting edge for threading screws, pipes, or rods by hand. > 1 lot Sandrays (sundries?) - probably used in this context as miscellaneous articles or items. > 1 horow - probably "harrow", a farm implement for cultivating the soil, mulching, covering the seed, or removing weeds. "haro" is a variation of harrow. > 2 Small tier - could be winding or coiled cable. > 1 Frow - a variation of froe, a cleaving tool with handle at right angles to the blade for splitting cask saves and shingels from the block; or a steel wedge for splitting logs. > 1 galling pot - a "gallipot" is a small ceramic vessel with a small mouth, as used by apothecaries to hold medicines. > > > > > > > Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC, USA > http://www.geocities.com/pawcreek.geo/ > > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >
Does anyone know what these articles are, from the 1873 sale of my g-g-grandfather's estate? He was a blacksmith and a farmer, and built wagons. Many of the words are spelled phonetically and I can "sound them out." (For instance, wheal bar for wheel barrow.) The following have me stumped: 1 citle (household article) 1 Tabor (household article) 1 Still & warm/worm (what went with a still?) 1 Scrw plate (could be household, could be otherwise) 1 lot Sandrays (sundries?) 1 horow 2 Small tier (did they call wheels "tires" in 1873?) 1 Frow (not plow) 1 galling pot (gallon?) 1 frow (again) Does anyone know of a dictionary or website which might help me in the future? Now here is an interesting take on the "Acceptable Use Policy". Guess our friends in SC at "ye olde SC Rootsweb" don't have the same take on your AUP! Meantime, "hurry and jump on board" the wonderful Mecklenburg Heritage book project. Don't forget that it us open to folk who live in what used to be Mecklenburg County, NC. The Mecklenburg book committee hasn't even approached this level of abuse (see below). Perhaps you have a different "rule book" aka "Acceptable Use Policy". I say, God bless the Mecklenburg folk for their efforts to simply invite families to submit stories! http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncomchs/ C Heath ----- Original Message ----- From: "Athol K. Hello List Dad. Below is an example of abuse of AUP, wouldn't you agree? I don't recall ANY solicitation of book sales from Old Meckl. Heritage Book Committee. Please correct me if I'm wrong! C. Right on, Paul! God knows we get enough SPAM just by having an E-mail address, and we sure don't need more through our mailing lists. Disregard the flamers, and keep up the good work. TTFN... Greetings from your listowner, Did not mean to upset anyone with my reminder of last evening. However, there are four points that should be clarified and then lets get back to the intended purpose of the list...Mecklenburg genealogy discussion. First, I have a long standing (at least four years) agreement with RootsWeb that they will supply free server space for our NCGenWeb Mecklenburg page and this list without any commercial messages (spam), "pop-up" advertisements, etc. In turn, I have agreed that I will not allow anyone to use the page or the list in a similar manner for any purpose and assure that the list complies with RootsWeb AUP. Second, just to remind y'all. There are upwards of fifty genealogical and historical groups in the greater Mecklenburg area that provide related, and very worthwhile, services and publications. Many these groups charge for their work, some for profit and some not for profit. If I were to allow everyone to promote or advertise on this list, y'all would be inundated with announcements, membership drives, genealogy book promotions, and fund raising solicitations emails (otherwise known as "SPAM"). Third, among my personal activities in the Mecklenburg genealogy community includes a membership on the Mecklenburg Heritage Book project. However, I don't think that y'all expect me to compromise list rules to accommodate any of my personal interests. Finally, a couple of years ago by popular request I added an "announcement" section to the main page at www.rootsweb.com/~ncmeckle . This feature is provided to announce projects, links, family reunions, events, etc. in lieu of list spam. (The Heritage book project link at www.rootsweb.com/~ncomchs is there) Thanks for your time and cooperation. Regards, Paul Buckley, NCMECKLE Listowner
This is at <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html">http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html</A> Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) Commercial activities require permission.
