    1. Re: [NCMECKLE] MCCALL AND LEGGETT FAMILIES
    2. Doris Peirce
    3. I think this is the Leggett family I'm working on. I have ELIZABETH LEGGETT m. NATHANIEL BIBBY, 1794, and also MARGARET LEGGETT m. JAMES P. BELK abt 1795 I believe these are either sisters or first cousins; I'm told Elizabeth is definitely the daughter of MICHAEL LEGGETT, (Jr?)...am looking for the proof of connection. These families were all in Mecklenberg Co,NC, and also Lancaster Co SC. Can we work together? Doris Gary E. 1. [NCMECKLE] Smith, Rea, Lawson
    2. I am looking for a Benjamin R SMITH ca 1807 who married Nancy S REA in 1832. They had a son Samuel P SMITH born in 1835, probably in Charlotte who married Kate LAWSON in 1859. (Ch: Robert, Benjamin, Sarah, Samuel in 1870 census) (Samuel was supposed to be a bank president in Charlotte.) This was just information given to me and I have no sources. I don't know what records are available for Mecklenburg Co. I would think Samuel might be have been in the Civil War but don't know where to start. Could someone please tell me where to go from here. Any direction would be greatly appreciated. Debbie S

    3. Does anyone know anything more about Michael LEGGETT Jr. of Twelve Mile Creek who died 1781 leaving a widow named Rachel (maiden name SHELBY)? Rachel then married Thomas MCCALL and they were still administering the Leggett estate as late as 1796 because of the Leggett minor children. There were seven children, but I can only identify four: William Leggett, daughter married to Benjamin Smith, daughter married to Francis MCCALL, and daughter Rachel married to Thomas MCCRORY. Did Rachel have any additional children by her next marriage to Thomas MCCALL? Apparently some of above family migrated to Williamson Co., Tn. There were several Thomas McCalls in Mecklenburg County, but I think I know which Thomas married Rachel Leggett. However, I do not know which Francis MCCALL married the Leggett daughter. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Gary E. Young 128 S. Commerce Centreville, MD 21617

    1. Stewart Search
    2. I am searching for a Samuel Stewart, born about 1732 in Londonderry, No. Ireland. He is said to have bought land in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina in 1778, where he entered claim to 100 acres on the head waters of North Crooked Creed, which included the Coalkiln Spring, on 2/21/1778. He was granted a patent on it 3/1/1780 which means he must have been farming it. He bought in Nov. of 1784, 96 acres from William and Ruth Caldwell. He bought at a Sheriff's sale 6/18/1785, 100 acres along Caldwell's Creek. This was land the previous owners had fled and let the taxes go unpaid. By 1795 Samuel had purchased 87 more acres. He and his family disappeared from the state by 1800. The 1790 census listed them as 1-3-5. If anyone know anything about this family, I would appreciate any information. Thanks, Linda

    2. Ruth, you were not mixed up. All I know about Reuben CRAIG was that he was born in NC. He marries and then is in Anderson County, TN where the rest of our line hails from. Since CRAIG is such a common name, I was hoping that someone in NC had done their research and had a "Reuben" hanging around. Thanks sooo much, Ruth. Nina

    1. Re: [NCMECKLE] Craigs
    2. Ruth, thanks so very much. I've been working on my MORTON line forever but really need to get to work on the CRAIGs. My 82 year old mother, whom we refer to as the Queen Mum, lives with us and she's beginning to believe I don't like her family. NUTS, of course. If you ever run across a CRAIG family with a Reuben in it, that would be GREAT news. Thanks again, Ruth. Nina

    2. Ruth, I am interested in CRAIGs also. The farthest back I've been able to go is Reuben CRAIG who was born in NC May 11, 1792. He married Hulda Elizabeth SNODDERLY probably in TN, but she might have been born in NC also. I don't reserach the CRAIGS very much as I'm working on my father's side, but this is my mother's surname. Their children were born in TN (Anderson/Union county) and I will be happy to share all descendants. Thanks so much. Nina

    1. [NCMECKLE] Quick Question
    2. One quick question. I found a David MORTON in the NC 1830 census and it says he lived in Montgomery County, NC, East of Yadkin River. Info was from the Federal Population Schedule, ID#NC559388330. If I write for a copy of this, would it tell me more than what I've listed above? Thanks so much. Nina

    1. Re: [NCMECKLE] : 136 vols DAR records free to research on-line
    2. I have been searching the DAR list for the last couple of days, following is the way I get there: http://www.ancestry.com get the home page (first one that comes up), on the right hand side of the screen there is a section "Free Databases" that lists the three latest databases that are free for the next ten days. The last selection is "Other free databases" (may not be the exact title but that's the idea), select that and scroll down to the DAR list. That's the fastest method I have found. By the way I am on a Macintosh but I presume the PC version has the same screen.
