I'm interested in any info anyone can give me on a Samuel Cox who died in Meck county NC in 1848. He married a Catherine Taylor in 1832. I'm really interested in the Taylor family and there connection to Samuel Cox. One of Catherine Cox's children was named Samuel Cox Taylor from a previous marriage. But any info about Samuel would be appreciated. Thanks Randy King

Craig, Don't know about the McLeans but Ann Byrum McLean was the daughter of John Porter Byrum and Catherina L. Kerr. If you need info on this family, I can help you. "Hello Cousins!" Might anyone of you be familiar with the below family? Have located the below family in the Mecklenburg Co., NC censuses, and am hoping to be able to verify whether these families do indeed descend through the family of William R. and Martha Glenn (CRAIG) McLEAN. 1900 Mecklenburg Co., NC census, Crab Orchard TWP #7, 43-38/11-57: Robert J. McLEAN Nov 1874 25 NC Bell Jun 1873 26 NC Robert H. Nov 1897 2 NC Mary C. Mar 1899 1 NC 1920 Mecklenburg Co., NC census, 58-167/11-7: Robert J. McLEAN 45 NC Annie B. 46 NC Robert H. 22 NC Eunice C. 19 NC Clifford 17 NC Ralph C. 15 NC Marshall 12 NC Gilmer H. 10 NC Ruby B. 8 NC Hubert C. 6 NC Flyn B. 2 10/12 NC Might the above Robert J. McLEAN be the son of John Craig and Ann E. (BYRUM) McLEAN? If so, then there is a discrepancy in his reported age in the 1880 Mecklenburg Co., NC census, and as reported in the above 1900 and 1920 censuses. If this family does descend through William R. and Martha Glenn (CRAIG) McLEAN, I will then be trying to identify this family's descendants through 1930 or so, in preparation for the release of the 1930 census, as part of my on-going efforts to trace CRAIG family descendants from the mid-1700's. Will gladly share what I know of this family's ancestry, if they do indeed prove to be a descendant family of "Our CRAIG Family!" Thank you for any and all help and assistance you might lend in our family's search for "Immigrant Ancestors and their Descendants!" TTYL Craig "Always looking for Cousins!"
In response to Paul....and anyone else who might be interested The main branch public library in Charlotte has a large genealogy research room on the third floor - the Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room. The holdings of the library research room are large enough so that you can do a lot of research on Mecklenburg and surrounding counties, as well as counties from which and to which Mecklenburg residents came and went. There are also family files which contain newspaper clippings on local families as well as research that has been contributed by genealogists. You must ask a research assistant to help you to locate any files on your family, so if you don't know of the existence of the files beforehand, you might miss them. A word to help make the best use of your time - the research assistants are very knowledgeable of the local families, townships, churches, historical events, etc., so if your time is limited, stop by the front desk of the research room first to get some assistance in planning your strategy. There is a website for the research room: http://www.plcmc.lib.nc.us/branch/main/ncr/carolina.htm At the library, be sure to: Look to see if your ancestor was a member of a church that has a published history Check for your ancestors in the WPA cemetery survey cards (microfilm) and the public cemetery microfilms (Elmwood, Oaklawn, etc.) Check microfilmed copies of the local newspapers and abstracts of the oldest newspapers for obits and marriages Policies vary by state - in North Carolina, you can browse records at the County Courthouse. Most of these documents have been microfilmed, but it is far better to view the indexes and recorded documents. But be advised, I was at the Mecklenburg County courthouse last week, and the table that had been provided for viewing the heavy books is gone. Not a very genealogy-friendly environment. You can also view birth and death certificates at the county Health Department, as long as the room isn't too crowded and busy...but if there are other researchers there, you have to wait your turn, and your time is usually limited to a couple of hours when busy. The records go back to about 1905-1910. Before that, there were no birth or death certificates in North Carolina. The website of the Olde Meckenburg Genealogical Society includes additional information for researching Mecklenburg Co. families. The URL for the Olde Mecklenburg Genealogical Society is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncomgs/ To help you plan your visit, the North Carolina Archives in Raleigh has a website at: http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/archives/default.htm Donna J. Would those who reply to Mr. Hammond's request for hints on research in Mecklenburg Co., please post it to the list? It should be of interest to anyone doing or potentially doing research there. I am looking for any information regarding any HARDEMAN or HYNDS families that might have been in Mecklenburg Co. during the late 1700's or early 1800's. I am specifically looking for a Constant (Constantine) Hardeman and a George Henry Hynds. They possibly were in the same area as the NEELY or YOUREE families. If anyone has any information on births, marriages, census, deaths, or wills I would be very grateful. They eventually migrated to Cocke Co, Rutherford Co. and finally Weakley Co., Tennessee. Thanks, Bill! I'll send Marie a message and see if we can make a connection.

Hello, I, too, have an Alexander Taylor b. 1827 that m. Sarah Jane McAlister b. 1833 in Mecklenburg Co., NC July 28, 1846. There are 3 Alexander's. The one that you mentioned, mine and one more b. Richmond Co., NC to Morgan Taylor b. 1792 b. 1792 Powhatan Co., Va. and Jane Hunt Taylor also of Virginia. I have no idea who the parents are of my Alexander since he fits in 3 families. His daughter, that is my ancestor, is Martha Jane Taylor b. Aug 13, 1862 that m. James Alexander Hunsucker. Was my Alexander possibly m. before. By having him located only in 1870 Mecklenburg Co. Census he obviously moved on and came back. But where did he go and who are his parents? Cannot locate him for 1805 and 1860. The other children of Alexander and *Mattie* Martha Jane are Green W. b 1854 Nancy b. 1856 Martha Jane b. 1862 *****my line William b. 1866 Sarah b. 1869 The other families he could have been with are: John and Mildred *Milly* Taylor......Alex. b. 1827 William and Mary Ann Ragan Taylor of Ky, Alexander b. March 20, 1826 Ky. NOW, I ask you,,,,and of course, don't forget that the other family could have been Samuel *Sammie* Taylor and Amanda Waggoner. HELP Joy
Dear friends: Been awhile since I posted. I found George Homes. The name came to me thru the family as Holmes. Now, George Homes will was excecuted in l802. He had a wife Bethsia(h) no last name. He had a daughter Dorcas Ann who married a Joseph McCommon. Joseph was executor of George's will. George had a second daughter, Mary who married a Presley. I see in the late l700s a Simon Homes, Solomon Homes and Chas. Homes. In l776 I see a Joseph and Robert Homes/Holmes. Does anyone recognize George as a son or brother of someone in your family? I've been searching this a long time. Could sure use some help. Charles McCommon had a will someplace. Joseph was Charles son. Who were the other children of Charles McCommon? Who were Charles brothers, father? Rachel McAnulty was the wife of Charles McCommon. I know there are a lot of McAnultys out there. I forgot to mention that I am also looking for Bethsia(h) Homes/Holmes, wife of George. Thanks for any hint that might send me looking the right direction. Betty [email protected]
Well, my usual monthly posting -- thanks for putting up with me. I just ran across something that is of interest in that I did not actually overlook this, but thought these three were from another line. In the 1800 Mecklenburg, NC census, it lists a David MORTON, James MORTON and a William MORTON. The William MORTON might be the son of Samuel MORTON and Ann Holton Wallace, but not sure. Does anyone have info on any of these three? I'm trying to connect children to parents. Thanks so very much and peace from Pittsburgh, Nina
