There are cemeteries at both Coddle Creek ARP Church (almost in Cabarrus Co.) and Concordia Lutheran Church (just over in Rowan Co.). Do you know which one they may have attended? I live in Mooresville and will be glad to run by either church cemetery to check it out . I checked the phone book and there are no Samples living in that area today. There are Samples in Statesville (Iredell), Davidson (Mecklenburg) and Denver (Lincoln). Hope this helps. Bonita Mooresville, NC
Mooresville is just barely inside Iredell County, but information from the early years of that area can be found in Rowan County records from which it was formed in 1788. Hello, Mooresville is slightly northwest of Charlotte, NC in Mecklenburg Co. I don't know of the cemeteries, etc. Maybe someone else who responds will. Joy
Does anyone know J. Mack Sample of Mecklenburg Co.? He was descended from the Alexander family. He was born about 1833 and died after 1925. Thanks, Constance
Can anyone tell me where Mooresville is? What county and what cemeteries may be near there. I am looking for J. Mack Sample who at age 92 was living 3 miles out of Mooresville in 1925. It was near Coddle Creek and Concordia Churches. I am also looking for his wife, Eugenia Elizabeth Harris b. 1844 in Charlotte. She was apparently not living in 1925. What cemeteries might be near there. Thank you. Constance
I found a reference to a marriage for Benjamin R (could be Rush) Smith and Nancy S Rea, 7 Feb 1832. It just said Meckl. Co. but they lived in Charlotte. Where would this marriage be registered and would it give the parents names? What other resources are there for this town/area? I'm stuck on these two and would appreciate any directions. Another way to cut costs and still make thorough use the census is to purchase the microfilm reels from the National Archives and use the microfilm at your leisure on the library's microfilm readers. When you have finished, donate the film to the library and have a tax write-off. This works if you can use it as part of the expenses of writing a book. And that is a great motivator for getting down and writing the family history! Anyway, it is cheaper than the cost of traveling to the site and paying motel bills. Louise Pettus

Jim, The Charlotte Library has census indexes (just as important as census microfilms) and census microfilms for most of the east, mid-west, and southwest. As Betty said in her message, the large cities (in Pennsylvania) probably do also. Since Honeybrook is not far from Philadelphia, you should be able to find what you want there. I would try the Historical Society (I think that's the name of it) first. They have an excellent genealogical library there. Richard A. Bain [email protected]

Libraries in most larger cities have the census microfilm for all states and counties. I live in Texas and have found it in the Fort Worth Public Library as well as the National Archives. Betty
Betty, If you are looking for later Owens, there is a George W. Owens, b. 1883, d. 1965 in the cemetery at Pleasant Hill Presby in lower Steele Creek. Many folks that were from the area you are talking about are buried there. Also, go to the Meck. Co. GenWeb site and you will be directed to the Steele Creek Presby church cem. records. There are a lot of Owens buried there including your W. A. L. Owens, b. Apr 17, 1816, d. Jul 19, 1898. re the Owens-Mitchell-Porter families: My Sarah Owens born January 21, 1923, and her brother William AL Owens, born 1917, file not in front of me. Both born Steel Creek area. Sarah the mother believed to be a Porter? was head of household in 1840. The 1820 census, there was a Daniel Owens, and 1930. No will or? also no Marriage record in Mecklenburg Co. Since S.C. did not have records, is hard to trace. In 1993 and 1995, tried going thru records in S.C. to see if will there, to no avail. Sarah Owens, left her estate to her son William A L Owens, with money to purchase land for Jane Minerva Owens Glover. in 1900 when William AL passed away, the will was still open. When I was at the Courthouse, the files were not available in Charlotte, and my husband became ill and had to leave prior to getting to look at them. William AL and Jane King Owens had 13 children. In 1900 census ony I believe 7 were still living. Two or Three girls married Mitchells, about 1865 ot 1869. I also would like a map if someone can tell me where to purchase such, showing the Indian land of Steel Creek Area and York S.C. Thanks to Louise Pettus, This Owens does not tie in. I also have the info on James Glover and his son William Glover, who married Jane M. Owens. Having been ill since 1995, and four years behind time, trying to do this.
