She had military connected work with her to no avail. ---------- > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: [NCMECKLE] Obtaining Copies of Military Discharge papers > Date: Monday, November 08, 1999 8:50 PM > > Today, in reply to my Request Pertaining to Military Record, I received a > letter from National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis MO that 80% of all > Army records were destroyed in a 1973 fire - including the one I had > requested. 3. The service number is a unique number and should be sufficient for full identification of the person. You might ask for a search of any information by that number both at the service branch as well as at the burned archives center. Ask if payroll records and income tax accounts were kept at a separate location. Good Luck from a veteran who still has service life insurance. G. 2. Thanks - the letter came from National Personnel Records Center/Military Personnel Records and was specifically addressing "MEDALS" - wonder if they even searched for the "Service Record?" The form I sent to them requested his name, Social Security Number, Date of Birth and Place, Branch of Service, Dates of Service and Service Number. I requested information on medals, leaves of absense, injuries, place of service and noted that I was next of kin of a deceased veteran and his date of death/where died. Perhaps they forwarded the request to one person about the medals and that person, not being able to fulfill the request returned it to me and not for further action. Goood idea. Pat

Couple of things I remember now that I think about it: he did have a VA loan (at one time) on his home when he moved to Charlotte in 1949 and when he died he did get a Service marker put on his grave. Any ideas where I could get records of these? Pat

I know that he was in Rome for the better part of the war and did get a Purple Heart for injuries he received - he laughed a great deal about the circumstances that surrounded that honor and said that it never should have happened - he was fishing in Rome and caught his big toe with a fishing hook! So he did spill blood on foreign soil but wow what a hilarious cause! I do have his family Bible and it does list his leaves and discharge date. None of this seems to matter as the official source granting records wants a copy of his discharge papers ("both sides") knowing full well that it has been 50 years since they were issued and that their copy was destroyed in the fire. Any advice on whom I might contact in Moore County to see is such a record exists there? Pat

    3. What year was the discharge? If it was WWII and the person was from Mecklenburg County. I do know that after WWII most returning men from Mecklenburg County had their discharges copied by Mecklenburg County. I still have the wallet size that they gave me for doing this. I do not know where these files are now, but do know that a large number of the veterans had theirs copied and put on file. My files were burned in 73 in St Louis, took me more than 18 months to obtain my service medals, they had to go back and rebuild my files using other files in the system. Just had these service medals and other stuff such as buttons insignia, patches, stripes, overseas bars all from the uniform I was discharged in mounted. Made a nice display for my ggrand kids. 3. Hello Brandon, My Ropers are about 200 years earlier.....but maybe this willl help. My Joane Roper dau of Hugh Roper was born abt 1640 in Burnham, Somerset, England. She married Wm Cooke II son of Wm. Cooke and Mary Blackbourne of St. Augustine Parish, Bristol, Gloucester, England in 1665. They resided in Isle of Wight and Surry Co VA. I looked in the Albemarle Parish Register of Surry and Sussex Counties 1739-1778 and only found one Roper....Henrietta on p.94 was listed as godparent of Thomas, son of Richard Northcross and wife Jane ; b. July 13, 1757 ; c. Feb 19, 1758. The other godparents were Edward Powell and Wm. Hewitt. This is all the information I have ...other than I've read on the internet (probably at <www.gendex.com > that Joane also had at least one brother that emigrated to the Colonies. I don't recall his name. Hope this is helpful.
