Deborah, Herman Ferguson's book of will abstracts for Mecklenburg County lists William Smith whose will was dated 25 Feb. 1800 and was probated April 1808. One of his daughters was named Sarah WATSON. Others mentioned were wife Isabella; daughters Mary and Jane. Sons were John, Robert, William, and Thomas. Sons-in-laws were William and James Stewart and daughters-in-law Margaret Stephenson and Elizabeth. Number 632, p. 191, Will Book F. Death records go back to only 1913 in North Carolina, and birth might have been a year or two later. Because of the proximity to South Carolina which did not require bonds, many Mecklenburg couples were married across the border. Janie Elms Matthews ----- Original Message ----- From: Deborah L. Searching for my gg grandfather John Newton Davis. One person by that name was born 1809 in Mecklenburg to James Davis and Dolly Davis. Does anyone have information on these folks? They may be related to Charles Lucius Laudie.
Hello. Could someone please tell me if they know how far back birth records for Charlotte, NC go back? I have a Jane S. Watson, b-Oct. 13, 1784. I am trying to prove who her parents are. I know her father was James Watson, and have heard her mother was a Sarah McKee, but I can't find anywhere that proves they were married. Does anyone have information on these people? I don't know who James' parents were either. Debbie Mangen Anthony, KS [email protected]
I checked the 1850 Census in Mecklenburg and there is no Wyley Blackmon listed. There is a Sarah Blackman 46 with 8 children. I know you wanted 1860 but maybe this helps you some. Constance
My name is Chris Reeder. I was wondering if anyone could lookup Wylie Blackmon in the 1860 census in either Mecklenburg, Union or Cabarrus Co., NC. He should be 60-70 years old. Thanks in advance.... Chris Reeder Florence, SC http://creeder.taylordata.com
The only Roper I have come across is Polly Roper. I have been looking for Henry Harris from Mecklenburg. I found a Henry Harris who married a Polly Roper in 1809. Dont know if this is my Henry or not. I am stuck. Still researching Polly. Be aware that the way they wrote double esses in the early 1800s the name Rosser looks just like the name Roper. Isaac Rosser was a Revolutionary soldier who apparently lived in Mecklenburg before he moved to Lancaster County, SC and is buried at Six Mile Presbyterian churchyard not far from the present Union County, NC line. Mary Pettus was born in York County, SC ca 1900, the daughter of Capt. George Pettus and Mary Knox of the Steel Creek community, Mecklenburg County. She married William Burton and they lived in Steel Creek just north of the South Carolina line on land she inherited from her grandfather, Samuel Knox. William Burton died in early 1842. Evidently the family had attended Flint Hill Baptist Church in upper York County close to the NC line (today the church is between Pineville and Carowinds just off Hwy 51). An 1848 entry in the Flint Hill Church records shows: Take up the case of Mary Burton and finding to our satisfaction that she has joined the Methodist Church in Georgia, therefore Resolve that she is cut off from the church for covenant breaking. At this point I lost track of Mary Pettus Burton for a number of years but recently found her in Meriwether County, Georgia with her daughter, Mary Springs Burton, who married Rev. William E. Holliday, a Methodist minister and had a 5 month old son, Clark F., in the 1850 Georgia census. Another daughter, Rebecca, who had first married a Fuller of York County and was now with a second husband, Jackson Laney, of Mecklenburg, was nextdoor in the same census. Again I was stuck but just found this in The Southern Christian Advocate, Nov. 4, 1858: Rev. Wm. E. Holliday, formerly of the S. C. Conf., died in Madison Co., Miss., on the 20th Sept. 1858. Now I am searching for Marys whereabouts in Mississippi. But, back to William Burton, Marys husband. Does anyone know his parents or siblings? Was he a native of Mecklenburg County? Any information on this family would be much appreciated. I would be happy to share what I have on the families of Samuel & Mary (Taggart) Knox of Mecklenburg and the Pettuses of York Co. Looking for a new relative, D. G. MOODY. D. G. is a son of George Lewis MOODY and Susan Weaver MOODY of Berryhill, NC. Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots, Vol.4, p.Serial: 11393; Volume: 3 The above reference has GIDEON THOMPSON (SR) listed, does anyone have any information about what he did to be listed among the Rev. Patriots? He is buried in Hopewell Cemetery, his two sons James (Capt.) and Gideon (JR) both served in the Rev. war but I can not find a record of Gideon (SR) serving (he should have been too old). I do not have access to the referenced book, found the reference in the Ancestry.com data base. I would appreciate any information or suggestions about this person. Thank you in advance.
