    2. Philip Sheppard
    3. Looking for information on, and descendants of, John Todd (no dates) and Mary Berryhill (1781-1836). Marriage bond dated: 11/29/1800 in Mecklenburg County. I think that the above Mary Berryhill was the daughter of William (Lt.) buried at Steele Creek, but I cannot confirm this. Thanks in advance, Philip

    2. Hi Philip, I too am looking for this couple John Todd and Mary Berryhill. I have seen where they have a daughter named Cynthia that is married to Thomas Pricie Berryhill. Would also like information on them, if someone has this I would appreciated it. I have that Mary is the daughter of William, and think her mother is Ruth. That what I have in my files. Have lots of information about this family, would be willing to share. Just would like to know if Cynthia is the daughter of John and Mary. Thanks Debi

    3. Did you try the on-line USGS topographical maps ? I found maps for my ancestral Virginia Swamps. A handy search engine for hard to find places is the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names at http://shiva.pub.getty.edu/tgn_browser/ The results for my Swamps were expressed in Longitude and Latitude co-ordinates and indicated the maps were USGS and indicated what the feature types were (i.e. streams, creeks , etc). The maps are NOT at the Getty site. The next step is to go to the USGS site : http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html At this site you can enter the name and "feature type"......but , be careful....when I entered "Hunting Quarter Swamp" (as I had in the Getty d'base)....it came back with a 'no match'.......it had been described as a 'stream' as one of the features...so when I input that descriptor ("stream" instead of "swamp").....voila !.....my map appeared......searchable , downloadable, zoomable, movable....very dynamic. You might want to give it a try. Good luck..............Malinda Jones ----- Original Message ----- From: Deborah L. 3. I have had several responses to my question about a map listing the names of streams and creeks. Most of them have been people looking for the same information. For that reason, I am responding to the list as I feel it is a topic of interest to many of you. I found a map in the front of the book, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina Deeds and Abstracts, 1763-1779 by Brent H. Holcomb, C.A.L.S. and Elmer O. Parker. It does give a lot of the names of the steams and creeks, but the writing is very small and didn't enlarge well on a copier. It covers an area much larger than today's boundaries, including Polk, Rutherford, Cleveland, Lincoln, Gaston, Cabarrus, Union, and Mecklenburg Cos. in NC and Spartanburg, Cherokee, Laurens, Union, Chester, Lancaster and York Cos. in SC. Some of the names are spelled differently than the documents I have to compare them with. Most notably is McAlpin's Creek. I have found 5 different references to that creek all spelled differently. I will not scan this map to the net as I do not have permission, but it would be a good one for someone to add to the Mecklenburg Co. GENWEB page. And it might be a good project for someone living in Mecklenburg Co. to check this with map an old map in the deeds office to see how it matches up. I hope this has helped. Merry Christmas. 1. [NCMECKLE] ALEXANDER and HILL
    2. I am searching for information on ancestors, David ALEXANDER b ca 1770-1780 and Eunice HILL b ca 1770 - 1780. David is likely from one of the ALEXANDER lines of Mecklenburg, but I cannot find a record of this marriage. I am trying to find the name of the parents of David ALEXANER and/or Eunice HILL. I first find the David ALEXANDER line in 1830 Census of Blount Co, AL. He died there in mid 1840's, as did Eunice Hill ALEXANDER. They had the following children: Mary, John, Elijah, Nancy, Nathaniel, Elizabeth, Manoah, and Eunice. The older children show to have been born in NC and the younger ones in SC. They may also have gone to TN before coming to AL. I would like to correspond with anyone who might be searching these lines or that might have information on them. Thank you and Happy Holidays! 3. The Rev. C. C. Johnson appears in Dr. George Howe's History of the Presbyterian Church in S. C. Vol. 2., Charleston, S. C.: Walker, Evans & Cogswell, 1883. His biography which is almost all related to his church appointments, includes the following genealogical information on p. 515: "He married early in his ministry a cousin of his by whoe he had nine children, four sons and five daughters. Only one son and three daughters survived him. His wife and one daughter soon followed him to his heavenly home." Louise Pettus

    3. Constance, I checked on Cyrus Johnston will dated 20 June 1850, probated Apr 1855 court. He names his wife Mary exec. and leaves her his entire estate.."to educate their children" whom he does not name, so that is no help for you. I think I have exhausted my resources. 3. Constance, I just found a reference to this same Rev. Cyrus Johnston in the Providence Presby History book by Louise Barber Matthews. p. 116: "Cyrus Johnston was born about 1797 in the Poplar Tent section of Cabarrus Co., NC, the eldest son of fourteen children of John and Mary Crawford Johston. He prepared for college under Dr. Makamie Wilson of Rocky River and then attended Hampden Syndy College, where he was garduated first in his class in the year 1821... He was licensed in 1823 and ordained by the Presbytery of Concord in 1824. He supplied churches in York Co., SC and also taught at a large academy there. On Dec 25, 1823, he married a cousin, Mary Cook of Cabarrus Co. by whom he had nine children. Several of these children later died. .....Mr. Johnston became pastor of Providence Church in May, 1840. He left Providence at the close of the year 1845. In 1846, Mr. Johnston removed to Charlotte to become pastor of the Charlotte Church (later known as the First Presbyterian). Dr. Johnston was suddenly stricken by apoplexy on Jan 25, 1855 and died. He was fifty eight years of age at the time and had served as minister for thirty-two years. He was buried in the cemetery behind the First Presby. Church in Charlotte. His wife died June 9, 1858 at the age of fifty-five. I checked the old Settler's cem. records (which are on the following web page: http://www.charlotte.com/observer/living/docs/057520.htm ) I believe some of his children are also buried there with he and his wife. This is all I could find. Linda ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 07, 1999 8:01 AM Subject: [NCMECKLE] Rev. C.C. 3. Constance, I don't know if this is your REv. C.C. Johnston but in J. B. Alexander's History of Mecklenburg Co. NC, 1740-1900, on page on page 19: Talking about a school for women..."A suitable house was erected on the square now occupied by Mr. J. H. Carson, and the school comenced in 1836. This school was run with more or less regularity till Mr. Johnson was removed by death." I would assume that the Presbyterian Church would have been what is now First Presby. downtown, but that might not be the case. On page 253, there is also the following reference, talking about Rev. John Mck. Wilson and the serving of the Rocky River and Philadelphia Presbys...while there he started a classical school..."among those who entered the ministry from that school may be named Dr. Cyrus Johnston, at one time pastor of Providence and Sharon, and who died in Charlotte, the pastor of the First Church"... in one other place in the book, it stated that he died in 1853 in Charlotte while serving as pastor of "the" church and head of the Female Academy.
