    2. Tyvolla Rd. is the new name for what was Remount Rd. It's near Old Steel Creek Rd (which is nowhere near Steel Creek). It closer to Wilkerson Blvd. and the Municipal Swimming Pool.

    3. I am not an expert on Huntersville since I live in Pennsylvania, but I believe that prison camp is now closed. It was on Mt Holly/Huntersville Road just west of Huntersville. When I was through there last summer I noticed that it had been closed. It had been there for many years; well before WWII. 1. Re: [NCMECKLE] Mecklenburg County Convict Camp
    2. The prison camp at Huntersville was a Chain Gang Camp in the 40's, 50's and 60's. My Grand Father (Millard A. Montgomery) was a guard there until his retirement in the late 50's. At that time it went by a number and unfortunately I don't remember the number. It was also a segregated camp and only housed "Colored" Prisoners. After the 60's, I can't add anything since I had joined the Navy and have been on the West Coast since. There was another camp out on the old Remount Rd. (now Tyvolla Rd.) in Charlotte. That was Camp Green. My G-Father was also a guard there in the late 40's before transferring to Huntersville and as a young boy I would sometimes spend a weekend with him at the camp. It was also a "Colored" camp.

    3. Thanks for the info. The time period I'm looking for would be between sometime between 1910 and 1920. Do you recall how far away Tyvola Road is from Statesville Road? As I remember, Beatties Ford Road was the next road over from Statesville Road, but I don't recall where Tyvola Road is. Tyvola Road may have been too far away???? 3. Joe, I'd really appreciate that. I suspect the camp my grandfather worked for was most likely the Huntersville camp since that's the only one I can think of in the Long Creek area. He farmed for a living up until sometime between 1910 and 1920, when his son, Fred, began to run the family farm and my grandfather went to work for the prison camp. He was a young man when he died, only 49 years of age, and his obituary simply states that he was "superintendent of a Mecklenburg convict camp." The obituary also stated that he lived 4 miles from the city [which city are they referring to???? Charlotte? Derita? Huntersville? Etc.?] The obituary also stated that he lived off of Salisbury Road, but that must be a clerical error. I still remember his house as clear as day and it was off of Statesville Road, not Salisbury Road. Unless, of course, in those days you went to Salisbury by way of Highway 21. I honestly can't say I remember how you go to Salisbury from Charlotte. It's just been too long. Many thanks for your help. No rush. Just in your spare time. 2. Carole, This won't help much, but I have just a reference to a Robert Norton who married a Nancy Holley, no dates. Nancy was the daughter of William Holley, b. October 11, 1805, d. June 12, 1859. William Holley was the son of Jonathan Holley, b. 22 February 1784, died 1857 in Sampson County which is Clinton, NC. There is a picture of him in The Heritage Book of Sampson County, NC. Jonathan was born in Connecticut. This information came from a book by Norva Jernigan Hawley from Hamlet, NC. There is no more information about the Nortons in the book. A lot of the Hawleys or Holleys settled areound Morven in Mecklenburg County near Charlotte, NC. Hope I haven't confused you, but sometimes names help. Helen

    3. Harry, Allison Creek is now in York Co.SC but at that time was in Mecklenburg Co. If you look at a Map find Charlotte and take Hwy 49 south to where it crosses the Catawba River (now Lake Wylie).Follow it for a couple of miles into York Co., SC and it will cross Allison Creek which flows into Catawba (Lake Wylie). It is right on the NC/SC line. You can see where Hwy 49 curves east after crossing into SC. That is about where Allison Creek was. This is probably today's York County, SC Allison Creek. The NC-SC boundary line was not drawn west of the Catawba river until 1772. Mecklenburg Co. NC claimed the northern part of York County until that date. Louise Pettus

    3. HI Phyllis, I'd love to hear about them. Davie Co is close enough to be the same family (and I don't think there were all that many Douthitts anyway). Someone told me they had all originally been in old Rowan Co (which used to encompass a lot more territory). I look forward to hearing from you...have a nice day..........Malinda ----- Original Message ----- From: Joe Jacobs <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, January 03, 2000 4:30 AM Subject: Re: [NCMECKLE] WALLIS/KEEVER/DOUTHITT/JOHNSTON/SMITH/ > Malinda, I have some information on the Douthits, but mine are in Davie > County. 3. OK, all you Mecklenburg County history buffs out there. Here's a little trivia quiz for you. In February, 1920, at the time of his death, my grandfather, C.C. KING, was superintendent of a convict camp in Mecklenburg County. Since he lived in the Long Creek community, I assume that the prison camp was somewhere near there. Derita happened to be not too far away. Maybe around there? Also, maybe Huntersville (which according to Joe Jacobs was once known as Deweese). As I recall from the 32 years that I lived in the Charlotte/Statesville areas, there was, and may still be, a prison camp in or around Huntersville. Does anyone know the name of that camp? Was it something as simple as 'Huntersville Prison Camp'? Any other suggestion re prison camps in or around the Long Creek area? Ann King

    2. Joy, Thanks so much for checking for the NORTONS in NC. I do appreciate your noting WILLIAM ALSTON, too but the" ALSTONS and ALLSTONS of NC &SC"are all over the southern and some northern states repeating their naming patterns everywhere. Unfortunately for me, the book on Alstons has my g-g-g grandfather SAMUEL NORTON as the husband of JULIA JUSTINA ALSTON (dtr of JAMES WRIGHT ALSTON) and father of the children, but says NOTHING about SAMUEL NORTON"S parents.....it is QUITE frustrating. I KNOW he HAD them and that they were in NC or SC...AND that they were in Georgetown, SC when he was born...but can find no records on their short lives. WHEW!!! Anyhow, thanks so much for looking. You are very generous with your time. May it all come back to you, Carole In a message dated 1/2/00 11:19:56 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: << Checked my "Sketches of Western NC" by Cyrus Hunter. No Nortons listed.
