    3. Ann, I dont know if you got my previous message. I spoke with a friend who lives in Huntersville and he said the prison is no longer in use. His grandfather, a Mr. Blythe was a Captain out there. You are right, I think there was a typo in that obituary, Highway 21 goes to Statesville, and is known as Statesville Rd. What was your grandfathers name? Good luck in your search. Phyllis ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! 3. To you, who asked about the Huntersville Prison Camp. I spoke with someone who lives in Huntersville and he said, Yes, the prison is still there, but no longer used. He also said his grandfather, Mr. Blythe used to be Captain there. Does this help? PJ ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! 2. Raymond Hamilton
    3. Dear folks, Am still searching for any information on a Hugh Hamilton and family who moved from York County, PA to Cabarrus County on Coddle in 1770 where he bought 231 acres there from James Dyzart. With Hugh were wife Margaret DICKSON and sons James, b: 29 Sep 1761;John b: 1765, William b:1794 and Hugh Jr. b: unk. All sons were born in York or Lancaster County PA. He is believed to have died after being injured helping a neighbor build a house or barn and have found no record of a burial place but was probably on his property there. Son James went on and took part in the Rev. war and was captured by the English. John, my line, provided supplies and provisions to the revolutionary army and both John and James are listed in the DAR Patriots list.. I know it is a long shot but if anyone has any information on this family I would certainly appreciate their sharing it with me. If anyone is interested I will be happy to share what I have on this family with others. I reside in Mesquite, TX and can be reached at [email protected] Thanks. Ray Hamilton

    3. The McKnight in the Spratt cemetery was James McKnight the maternal grandfather of James McKnight Morrow, father of Maj. Benjamin F. Morrow mentioned in the original query. Here is a bit more about what happend to that old cemetery: Spratt Cemetery in Charlotte, NC. The Spratt Cemetry was on Spratt land some 400 yards back of the Spratt home at what is now the corner of Fourth and Caswell Rds. Tradition is that the cemetery was destroyed when Vail Ave. was opened for traffic. The stone were thrown into a gully and covered with 15 feet of dirt. When the nurses home for Merch Hospital was being built and excavating done for the basement four of these stones were found. The hospital gave the stones to the City Council. Mr. Victor Shaw was mayor and with his consent of the council, the four stones were place in a concrete base in the cemetery behind the First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. They can be found to the left on the first walk as you enter the iron gate. (compiled by Mrs. Robert McDowell) The stones found and placed in the church cemetery were: Here lies the body of Esther Johnston who deceased Oct. 22nd. 1775, aged 31 years. Here lies the body of James McKnight who deceased Oct ye 23rd 1764, aged 60 years Here lies the body of Robert McKnight who deceased Oct. ye 19, 1778 aged 60 years. In Memory of Cathrine Peel who departed this life May 24, 1778, Age: 50 years. ______________ Joy Burkholder wrote: > Donna, > Sorry no info on your Williamsons or McKnights in "Sketches of Western > ND" by Hunter...on pg 77 it talks about the oldest private burial grounds in > the country located near the Thos Spratt residence, which was located 1 1/2 mi > from Charlotte. 3. Don't know if this is any help but I have a Michael Cline born 1745 in Mecklenburg County. Probably son or Nephew of your Kline. Wife was Mary ( maiden name unknown) they had a son named Daniel. Daniel's son was James and then James named a son George in the next generation. Maybe repeating the family names? I haven't done any research on this side of my family yet and only have the direct line down from research done by my cousin. I did the other side of the family and went into greater detail on mine and will need to flesh out the Cline side as soon as I get the chance. Keep in touch if you think this is a connection and I will share as I get further information. Would appreciate same. 3. Glen, Was your grandfather Collin Campbell King? If so, I would love to talk Hipp-King family with you! There was a small branch of the State Prison on Mount Holly-Huntersville Road at Huntersville - "Mecklenburg Correctional Center " - that was open for many decades. It began as a county prison, and was taken over by the state in 1931, when the state began to use prisoners to build roads throughout the state. The prison was closed in January 1999 as the state began to consolidate prisoners into larger facilities at fewer locations. For the last several years, the prisoners were assigned the job of picking up litter along the interstate highways in and around Charlotte. Since the prison closed, the roads are a mess (one of my pet peeves.) Donna J. Here's a little trivia quiz for you. In February, 1920, at the time of his death, my grandfather, C.C. KING, was superintendent of a convict camp in Mecklenburg County. Since he lived in the Long Creek community, I assume that the prison camp was somewhere near there. Derita happened to be not too far away. Maybe around there? Also, maybe Huntersville (which according to Joe Jacobs was once known as Deweese). As I recall from the 32 years that I lived in the Charlotte/Statesville areas, there was, and may still be, a prison camp in or around Huntersville. Does anyone know the name of that camp? Was it something as simple as 'Huntersville Prison Camp'? Any other suggestion re prison camps in or around the Long Creek area? > > ______________________________

    1. [NCMECKLE] Mention of Beattie's Ford Rd
    2. Ann-I read your post about the convict's camp and you mentioned Beattie's Ford Rd. In the will(dated 1837) I have of Robt Williasmon, JR he referred to a tract of land that he "held in common" with Dr James Rudisill and wife as the Beaty Mine place or possibly Beaty Ford. He also had land he referred to as the Hamiltion tract (a short distance from Thompson's Ford) some land on Long Creek and he had a plantation in Mecklenburg know as Verdant Vale.Could we be talking about the same area?Do you know anything about the area I mentioned? I'm not familiar with the counties in NC-could you give me an idea of where this area is in relation to modern day NC? Thanks for your help. Donna I
